a pro editor is still a pro editor if likes premier they can use it if they like it. just because one has more features in a editor doesn't mean that person using it is a better editor than the guy using premier. adobe suite is a good deal if you buy the student edition its like half price for the master collection, which has everything you will ever need for mid range media work. some people I know are very good at premier, they make better videos than some that are final cut professionals.
MS will probably put off a good OS for another 30 years by annexing developers into platform lock in, making sure they are the only ones that keep that disease of an OS alive while being shouted at by an ugly, inbred, bald heeb with arm pits that sweat so much, that they are a marvel to behold.

Tweaked vs tweaked OS's, OS X doesn't stand a chance against XP / XP x64 edition, especially if you've used nlite to remove unnecessary services from Windows completely.

Upgradability, customisation, overclocking. All of which are near non existant on a mac. Not as if you can go out and pick what motherboard you want to use on a mac now is it? Or customise your cooling system?
1.You can customize and upgrade Macbook/Macbook Pros (HDD, RAM) iMacs (HDD, RAM) and the Mac Pro (HDD, RAM, .GPU)
2.You don't NEED to upgrade so much often with a Mac, because OS X isn't so unstable and doesn't get as slow as hell like Windows does. You buy a Mac Pro, you keep it for 5 years. 5 years of wonderful usage, without stupid driver errors, BSODs, infections and other stupid Windows problems.
Most of the stuff you can upgrade in macs (especially imacs) you have to have apple do it and then get raped up the ass with their over the top prices, especially for ram and hard drives.
Upgrading for pc's has fuck all to do with anything being slow, its more the fact that gamers like to upgrade to the latest and greatest, they like eye candy and tons of anti aliasing so when newer games come out that push older hardware they upgrade for that reason.
What? You don't need to upgrade anything except for the CPU and GPU from Apple, the HDD and RAM can be upgraded by buying from other companies.

I don't consider someone who uses his/her computer just for games a PC user. It's a gamer. You're not really using a computer if you're just gaming. Macs are for work, in which they're superior to PCs.
Stability is in the ey of the beholder, many people have no problems using programs like aavid which is why they continue to be used.
Some programs may be on mac but not windows but their windows based equivilants are usually just as good. Adobe premiere and after effects can do just about anything final cut can for instance.
But many more people are switching to Macs because they're more stable. An interview to the South Park makers:

Premiere and After Effects are very good but really, they're not as powerful as Final Cut Studio.
I'm talking about 2003/4, and I can say that the situation is not different nowadays.
I've tried Premiere and it's not only less intuitive but also less powerful than Final Cut Pro+Compressor+Color+Sound Track Pro. Also After Effects is beaten by FCP + Motion + Live Type etc.
It's not identical, in fact, when using them it's quite different.
I'm not saying that it hasn't improved, I'm saying that the situation is still basically the same: Programs running under OS X are much more stable and efficient than they are when running under Windows.
I dunno if theres any truth to that when compared to core 2 cpu's. ive seen some benchmarks comparing athlon 64 and pentium 4 and the g5 came out on top. I seen one by techreport where the pentium 3 bested a g4 in fp ops.

instruction set != architecture
Current x86 CPU's have a really good, efficient architecture.
Intel's Netburst architecture was pretty crap in terms of efficiency though, and the PowerPC 5 CPU's could rightly be considered superior.
You'll be responsible for the replaced parts obviously, but if you have a problem related to the Apple hardware, you're covered by the warranty, whether you modified the iMac or not.

As for upgrading a mac pro even thats limited, if you want a gpu upgrade you have to wait for apple to first support it then you can go and buy it, and thats normally 8 months + from when the pc equivilant was released.
Can you go out and buy a bluray drive right now and have it work in osx? Nope. Again you've to wait for apple to support it and thats seems to come down to when herr jobs dictates that he wants it supported.
And on a final note you don't NEED to upgrade as much with a pc either. Upgrades really only come into the equation when someones a gamer or doing some video editing\photoshop work.

I've honestly not has issues with windows since windows 98. The "experience" I'm talking about is one where I've honestly not had virii or any major system hick-ups.
With proper upkeep windows machines are fine, given you have the time/resources to do as such.
They're certainly not the right choice for everyone but they work as they should almost all of the time.
My work machine is a mac and it does what it needs to. At home, when I don't use my free time to play games, I'm using arch linux.

