I as an American can look to the north and see Canada is becoming simply a resource for our gas-guzzlers here in the US.

I'm Canadian and have lived abroad for a long time and have to say how silly it looks from other cultures to wear a flag on you while traveling. It looks condescending and doesn't make you stand out in a good way. Honestly, nobody confuses us with Americans. All you have to do is say you're Canadian. Many of my foreign friends have snickered behind the backs of Canadians about their flags somewhere on their clothing. However, Americans and Canadians are very much the same, and of course people confuse us daily. It's already embarrassing when Canadians wear their flag on their backpack. When I was visiting Australia and NZ multiple people said it was silly asked me why they do it. I suppose it's to ensure they aren't mistaken for being American. If it was a handful of proud Canadians that did it, sure that's fine, but it's practically mandatory for all Canadians to do it.

Not that I'm saying the Tar Sands are good, I'm saying you can't just blame one country. If the other countries stopped buying the oil, Canada would have no problem shutting down the sands because we don't actually need the oil for ourselves. The reason the Sands are still open is because other countries keep buying the oil, and the Canadian government is hesitant to shut down something that has been one of it's greatest sources of income in the history of the country.

I don't really think you can "blame Canada" for the Tar Sands, it's the US and other countries who are actually BUYING the oil, and keeping the Sands in buisness. In Canada, about a third of our energy consumption comes from renewable energy sources, like hydroelectric. That's a much higher % than many other courties. Google your country, i bet Canada would beat you in terms of clean energy comsumption. The Tar Sands are a result of the involvement of many different countries, not just Canada.
