i guess i'm growing up in the wrong century:) smoking seemed to be so accepted back then......not so now....but i stll luv my ciggs.....so i say smoke on:)
So? Tobacco companies sponsored many films. The first filmed advertisement made in the silent years showed a judge a priest a mother and another authority figure lighting up. Filmed smoking was and is a tactic to influence the audience that its signifies.
Cigarettes were used as a prop in those days...notice that most of them actually never smoked and just push out the smoke, not inhale it. There is a scene where Hedy Lamarr was shown exhaling a puff that took so long to end..it was a scene from "Ecstasy", as she was staring out the window.

No one smoked a cigarette like Bette Davis did, Im not a smoker, but watching her movies makes me want to smoke, she makes it look so glamourous, if only they didnt kill you. <3
Wow, get a life I wasn't even being rude. I wouldn't be surprise if you smoked weed. And she did not. Just because a video was released doesn't make it true. And you call three simple words an arguement? And I saw the video, it's just a cigarette. Most of the comments on there agree she's not smoking pot. So stop wishin', hun. Cuz it ain't happenin'. And don't waste your time replying. I won't read it or answer it.
Sorry I had to write trashy sthings on your video. I was just really upset at his rude comment. If you want you can delete mine. I just had to stand up for Marilyn :)
oh so you were there, had a puff too so you knew it was weeds? haha
ok, i'll stop the argument here. i'm not even a Marilyn fan, but we don't know about the truth, we were not there. so don't talk about it as if we did.
The guy who made the video said it was weed, ofcourse he wants to get a good price for his video about ''Monroe smoking pot!'' but still.. It also doesn't look like a joint..
Love Anna13-The one you call Gene Tierney looks like Joan Bennett to me??then Greta &,Ginger Rodgers. After Hedy LaMarr- Greta,& Mae West . At 1:31 it looks to me to be Tallulah Bankhead, and 2:02-Clara Bow??
It shows how from the start Hollywood has been a major influence from clothing styles, habits, etc.-though some will argue that Hollywood just "reflects" what is going on.....
Bette Davis was the champion smoker. You couldn't recognize her without her cigarette. In fact, she is on a U.S. postage stamp holding a cigarette. Great video - most interesting.
Que Dios te escuche, m'ija. Que divinas se veen. Nasty people make it look like a nasty habit! They're photoshopping these images, making Las Diosas, The Goddesses, look like they're sucking and blowing thin air!
WOW I wish smoking was not deadly! It's funny how it looked so classy back then and now it looks cheap! I think if we hadn't discovered the link to cancer we would all be puffing away! Myself anyway! Bette Davis makes me wanna light up every time I see her!
@je3rowe so true, however... I think very few people can still pull sexy and elegant while smoking, myself included lol
I quit because I was so vain, and started to notice a few lines ( I only smoked for about 4 years but at my heaviest I smoked a pack-a-day)
but I loved smoking and want to so badly when I see bette davis too haha madonna, marlene dietrich and marilyn looked so gorgeous too, they have the same effect on me as bette.
I almost started to cry because I saw all of my girls (Dietrich, Hayworth, Davis, Garbo) and no Tallu! And then I saw Tallu smoking in the mirror and felt happy again. LOL!
It was considered glamorous to smoke in that time and many movie stars did it. Back then they did not know that smoking produced cancer and was fatal. There was no "Surgeon General's Warnings" and knowledge that smoking was bad for you until the 80's.
You mean the 60's, right? The Surgeon General's office released the first report on the dangers of smoking in 1964, although there had been studies and reports as early as the 1940's.
Yes, smoking is dangerous. That said, it's a legal product and if second-hand smoke is bad, there should now be "smoking clubs" where people are allowed to smoke, if they choose.
bette, greta, joan- all looked fantastic smoking, but for me nobody beats marlene. she had smoking down to an art. what would classic films be without the cigarette! fantastic vid, one of my favs!
Of course there are no little debby eating fatties smoking here. Of course it looks glamorous. This women could be shoveling manure and it would look glamorous.

That is a very nice and lovable smoker video. Bette Davis and Marlene were really "strong" smokers. The others here also smoked at that time. It was "zeitgeist" and a bit emancipation till the 60s/70s. Some stopped or smoked less later. But evident is that Bette and Marlene became very old !
Actually, the real world famous lady smoker was not in the video. That title without a doubt surely should go to Tallulah Bankhead (At an average daily consumption of 150 cigerettes, she leaves the competition well behind). Unfortunately, the habit did end up killing her.
Yes she was. At 1:33. But best smoker doesn't mean to address to who smokes the most, but who brings smoking to an art. In that sense, Marlene reigns. :)
I never knew that you guys meant best smoker. i just thought you meant world famous smoker as in who was notoriously known for smoking and I thought it was definitely Tallulah, but point taken. I must say that I had watched the video a couple of times and totally missed her at 1.33, thanx for pointing it out to me. :-)

Smoking was sexy in this era. I always love it when those gals lit it up. Now that's style. Smoking on screen these days adds nothing to the movie.

Skanky. Smoking just a director's device to make them look like outlaws or hos. Smoking women have poor tase and taste poorly.
