Thanks man, worked like a charm and saved me a bunch of money. Just an fyi, the hatch struts have a particular left right orientation, usually the groove on the bottom attachment must face up. And the head can be adjusted to face the mount by using pliers and a little elbow grease.
@zx6rr1185 i used a blow torch last night for this and it works so much better than a lighter. just make sure to block the flame from ruining certain areas of ur trunk
After you make the cut using the saw, use a 6 point 12mm deep socket head to remove the top bolt that is so hard to get loose. It works so much easier than using the 12 point. The 12 point sockets will just strip the head of the bolt. Slide a two foot long ( or so ) half inch piece of EMT pipe ( or any other somewhat strong type of pipe ) over the handle of your socket wrench to get extra leverage on the bolt head.
I wish I noticed this video when I was trying to replace my struts. Now my car needs some body work done becuase I tore a hole in it after being so frustrated with this task.
Mine was stuck on good. After many attempts at the heating the glue off method to no avail, we eventually used a rubber mallet to tap the wrench. Quick blows with the hammer finally got the job done. Either the constant heating held up the bolts to stripping or I just got real lucky.
Nice method, read about it somewhere but i was actually able to keep the ball stud without needing to replace them.it was a pain but instead i cut through the head of the strut and removed it that way.Btw I had a quick question, what spoiler style is that?
I too had troubles getting one of the ball studs off, unfortunately waited until i stripped it out too much before cutting it off, my advice, try it once with an open end wrench, if it strips or slips, cut that sucker off and use a 6 point socket, don't create the headache i have! :)
kwok3d-nope...they are fine! Lol...its the cold...my weird Pennsylvania has hot & cold spurts...on a warm day it opens up well...on a cold day it opens...but not as quick...I found this thanks to the newcelica website...very helpful :-D
@kwok3d...amazingly it is also a "strongarm" brand hatch support, except I purchased mine from advance auto parts just under 2 weeks ago...idk...I think its because the cold...it also goes up faster & stronger when I take the 2 strings off the trunk cover from the hatch...can't complain though...it does stay open :-) lol
@Elantragt1 Well, I'm in AZ, so I'm sure it's warmer than your area :) If you order from Amazon, you should replace another pair, they have great customer service, print you label for return shipping and ship new one ahead. You never know if it's really the bad one 1 out of 99 of them.
@Elantragt1 sorry to hear that. did you get it from Amazon? It's the Strongarm brand sold by Lift Supports Depot. I got mine in July 2009 and it's still rising strong!
Replacement Product: Same as in video, from Amazon.
Time: 30 mins
Process: Use metal cutting wheel on dremel, cut off top bolt. Use lighter to heat up glue on factory bolt. Use 12mm wrench to unscrew. Use 7/16" wrench to put new strut included bolt on. Undo bottom pair of bolts with 10mm wrench. Tighten bolts onto new shock. Push top of new strut into ball head. Done.
i'm still having problems trying to remove the nut. I have the 12mm wrench, i heat the nut up but it just wants to strip. I even heated it up longer but it still won't budge, only strip (both sides). any suggestions? the gap between the ball and the washer is also too small for me to get my vice grip in.
@mafm Can you cut off the ball like I did in the beginning? Then remove it like 2:01 except you be using the ring-style wrench (the other end) to remove it. Hope it works for you...
@mafm I hope you have solved your problem by now. I stripped the nuts and ended up with the screw extractor bought from amazon. it worked, but i had to drill through the nuts.
Thanks for the video. I have a Scion TC. Each side of the strut is held in place with the clip. Your video showed me how to remove it by prying it out.
Hey thanks for this, the lighter trick worked and now I have working struts. I think I used 10mm and 12mm wrenches to remove the bolts. I heated the top bolts for about 45 seconds. No need to do it the hard way (that was the reason it took me long to replace these, I didn't want to cut anything) Thanks again, keep up the good work. You can get supports from 'Mr. Lou', he has 'parts'.
Nice vid dude! wher did you get the new ball ended bolts thou. im looking around my place, canadian tire, princess auto and no one has them.
thanks

Dang with I woulda seen this before I stripped the bolts. No wonder why the wouldn't come loose. I'll throw on a flame torch and try that.

I have a Lincoln Aviator with the infamous broken hinge on the rear glass.
I couldn't figure out how to detatch the struts to allow the glass to hang freely.
Awesome!!!

I bought new hood lifts from ebay. My hold won't hold. Is there a problem with struts.

@3200j Don't get the crappy one from ebay. Look up Amazon, there is a high rated Struts (the one that has my video comment). get that one.
