Why the he'll can't I ever view this on a mobile connection? I would like to be able to listen to it in my car. I also can't find a download from anywhere.
No, I think it was meant to be on the BTC deluxe set but the TV station owns the rights and they wanted too much money for them. I think there may have been something on the matador blog about it
if you read perfect sound forever, it talks about malkmus taking total control towards the end while they were recording terror twilight he refuses any input from kannberg or the others. also, pavemen was the name of kannbergs first band without malkmus. when malkmus and scott started, malkmus liked the name pavement so much he insisted they kept it for their band name.
@Sizztastic Somehow I don't think Kannberg's contributions will be missed on "Terror Twilight". His songwriting style wouldn't have fit well on that album.
Frankly I don't get these 'Malkmus is a douchebag' things. He seems like a very intelligent and funny guy who got just got burned out with Pavement.
The ending of this video, after the song ends, is the most baffling thing ever to me. Did the band members really hate each other this much at this point, to be shaking hands like they're total strangers?
I enjoyed your video, If you need help getting your video exposed i use a service at Tubeviews . Net They offer views, ratings, and comments. They helped my video get ranked on the first page
yes, but it wasn't improvised or anything. they worked it out (for the most part) beforehand, although from what i can tell it still had a pretty loose arrangement by the time they did this, the final version. there's an mp3 floating around with audio of the whole program in which you can hear them running through some practice takes, working out the lyrics and arrangement stuff. one snippet has malkmus taking lead with french lyrics.
Did Malkamus hate Spiral Stairs, seem like he was always making rude comments to him at every pavement show I saw. Hope they reuinite someday, but I think these two have bad blood.
ummm... hit the plane down? really? a great song? spiral was great in his own right but citing that as an example of said greatness really doesn't help your argument. that song almost ruins crooked crain
well i suppose it is just a fall rip off but i like it, that album is abit one dimensional and its alot different and abit rough which the majority of the album isn't
fair enough. i just feel like it really interrupts the flow of everything. people seem to like it because yeah, its supposedly their tribute to the fall but i just feel like it falls short of everything its trying to do. to each their own
very much so. the last two don't seem to get the same praise as the first two but they're excellent in their own right. wowee zowee is quite exciting on first listen actually
i agree, hit the plane down is one of the weakest tracks on crooked rain, but on the other hand it prevents the album as a whole from becoming "too catchy"
fran, don't listen to the other posters. All other bands you could say "rip" off other bands. It's called "influence". Every album from these guys is fresh and gutsy. Forget mainstream, top 40 crap. This band strictly put out it's own music, and never comformed. Follow it up with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. "Church on White" (just a S.Malkmus song, not w/ Jicks) is a particular one I think you'd like, and thier last album "Real Emotional Trash" was they best thing I've heard in years.
sorry to give the bad news but this is from Matador
For Sale: The Preston School of Industry is owned by Dutch station VPRO and they wanted an obscene amount of money for it. We jointly decided with the band that it just didnt make sense. Sorry guys.
That's right, they recorded it live for a radio gig. Those darn dirty Dutch! Just kidding of course, I'm part Dutch myself.. Oh well, at least the 2 songs from their Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast appearance are on there, last 2 songs on the 2nd disc!
Just to remind everyone, go buy Brighten the Corners: Nicene Creedence Edition next Tuesday. Although everyone who would buy it probably already has the date penciled in on every calendar they own.
I only like a few spiral stairs songs, 3 max. the others are rubbish, but the three great ones almost make up for it, like i can almost forgive him for western homes lol.
Quite a few actually... From the albums and unless I'm mistaken : Two States (w/ SM), Hit The Plane Down, Kennel District, Western Homes, Date With Ikea, Passat Dream. B-sides include the great Mussle Rock and Coolin' By Sound. But this one is the best of all to me.
probably not until next year, can't wait. although since I started collecting pavement vinyl, I probably already have most of the songs that will be on there. This song is tight, it was good enough for Spiral to want to name his band after it.
oh my gosh. they seem like they don't care and it makes me care and did you see how the two lead singer guys barely slapped hands at the end providing insight ito the band's eventual demise? oh my...
