@pqnelson There are two ways to reduce casualties the first one is to use heavy infantry wich will eventually brake the spear wall and the second one is to skirmish the troops in the v formation(with firing missiles if possible) so you lower their morale and their numbers too and than attack with the best unit you have.
@ProProgramMeaker All tactics here can be easily applied to "5vs5 units." I only did the few units at once so I could more easily illustrate the point and do it quickly. Don't blame the video for your strategical ineptitude.
on the first tactic on the pikemen you should run away with the front unit once the back unit is in place because pikemen are slow and if they run they brake formation and if they turn you send the unit back and retreat with the other. simple. + u lose a less men and kill more
@EHEHEHEOIL I'll definitely agree with you that a play won't be stupid enough for the v formation :) But hammer and anvil and surrounding the enemy are very commonly used in multiplayer. If the enemy has a cavalry superiority, they'll use hammer and anvil. If they have just plain more troops, they'll surround yours.
@LonesomeDucky Nice video and discussion. The reason the 'V' doesn't work on players is because it is an incredibly effective DEFENSIVE maneuver. The Romans were known to have very effectively used the V in Britain to smash a massive uprising. Some estimates put50,000Romans defending against250,000rebels without a single casualty.Romans were protected by trees on three sides, and used a /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ type 'V' formation to defend the front, enabling front and side attacks against the rebel forces.
I think that it is more effective to simply place a phalanx unit in front of the gate and two on the sides.
It works very well for me.

Use serveral V formations in a row to create a wedge formation and then you are unstoppable :)

@Ayudria But they had the advantage of being able to keep that formation while moving, units in Rome: Total War don't like that idea haha
