this game is by far the worst game in the PS line up... i really wish they wouldn't of rushed this out like they did, this could of had been a really great game.
There are a lot of great things about this game, but the music isn't one of them. It's so grating, especially the in-battle music. It could've been much better.
While I agree SEGA has fallen as of recently, back in the 16 bit era, they were with par on the competition. The whole Genesis VS Super Nintendo was all just a matter of preference.
This doesn't look at all bad, but, in honesty, is there a point in me playing it? I have played through a whole bunch of PRGs before, like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy ect.. Does Phantasy Star offer anything unique?

plus the generations idea was pretty original at the time. once you beat a chronicle of the story, you have a choice to marry between two different women. the story changes depending on who you marry. for example...
if you beat the first stage with rhys you can either marry maya or lena. the games enemies change depending on who you marry.
phantasy star series could have been as good as ff series, too bad that ps4 was the last one in the series...after that they made an online game and skipped in story based rpg. even though ps3 is the worst of all, games get better if you try harder and harder, but because of lack of money they just skipped making more out of phantasy star.
Well, one thing different from Phantasy Star as opposed to Final Fantasy is that all the Original Phantasy Stars are connected in the story and the fact that it is a Sci-Fi RPG is pretty cool too. I say try the first one and see what you think, you will need a Master System Emulator and I suggest you get a translated version of the JP Rom so you get the FM music.
Others have answered your question in the contexts of fun and story, but another reason to play a Phantasy Star game is the challenge of it: there are no items to restore your technique (magic) points and the ONLY places you can save (at least in PH3) are inns: no save points in dungeons. It makes for a more intense experience.
I know PS4 has a character that can restore Magic Points, but I regard him as broken in the first place. And to add, you actually have to monitor your HP in even in strings of random battles, because Phantasy Star games seem to be able to dwindle HP well after several battles, and boss battles require heavy attention to HP.
Yes, there are many unique things. A cat who can turn into a huge winged beast, 3 planets to travel on, they all are connected in a storyline, combonation attacks, the one that is on this video has 7 different adventures, and my favorite and the most awesome monster: Dark Falz. If I ever get a good video capturer, I plan to have footage of Phantasy Star 1, both English AND Japanese versions

Though regarded as the worst in the series, I still see it as a charming and likable game...
...it wouldn't have hurt Sega to add a run button though.
I love the music though and I've always been a fan of the first person fighting scheme.

FMG i loved this game. The game i used to get sad because of the music, but yeah, i could never figure out what to do after you escaped the dungeon
