  • to larne hhhmmmmmmm clearly you have never been to larne

  • I never knew Johnny Cash wrote this song. It's one of my favorites.

  • Johnny Cash what a great song. You definitely had that great Irish blood. You are missed!

  • This song was my dads favourite no matter where we were he would sing it loud and even have it on full blast in the car!

  • My God! Julie and I made love to this song in the summer of 1963. It was the most heavenly moment I ever rememer from my youth. I want to just break down and shed 40 shades of tears over this memory!

  • @jarsonist Johnny Cash was cool anywhere...Point Blank

  • Oh my gosh! This one is so awesome by him!!

  • one of the most beautiful and inspiring songs i ever heard

  • ireland is as much heaven as I dream of.

  • "... with a brezze as sweet as shalimar and there's fourty shades of green."

... oh yeah, I'm feelin' that.

  • In Ireland Johnny Cash was always cool.

  • absolutely fantastic

  • I can remember back in the 80's I was on a bus trip, and gave the driver a tape of Johnny at Folsom Prison.I was heckled and boo'd. People wanted to hear bands like Poison and whatever else was popular at that time. Then in the mid 90's Cash teamed up with American Records, and now all the sudden the people who heckled him, now love Johnny Cash and say they are life long fans and talk about what an influence he is... well I am one of the few who can say I was CASH when Cash wasn't cool! A true fan

  • @KLUNKET I know the feeling when I was in elementry school was not cool back in 1989 when I was 5 then he still wasn't cool because Billy Cyrus. The funny thing is Billy Raye Cyrus was a fan of Johnny's and he encourage Billy to help him be a singer.

  • Johnny does it great, no doubt, but his daughter's version is hauntingly beautiful. She sings it at a tribute concert for Johnny Cash, and to me it seems like she is singing about her father and June.

  • @leslieannemorrell I think it is more that Rosanne's version is hauntingly beautiful and it is ALMOST as good as Johnny's versions.

  • I saw the actual place this song was inspired by with my own two eyes :)

  • I am a huge JR Cash fan and so is one of my best friends. I've known this song for more years than I care to remember, always thought it was composed by an Irish person........what a great thrill it was to me to find out that Johnnie Cash was the composer etc.......Sure, he didn't pronounce Donaghadee correctly but who cares about that. Go JR and my mate, JR the second.

  • My Dad could sing this all the way through all the verses perfect. He loved Johny Cash.

  • Always loved and always will love you,

    Johnny....Love Marie.

  • can't remember when I first heard this, loved it as a youngster, feelings haven't changed. Cash.>Legend. Simple.

  • ilove johnny cash and ilove irish folk, this is the best! i wonder what he thought of the clancy brothers.

  • One of his best, brilliant song

  • grand song !

  • Great song! Cash was a one of the best writers ever....

  • Johnny will always be in Heaven. He was a great Christian.

  • @Katelynabc one with many flaws and darkspots in his life but still he came through.

  • no one sang this song like Johnny Cash

  • No one interprets a song like the one who wrote it...he's sheer brilliance here.

  • I remember listening to this as a child & I am 63. So it was recorded some years ago.

  • this song came to mind as i was landing at shannon on my very first trip to eire in 1964

  • is there anybody from ireland writing any of this stuff ?

  • I don't know if anyone else noticed, but in another video he claims to have wrote this in 1959, in this one he again claims to have written it, but the year he said this time was 1261, look for the other video and see for yourself, I somewhat as much as I hate to say this doubt johnny wrote this, just by the way he stress about how He worte it in first 1959, and here some years in between he claims it was 1961, now he is clean here yes? yes, then why can't he remember the year hum,it made me sad

  • I dont think Johnny Cash wrote this song in 1261 :)

  • who cares? the guy is dead, and he sings it beautifully... are we going to resurrect him to make sure he did not lie?????

  • Don't be sad. Um, maybe you need a couple of years off that island.

  • maybe I could use that, who are you? I have lived off the island for many years, what part of the US do you live in?

  • A tear.

  • Tears are a good thing, now you're sure you're human! = )

  • i can under stand y he like them pills i just had a fue and i am getting well into jonney again lovely tunes

  • I had a record of this song sung by an irish lady called Maisie Macdonald in 1963. I seem to be the only one who has heard of her. Unless any one else has any info on this lady.

  • my father told me johnny cash wrote this song while he was on a plane flying over ireland. it sounds about right coz when you would look out the window you would see the forty shades of green. what a legend cash was and always will be. r.i.p

  • he says on his great lost performance cd he was driving through ireleand and he put words together

  • Is it true he had never ben in ireland when he wrote the song?

  • who said the best recording is from daniel odonnel! get a life son. johnny's version beats them all!

  • Try buying a ticket for one of his shows Sold out in hours. Some disaster.

PS For some reason Irish folk do not like Daniel as I experienced on a recent trip to Dublin, Still you cannot please everyone.

  • Great song Written by the ledgend Johnny Cash but the best recording is by Daniel O'Donnel, buy the DVD and you will see the Forty Shades of Green in Ireland plus the great voice of Daniel

  • Wee Daniel, give me a break - he's a disaster.

  • great song

  • Absolutely! The melody and lyics make me cry each and every time, especially because it's coming from an American, and especially because it's coming from Jonny Cash. Pure pure raw natural talent. No crazy singing like American idol, yet a more emotional expirence because it's more real. RIP
