  • Such a beautiful interpretation of a hauntingly beautiful song... love this so much...

  • i sadly have missed this mans music, blaze foleys too.but in my defense

i have just gotten online.canada is along way from texas.

  • RIP Townes. The music lovers will forever miss you, but rejoice for the beauty you gave us!

  • Can't think of a better song to wake up to this February a.m.~The ultimate love song...

  • the tones, layers...tears falling in a still pool...thanks to all the musicians on this...

  • five people needed someone who let them down.

  • Lyle Lovett is a DIRECT DESCENDANT of the Townes Van Zandt school of song...and a damn worthy one for sure.

  • this is LYLE LOVETT singing......

  • I give this song to my true love where ever he is..like a precious jewel..lilliblu

  • this is so sweet its sorrowful.its overwhelming its..oh thank you lilliblu There are no words...

  • Here we do have a connection between to of the best sing and song writers for the last 100years.

They gives me tears in the eyes, and a feeling of being alive.

    Thanks

  • Beautiful

  • wfs, could not agree more. Lyle is in his own league.. Singer, songwriter and performer with a wonderful sense of humor... Great combo Townes (RIP) and Lyle.. Best.. Jim

  • Nobody sings it like Lyle. His work is just so awesome, and sadly, utterly unappreciated by and ignorant populace that gravitates towards Bieber and Rihanna.

  • @wfs0102 Please leave those two unmentioned when they're irrelevant. I agree this is a great version of a great song, but I wasn't exactly waiting for yet another my-musical-tastes-are-better-than-theirs sort of comment.

  • @wfs0102 I guess it takes all kinds. I've always preferred unique raw voices like Lyle, Willie, etc. Jay Farrar is another under-appreciated songwriter and singer. I think the Americana genre is probably best left rough cut.

  • the only way you could downvote this was if you were a troll. Not a troll looking to start something but just a butt ugly troll. Big nose and all

  • Townes and Lyle wouldn't come for the 3 people that disliked this video...

  • @MrAspinall06 Only one condition would be required for either of them to come, that being to slap those three around a little! RIP Townes and long may you run Lyle!

  • I had this song performed at the end of my husband's memorial service. Not sure how I had the presence of mind to make the selection, but it couldn't have been more perfect for the occasion.

  • Beautiful! Lyle Lovett brings the tenderness of his voice to Townes Van Zandts sensitive lyrics.

  • I thought I had heard them all.. but this one is great!!!

  • Thank you for posting this, horbaful.

  • Tenderness that will grab the depths of your heart. The words, the tender guitar melody and the love in this mans voice. WOW

  • @retromustard The first version of this song I ever heard is the one by Don Williams and Emmylou...

  • @sovereignrebel I want to sing this while you play.

  • @sovereignrebel Thank you for sending that version....it was sinfully beautiful. sigh

  • This is indeed one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Townes Van Zandt, may he rest in peace, was gone far too soon. I just wish he could know how much his music is loved - still.

  • This is such a beautiful version... I love it, it's so tender

  • Whenever and wherever soulful musicians congregate and pass around favorite songs you may be rest assured, eventually, one of them will play a Townes Van Zandt song throughout this century and the Good Lord willing, into the next!

  • its alright people live goes on :-) ever...tilll we are there we like do be ...:-)

  • Lyle fucked it up. Schmaltzy shit is all this is.

  • @redshaftedflicker , it's his interpretation of it. Let's hear your version....

Wow, you're an amazing nose picker

  • HI, there,,, about the ufo in Italy,,, that's what I was thinking... but I let the question open, but thanks any way...

  • This is THE love song..sez Lilliblu

  • The power of simplicity.... Pure Magic !

  • Lyle's ex, Julia Roberts, sang this song in the movie "Stepmother".

  • This is such a beautiful song, and Lyle sings it beautifully. Townes Van Zandt was one of the most amazing poets to ever draw a breath. I kind of think it's too bad he's most remembered for Ponco and Lefty. Cool song, but it doesn't quite showcase his amazing talent for speaking volumes with but one well worded line. I think he's one of the "few stars that held on to the sky."

    God bless the artists.

  • how can there be 2 people who don't likr this song ? two idiots to say the least .

  • Hmmm..it was my impression on this version that Lyle was doing the singing and Townes the instrumentals. This is not my typical genre so I don't write with authority here.

  • @stevesottl

I don't think Townes is on this track at all - Lyle recorded this for his 1998 album, Step Inside This House, and Townes died a year and a half before.

  • I always loved the Emmy Lou Harris/Don Williams version. This one stands up to it. Makes me cry just like the other one.

  • @stevesottl

It is the best because it is original madeby the author himself.

    :)

  • @ragga10booga This is not Townes's original, it is Lyle Lovett's cover.

  • Dang...

  • The best performance I've ever heard of one of my favorite songs. Wow.

  • A very beautiful rendition of an unbelievably beautiful song.

  • Julia Roberts sang this in the movie Stepmother. I wonder if she learned it from Lyle.

