I was 12 yrs old and remember watching the game live. Haven't seen nothing like it today. Kobe's similar move comes close, but the hang time and control was and still is incredible. Something else too, when he pulled that move, Julius wasn't in his prime. This is a Dr J in his 30's.
@epics7 - He was 30 on the nose. And it's arguable to say, "he wasn't in his prime", maybe just out of his prime (a faint maybe). The guy did go on to win the league MVP a year later. His ball club made the finals 3 out of four seasons(80, 82 & 83)...and took the chip in '83 (with a lil help from a guy named, Moses *lol*). I thought Erving was playing some of the best basketball in his career in those seasons.
the camera angle dowsn't completely do the shot justice-it captures the incredible hang time---but from the rear angle you forget he went at the basket from the Right Wing of the top of the Key--not from anywhere near the baseline--which just makes the whole thing more awesome,,,,
I dont tHink people respect the fact its hard to do even without 2 great defensive players in your face, half the kids who say its easy cant even hold the ball with one hand...
@WhAtZCrAcKiNN Well said. I was 12 yrs old watching that game. Doc was what Jordan was during his playing years. Unstoppable. I remember cheering for my team the Lakers. I remember saying to myself, "Finally, they have him trapped!" Somehow this guy still found a way to score with all of the defense trapping him. That's serious air time, control of the ball with extremely larger hands and control of your body. All of the keyboard trash talkers can't do that and Doc wasn't in his prime then.
I wish he would have gotten fouled then it would have been a 3 point play. I love the look on Kareem's face he's like WHAT??? NO!!!! If The Doc wouldn't have made the basket Bobby Jones was right there to tip it in.
If you go back and watch Julius' dunks, you'll notice how much above the rim he was vs Jordan. Jordan could jump, but he was the master of illusion. He'd shoot so many shots on the way down. Look at Dr's all time dunks and you'll see that he was way up there and he dunked over 7 footers who were waiting for him at the rim. My fav is when he dunked on Artis Gilmore in the All Star game in the early 80's A-train was waiting for him, saw him coming and got posterized..
damn people, it's not ranked, nothing was suppose to be classified when they made NBA's 60 Greatest Playoff Moments, the just put toghether those moments ;p and @theehibachi classified it
Yeah I agree with u about the tougher shot part, but Jordan's won the championship. This was a momentum changer (still big, don't get me wrong, but not as big as game-winning shot). This shot is definitely more fun to watch, though.
What made MJ great that many overlook is his hands, and DR J had HUGE hands too. Maybe even bigger than MJ's. This is why he can palm the ball like a mini ball on the run.
My question is, how in the world did he palm the ball? He didn't even use his other hand to help him grip it, he just catches the ball in his right and palms it immediately off the dribble.
Visual proof that Dr. J is the greatest basketball player to ever walk on planet earth. Without Dr. J, Jordan ends up a crack dealer in jerkwater USA!
Dr J was MJ before there was an MJ perfected what the earlier greats had done. A complete force on both sides of the ball, clutch and as nice as this is, MJ was the human highlight reel.
I actually saw an interview Dr. J gave about that move, and he said at the time that he didn't think it would be a big deal, that it might make the game highlight reel but at the time he thought it was just two points. The Doctor was the classiest guy in the NBA, that's for damn sure, if Kobe did that shot it would have resulted in shouting, taunting, and noise, for Dr. J, its just a smile and run back for defense.
dr. j is awesome i read some where that Magic Johnson thought to himself in that game right after he did that if they should take the ball out r ask him to do it again!
It's the fourth quarter, in game 4 of the NBA finals, with his team down 2-1 (and without home court advantage). This shot helped his team go on to win the game by 3 points and tie the series rather than be down 3-1.
@siukong I agree totally, it was not playground or training camp. It didn't count a title, I concede but the 2 "connections", the old (Boston) and the new (LA) gave Bird and Magic the chance to have as companions tens of stars to win the Rim! Kareem, Parish, Mc. Hale, Cooper, Nixon, Maxwell, Worthy, Archibald, Ainge, Wilkes etc. but The Doc have no real winners til Moses, and he won the Title. The centers he had for 6 years: Caldwell Jones and Dawkins, the others had Walton, Jabbar, Unseld...
@Hoolaballoo Yeah I agree, and Dr. J was 8 yrs. older than magic and bird. I wish he had his hay day while in the nba. It would've been even more competitive back then.
The single greatest move in the history of the NBA. Hard to believe that this man does not get the "cred" he deserves. Network guys credit Bird, Magic, and Jordan for "saving the NBA." Might be...but this guy left them something to save.
Was it Elgin who averaged a triple double for an entire season? I won't argue with you. Dr. J was before cable and I was a kid - he was like an alien to me. I saw bits and pieces of him. Dr. J, Alan Page, Jim Marshall, Pete Rose, Ken Griffey Sr., Johnny Bench and Chuck Foreman were my heroes
Gave me the chills.....absolutely spectacular! This has to be the best shot in NBA history. To see the Doctor floating like this....truly a privilege to watch.
Julius always rose to the occassion. His greatest feats seem to be against top-flight competition when the stakes are at it's highest. Doc has at least 5 immortal plays against Jabbar alone.
from small forwards julius had biggest hands in league, similar like later mj from guards and othis thorpe from forwards, also darryl dawkins had big hands too,but he was biiiiig men:)
He used to do this and much more astonishing stuff in the ABA in at the Harlem Rucker tournaments. He truly was a wizard with the ball. Bobby Gross of the Blazers once said Julius dribbling the ball down court was faster then Gross sprinting down court without the ball.
I was watching some show and they showed this clip then they showed magic talking about it. he said he turned to worthy(i think) and said- "you think we could ask him to do that again?" thanks for the memories doc and for bringing us our last championship- 25yrs and counting
