MIDI-equipped Commodore 64s and SID emulators allow for the composition of sophisticated game-like tunes very quickly. And they don't have to cost much or anything at all.
Free VSTi and the likes of the MSSIAH can do the job for a fraction of the cost of new whizzo software.

as far as a know midi consists of a network of computers wich shares different digitized instruments, sound effects, bleeps etc,,, and can control or comuinicate with other pc,s or even other systems trough emulation.
the main idea is to make music on a economicle way, like
you can cheaply make orchestrial music, without the need of musicans, instruments a required expansive room etc,,,
could you make one more guide for super dumb newbies at this stuff? ;) list what to order and where to order....fallowing instruction and other thing one by one....i really want to make this one...but at midibox site...its pretty hard to understand if its even not ure lang + ure 100% lame at this....thanks for vid anyway :) waiting replay.
old gritty sounds?hold it right there!the SID synth is as much as any analog synth IMO!Dont forget that the foundeer of Ensoniq built the SID chip and it synths.
...he's not using the analog filters. The waveforms are digital, (i think...) and they do have a nice 8-bit...er...punch to them. Also alot of Ensoniq is digital... 6581 FTW! Good Job building the MIDIBOX, mate!
I know now!I listened carefuly to the video and Mr.Spastic said that he could only use one patch from the SID which was the one sung on the keyboard. The bass and other effects are not sid.
Ah. Awesome. Nevermind... Anyway, the SID was originally controlled via an 8bit interface in the Commodore 64, and that may give you the sort of 8bit stereotype, even though it isnt. I have built a MIDIBOX SID and now I feel embarrased that I couldn't tell it was analog...but I knew the oscillators were 'better' somehow ;). And the filter kicks ass, but you already knew that (IMO, no matter what you bassline junkies say, even the 6581 filter rocks). I also have a 6582 but haven't installed yet.
less then 100$. Maybe about 60 for me because i had the tools already and i made the most minimal setup possible. check the ucapps site link and look at the "walkthrough" for more information on what it involves and what you need. also check the avishowtech link for prices of kits.
i guess i didnt explain that, I found another C64 PS from a thrift store and it was busted, then goto80 traded me one but it was european 240v so i just gave up. not to mention i had problems with implimenting it. i just ended up using a regulated 13.5v AC/DC adapter from radio shack.
I HAVE one c62 now
=DDD and i gonna kill it =)

Destroying a C64 ! That idea makes me sick. I hope you did it with a secondary computer. 8S
Anyway that sound rocks both the SID sounds and what you achieved to do with. ;)

Nope... they are digitally controlled analog oscillators.
There is nothing 8-bit about it, because there is no sampling envolved... it does remind you of an old computer, I wonder why :D