As for OSX, the maintenance it quite simple. Launch Disk Utility and repair permission. Not all Mac users know this sure. But they will find out without a penny of cost by attending free classes all over the country at Apple Stores or by visiting Apple. Don't compare OSX to Winblows. It is a crime!
You can find out how to do maintenance on a pc by simple going to Google and executing a search. Not everyone lives near an apple store, either. It just takes a little bit of internet searching for either so there is no reason for anyone to go to a store for basic instructions unless they have zero reading comprehension.
Also, astronomical costs associated with virii? Avast! is free and probably one of the best anti-virus programs on the market.

Unfortunately if I upgraded right now from my 8600M, 6 GB, 2.66 GHz C2D Hackintosh I'd actually end up with a slower machine with less RAM! Arghh, come on Apple, why make it so hard for me to get rid of the last PC in the house???
To be honest I was a bit dissapointed. The only real change is the video card, and actually the GT130 is slower than the old GeForce 8800 card. So unless you opt for the 4850 there isn't really much that's been 'upgraded' other than the memory. Some benchmarks even have the new iMacs running slower than the old ones if you compare equal clock speeds.
I was hoping for i7 so I'd have an excuse to upgrade from my 2 year old Hackintosh.

a pro editor is still a pro editor if likes premier they can use it if they like it. just because one has more features in a editor doesn't mean that person using it is a better editor than the guy using premier. adobe suite is a good deal if you buy the student edition its like half price for the master collection, which has everything you will ever need for mid range media work. some people I know are very good at premier, they make better videos than some that are final cut professionals.

1.You can customize and upgrade Macbook/Macbook Pros (HDD, RAM) iMacs (HDD, RAM) and the Mac Pro (HDD, RAM, .GPU)
2.You don't NEED to upgrade so much often with a Mac, because OS X isn't so unstable and doesn't get as slow as hell like Windows does. You buy a Mac Pro, you keep it for 5 years. 5 years of wonderful usage, without stupid driver errors, BSODs, infections and other stupid Windows problems.

Most of the stuff you can upgrade in macs (especially imacs) you have to have apple do it and then get raped up the ass with their over the top prices, especially for ram and hard drives.
Upgrading for pc's has fuck all to do with anything being slow, its more the fact that gamers like to upgrade to the latest and greatest, they like eye candy and tons of anti aliasing so when newer games come out that push older hardware they upgrade for that reason.

Considering theres a few hundred million pc gamers out there (a number that dwarfs the total mac install base a few times over) clearly there is a market for people that want the latest and greatest hardware.
Also you miss the point about imac harddrive upgrades, if you do it yourself im sure thats classed as a voided warranty. Unless you go the external route.

But programs are much more stable and efficient when running on a Mac. It has been like that for a long time and continues to be so.
And really, it's much more easier doing pro work when you don't have to deal with registry cleaning, defragmenting and malware.
And not all programs are available for Windows. The fantastic Final Cut Studio, for instance, is mac only. So is Logic Studio.

Stability is in the ey of the beholder, many people have no problems using programs like aavid which is why they continue to be used.
Some programs may be on mac but not windows but their windows based equivilants are usually just as good. Adobe premiere and after effects can do just about anything final cut can for instance.

I've tried Premiere and it's not only less intuitive but also less powerful than Final Cut Pro+Compressor+Color+Sound Track Pro. Also After Effects is beaten by FCP + Motion + Live Type etc.
and most video editing pros would agree with me.

At least the PPC was the defacto architecture for graphical work back in the days. Despite the technological advance, there is still no contest.

I dunno if theres any truth to that when compared to core 2 cpu's. ive seen some benchmarks comparing athlon 64 and pentium 4 and the g5 came out on top. I seen one by techreport where the pentium 3 bested a g4 in fp ops.
Do you know of any benchmarks that test this that i could run?

This is just something I've heard though, but I do know the PPC was adopted by the 3d developing masses because it was superior than any other architecture.
Do a google search for fbench, ffbench and bench-float.c
I have no clue whether those are safe programs. The last one I believe is safe, as it is from the GNU folks (I guess you have to have Linux to run it though).

instruction set != architecture
Current x86 CPU's have a really good, efficient architecture.
Intel's Netburst architecture was pretty crap in terms of efficiency though, and the PowerPC 5 CPU's could rightly be considered superior.
That's why I went with AMD's K8 chips instead.

You'll be responsible for the replaced parts obviously, but if you have a problem related to the Apple hardware, you're covered by the warranty, whether you modified the iMac or not.

