so they are bitching cos they have everything they could possibly want and can only work 6 months a year, christ its worse than listening to rich people bitch about their problems, this is no farenheit 451.
I hate this particular story in this movie. The director completely misses Mr. Bradbury's point, and misses the subtext in the story. The addition of the political undertones is unneccessary. As an English teacher, I can't show this to my students except as a way to compare and contrast good writing with bad.
First, nothing of Bradbury's descriptions hinted at the sterility of the environment. Bradbury paints the picture of a 50s suburbia, not an Orwellian dystopia. Secondly, the kids names were important. In the book they are Peter and Wendy. A direct reference to Peter Pan, and children not wanting to group up.
The crux of the story is Bradbury asking "what if?" What if we had this technology available to us? More importantly, what if we, as parents cede our duty to raise our kids.
Reminds me of 1984 - the open field they always return to free of Big Brother - except it doesn't exist, it is Big Brother inserting the electrodes in a certain exact place they found that ensures complete memory erasure of what's really happening - they are being tortured to compliance with every irrational thing told them before their execution!
the parents are stuck in a steral enviorment, nothing goes in, nothing comes out, they're just existing, while the kids travel the whole world in the nursery.
