If you can measure how many newtons you have perhaps you kann try a conterbalance at set at more than 90 degress to assist it aorund again, similar to a crank shaft. Like a car the crank brings the motion back around so that the motor knows which direction it needs to continue in.

I was thinking of something similar except with three (or an odd number of) such arms, and two V gates such that there are always two (or more) arms providing power in order to get the one arm across the threshold. Does anyone know if someone has tried it that way?

Maybe you should try adding at least two more rotor arms in 120 degrees between all of them. That way you would always have 2 pulling arms while 1 is passing over sticky point.

I hate to say it but it does not look like it works to me. That is why he is stopping it with his hand then giving it a push with his finger to get it to go all the way around back to his hand. The momentum from the push is carrying it all the way around not the design of the motor. I do think that a v-gate motor will work coupled with a mechanical feature to move the stator past the sticking point.