Apples warranty page states the following
"Apples One-Year Limited Warranty for MacBook excludes coverage for damage resulting from a number of events, including accident, liquid spill or submersion, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications."
Im not sure if adding in a new hard drive to an imac would count as an unauthorised modificiation or serivce but it would appear to point in that direction.

As for upgrading a mac pro even thats limited, if you want a gpu upgrade you have to wait for apple to first support it then you can go and buy it, and thats normally 8 months + from when the pc equivilant was released.
Can you go out and buy a bluray drive right now and have it work in osx? Nope. Again you've to wait for apple to support it and thats seems to come down to when herr jobs dictates that he wants it supported.

I've honestly not has issues with windows since windows 98. The "experience" I'm talking about is one where I've honestly not had virii or any major system hick-ups.
With proper upkeep windows machines are fine, given you have the time/resources to do as such.
They're certainly not the right choice for everyone but they work as they should almost all of the time.
My work machine is a mac and it does what it needs to. At home, when I don't use my free time to play games, I'm using arch linux.

Its not inconsistent at all. With any piece of technology there is some upkeep to it, if users are not knowledgeable enough to upkeep machines they have they should educate themselves on how to do this or pay someone else to do it. Switching to mac is not a solution as macs have upkeep requirements as well.

As for OSX, the maintenance it quite simple. Launch Disk Utility and repair permission. Not all Mac users know this sure. But they will find out without a penny of cost by attending free classes all over the country at Apple Stores or by visiting Apple. Don't compare OSX to Winblows. It is a crime!

You can find out how to do maintenance on a pc by simple going to Google and executing a search. Not everyone lives near an apple store, either. It just takes a little bit of internet searching for either so there is no reason for anyone to go to a store for basic instructions unless they have zero reading comprehension.
Also, astronomical costs associated with virii? Avast! is free and probably one of the best anti-virus programs on the market.

I'm probably not gonna be getting another imac until like the next gen. :D i have the low-end 2008 imac, i love it. But I am not going to switch to Nvidia because ATI is better for design/photos. We're just a higher mid class, we're not rich. I'm saving up for an aluminum macbook over the summer

Jgalva88 and nickasatoutian, get a clue dumb asses. The iMac is indeed a piece of shit compared to a Dell or HP for the same price. PC make much better video editng machines because of the generic ATX design (bays, slots, rackmount etc).

1. Yes Video Editors use RAID a lot but gamers do too. RAID 0 for example.
2. This video is about iMacs. iMacs obviously don't support RAID. iMacs are primarily aimed towards Pro Video editors, Mac Pro's are. Mac Pro's do support RAID.
3. All Mac's aren't "Supposed to be used for Video Editing". Do you think a Professional Video Editor is going to got out and buy a Mac Mini or an iMac? No.
Yes Mac's are good for that but no just that.

Windows has had no fundamental changes to its GUI ever! Not ever! It's architecture has slowly evolved to include industry standards that they bitterly implamented. Poorly a that. Windows has been behind the curve compared with Linux, NextStep and BeoS while having Billions to spend. Xp was ancient when sold as new. XP is a mummy now. Vista was fail. One thing I will give them, the price drop is great. Pity there just isn't enough incentive for me to upgrade right now. If only I'd discovered Apple before I upgraded my PC :(

Unfortunately if I upgraded right now from my 8600M, 6 GB, 2.66 GHz C2D Hackintosh I'd actually end up with a slower machine with less RAM! Arghh, come on Apple, why make it so hard for me to get rid of the last PC in the house???

To be honest I was a bit dissapointed. The only real change is the video card, and actually the GT130 is slower than the old GeForce 8800 card. So unless you opt for the 4850 there isn't really much that's been 'upgraded' other than the memory. Some benchmarks even have the new iMacs running slower than the old ones if you compare equal clock speeds.
I was hoping for i7 so I'd have an excuse to upgrade from my 2 year old Hackintosh.

The new Mac Mini can use the new displays, and the new iMac has Mini-Displayport on the back as well, so I'd asume it can.

(1) Any software you have on Windows, we have an equivelant, if not better on Mac
(2) Our software equivelant is usually far better than its Windows counter part.
(3) We have software and software quality you can only dream of.
(4) You can keep your games. Apple doesn't give a shit about gamers and never will. They look at you and laugh. As do I. You make no-one any money except MS and game devs.