  • for my girls Jenna & Ella Grace, for my son Ryan, for my hailey in the future........Always Mom

  • If I needed you would you come to me, Would you come to me, and ease my pain? If you needed me I would come to you I'd swim the seas for to ease your pain In the night forlorn the morning's born And the morning shines with the lights of love You will miss sunrise if you close your eyes That would break my heart in two The lady's with me now since I showed her how To lay her lily hand in mine Loop and Lil agree she's a sight to see And a treasure for the poor to find
  • Just great

  • The only word that comes out of my mouth is, Wow.

  • One of the best versions of Van Zandt's song that I've heard...

  • great song, thank you for sharin'

  • They always take the good ones............

  • R-I-P Townes:) Man you are missed our brother.

  • This is such a perfect version-Thanks Lyle!

  • Thank you Townes and Lyle, where ever you are

  • John Townes Van Zandt wrote this tune while he was dreaming, according to he himself, in interviews on TV. I think that that is amazing and special. He said he wrote lyrics and music both while dreaming, then woke, then wrote down the song on a paper bag.

Everything he wrote has a sweet, soft touch. From articles I have read about him, his manic side did surface in his behaviour sometimes. He was a great poet and a great spirit.

  • This is one of the favorites for the songs on my playlist for my wedding. Like so many of Lyle's songs, one just needs to close their eyes and listen and if they are lucky, they will hear the words and music resonate to the depths of their soul.

  • Happy birthday Townes. Wish you were still with us.

  • Great !

  • I just love this song.

    Lyle is great

  • Lupe and Lil were parakeets...

  • I have loved this song for many years. May be we should listen to more music and make the world a better world tomorrow

  • When they will burry me,please sing this song.

  • My wife and I used this version of the song as her wedding march. I was fine and excited until the moment this song started...then got choked up. As much as I love Townes Van Zandt's songs, I prefer this version.

  • Beautifully done, but why is it listed as Lyle Lovett & Townes Van Zandt, when only Lyle is singing?

  • @MLG32570 I guess they said that bcuz it was written by Van Zandt but this is Lyle's version

  • Purchase this song from Step into this House and turn the bass all the way up. It will touch your very soul.

  • beautiful song, sung beautifully by Lyle

  • Picking my one favorite song from "Step Inside This House" by Lyle Lovett is akin to choosing an all time single favorite song from The Song Catalog of Townes Van Zandt, a pleasant dilemna, but impossible, none the less! Townes R.I.P. and Long Live Lyle Lovett! Thanks horbaful and You Tube for the upload and space!

  • If I ever get married ... My wedding song

  • This song of Townes'reminds me of my marraige.

Where has that gone? I remember Donovan 4 comfort

"1st there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is!"

I was blessed. I have been to the mountain. May the peace, love, and wisdom of Townes be with you!

  • Written in a dream, maybe the simplest and best love song ever. What we're all looking for and hardly ever find.

  • The other night I had a dream I was on stage singing this song. I had always loved it, but I honestly hadn't thought about it in a long time. I woke up, picked up my guitar and played it through like I had played it every day for years. I then went to youtube to see if I could find it. The first post I saw was him telling the story of how he wrote the song. Whoa.

  • This wonderful composition from Townes Van Zandt turns out to be 1 of the greatest songs of our time. Don't you agree?

  • @mclenptp

I couldn't agree more but I am completely 100% biased since I married Towne’s Niece, Of course we played this song at our wedding.

  • My fiancee and I will dance to this song at our wedding reception next June.

  • Am 26.and i have been searching for this song for more than 3yrs until right now i decided to use more than 3hrs for it on here on youtube.thanks for whoever posted it.Now i know the name ths lovely artist and will listen to it everymorning and never to lose it again.i heard this song when i was btw 6-8yrs with my lovely dad.thanks once again

  • I wish I had someone to dance with in the kitchen to this song Right Now!

  • I wish I had someone to dance with at all... I think this could be a great song for a wedding

  • Great colaboration! Makin an beautiful song even more beautiful!

  • This is a totally magnificent version of this great TVZ song.

  • One of my fave Lyle albums is his 'Step Inside This House' album on which he does 4 or 5 Townes covers... You can tell by the emotion he puts into these songs just how much he admired Townes Van Zandt...

  • @papasan59 AMEN AND RIGHT ON!

  • GREAT SONG! This song that Lovett is singing is sung by hie ex-wife Julia Roberts in STEPMOM.

  • For you.

  • it is amost like there ARE no other love songs

  • @nolagirlone There aren't.

  • @nolagirlone

    totally agree

  • There is just no way to listen to this song and NOT cry.

  • With love, for ever in my heart and on my mind!

  • Thanks for posting Lyle Lovett's interpretation of Towns Van Zandt's song. Those TX guys sure do sing some great music.

  • TVZ is a tough act to do covers for, but Lyle does an incredible job with Townes' songs. 5 stars - thanks for posting.