That's because it was a Spiral song, and SM made it quite clear near the end of Pavement that he consider's Spiral's songs to be vastly inferior to his (which is mostly true, but it doesn't justify being a dick).
yea, but having a few spiral songs on each album was great and what made pavement pavment, i.e. Kennel District, Date with IKEA, Coolin by Sound, Painted Soldiers, ect..
Oh yeah, I totally agree, I've grown to love Spiral's song's, and while on the one hand I feel that his songs aren't as effortlessly inventive as SM's, on the other hand, this just as often results in a song that is at once more unassuming and less laborious than a typical SM song, as it does ending up being underwhelming. He knows he is not quite the auteur that his counterpart is, and on the occasions where he accepts this and doesn't try to outdo him, it's beautiful music.
That being said, "Hit the Plane Down" is a mess. But there's all those gems you mentioned, plus don't forget about "Passat Song". another of my favorites.
right, Passat Dream. Thanks for correcting me. I just remembered another one too: Mussel Rock (Is a Horse in Transition), I think it was on the "Father to a Sister.." EP and on the Wowee Zowee reish. Peace
I've read in several places that during one of their last tours, Malk would act totally disinterested whenever they played one of Scott's songs (well, more disinterested than usual), standing almost offstage, and apparently he also had some harsh words with Spiral on several occasions.
I think it was more just SM being tired of Pavement and touring and all that. Now that they've had a nice long break they can friggin get back together for at least a reunion tour so I can see them live at least once before I die, and maybe even (every finger and toe crossed) another album.... For now, I have to get down to the States to see the Jicks ASAP
I've seen the Jicks three times in the UK - they are top and for my money a bit tighter than Pavement live. Top bands both of them. The last Jicks album left something to be desired. Hopefully the next one will make up for it. G
I totally missed a chance to go see them in Vancouver back in May, had the hotel and tix all lined up and then had to cancel everything 2 days before because of work. Now that I'm done with my internship (and negotiated a cool 66% raise :P), maybe I can take the time to jet down to Portland or somewhere for a show
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! They were just in my fucking hometown on Oct. 24 and I had no idea! I was too busy getting ready for my big licensing exam! SHIT! FUUUUUCK!
i agree that spiral's songs in pavement were mostly inferior, however i love the songs & sound on both of his "solo" records (PSOI). i think he really notched it up a level there.
I totally agree, although I think the consensus is that Monsoon wasn't quite as good as All This Sounds Gas.
Both SM and Spiral seem to have benefited from being out of each other's faces for a while, most recently evidenced by the triumph that is Real Emotional Trash. Of course it's pretty hard to make a bad record when you've got Janet Weiss backing you up.
While I agree with you that SM has more depth and is probably more talented, SS had some great songs - TWO STATES, KENNEL DISTRICT, DATE W/IKEA, WINNER OF THE.., COOLIN BY SOUND, MUSSLE ROCK, PAINTED SOLIDERS, PASSAT DREAM. Another words, SS gave great balance to the band. Come back Pavement!!!
don't get me wrong, personally i actually prefer Spiral to SM, who seems a bit of a smartass at times. spiral seems more down-to-earth and humble, but i could be wrong. whatever.
Oh man soooo good. They really should've recorded it though, would've been an easy favorite! I guess not recording one of their best songs is something Pavement would do though
Why? They Dutch smell soooooo good. Like really, have you ever smelled one? GLORIOUS! Let me tell you sir! But honestly, let's increase the peace, sir. Do it for Pavement
the mp3 is circulating, not great quality though. the first half of the song is on the pavement dvd, and it sounds great, but unfortunately the didn't include the whole tune. check the link in the info for my blog post about pavement.
