Great tune, great players - but they're just motor-heading here. The groove is weak. There's no push-pull, just everyone playing as fast as they can. A disappointment, I'd hoped to hear some things in the live version that might have escaped the studio cut, but maybe the live acoustics sucked. The version at v=H5K7TfFftwE is a bit better, less frenetic, more interactive, although at the end they're kind of in the same motor-head no-pocket.
@blueyedboymrdeath you must not have been listening to McBride, especially when he starts prestia'ing it up at about 4:20, not to mention his solo (6:04). And I've seen (in person) both McBride and Redman play with ease at much faster tempos. Maybe these guys aren't grooving quite as hard as the Headhunters have done live (see album, "Flood"), but beyond that I don't see how anyone could complain.
I should clarify, I'm referring to parts of the solo section. Like I said, no push pull, no call-response. What's a good pocket? Check out Wekl's "Rhythm of the Soul" album, or some Eddie Harris. Makes you want to dance. THAT's a groove. Everybody playing as many notes as fast as they can, and no air in between, I don't care who they are, that's not a pocket.
@blueyedboymrdeath You call them motor heading then you mention Dave Wekl?? Dave is clean and technical as they come, but to use him as a reference of groove for Brian Blade is pre.pos.ter.ous...Dave Wekl...wow...
@inharmonicity The man can do everything, reminds me of tony wiliams in some situations, elvin in others. It's like he's a mix of all the greats. Next you'll see him killin' it with some metal band :P
yeah...I hear yuh too..Ethan...I guess I am so "old school." I don't like funk too much, but I have to admit, Joshua is a master of his horn, I just don't like what he is saying right here...I do like his playing with James Carter at Carnegie a lot. Check out the vid.
Sorry to everybody else here...but y'all sure did hop on my earlier comment pretty hard. lol!......peace.......Bobo.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Too much ANGER from his horn...he should play like his father...the beautiful creator of wonderful sounds... Dewey Redman....what's he pissed about all the time???????????
i dont think its fair to classify his playing angry. He may have had some particular emotion running that day. check out some of his other stuff like the tune wish of his self tittled, some of the most soulful (not angry) stuff ive ever heard. even if he does have some pent up anger in his horn on this recording, its just another dynamic to his style that his father never had.
bobo, although i disagree with you, i think your opinion is just as valid as anyone else, and that it's a bunch of crap how people have voted your comment down. i guess it shows that comments aren't really about a person sharing his or her honest opinion; it's about worshipping the content of the video lest you get your comment hidden.
Jonny King is actually really killin. I've heard him a bunch of times playing trio in these nonchalant venues. He really has his own sound, but his approach is so entirely contrastive to Mehldau. I don't know, he's a weird choice for Redman. But fun fact, he is a Princeton and Harvard Law graduate, Summa Cum Laude from both, and he's currently a practicing copyright lawyer. He and Mehldau are two of the most erudite people I know. It's a weird trend in Redman's choice of pianists.
Redman lokks pretty funky on this video. He is the greatest. I like this album with Brad Mehldau and Brian Blade a lot. My favourite album however is "wish".

I seriously think you like that smooth Kenny G pop jazz to be saying something like that about Joshua Redman.
LeonLeonheart5422 3 years ago
Dewey Redman used to play much freer than Joshua. You're just talking about Dewey in old age.
