Violence against women in condoned in Deu 25: 11-12, while 1 Timothy 2:11-15 says women should live in "silent submission" and be punished for Original Sin through childbirth. Also, Ex 21 condones slavery and tells you who can be your slave, for how long, how you can beat him, and how can drive an awl through his ear to make him your slave forever. Read the whole thing. @dsydebot Every single one of us uses reason to determine morality by examining the evidence. In this case, let's examine slave-based societies and the consequences of immoral behavior. I do not wish to be a slave, and because of that I can use empathy for those who are oppressed as slaves, and I determine that a society where no one is a slave is less likely to victimize anyone. Reason also tells me I must contribute to society. This conclusion is an application of the scientific method.

(1) Whether morality factually exists, (2) whether slaves are necessarily victimized by the simple fact that they *are* slaves, (3) whether, pending our answer to q. 1, it constitutes a privation of morality to victimize another person, etc.
Now, empathy is an emotion, and emotions are *not* determinate of facts. Empathy cannot therefore be used to determine whether a moral claim is factual.
@dsydebot I would argue that the answer to all three is Yes, and that if empathy is not a reliable method then we can also examine the treatment of slaves vs. the environment of masters as evidence of injustice. But let's simply: I'm willing to say for the sake of argument that I don't know where morality comes from, but I do know that it does NOT come from scripture; in fact, it would seem we have it in spite of scripture.

This is turning into a discussion about the origin and definition of morality, which is an entirely separate conversation. Where morality comes from, while an interesting point, is not relevant; what's relevant is that we can agree it clearly does NOT come from scripture, and that was my original point.

When people go through the Bible, they cherry-pick which verses they follow. "Love thy neighbor" is picked because it sounds nice, while the parts about slavery or stoning children are ignored. The fact that we do this suggests that we all have a criterion we use to determine morality that is independent of the scripture itself.

Nov.23, 2010 at 401 Bloomsbury Rd. in Bloomsbury, NJ when my husband and I have witnessed the dancing sun in front of the grotto of Our Holy Mother.It changes in different colors and have lasted till we have almost finished the 5th Glorious mystery.

Mary was sinful. No where in scripture does it say she did not sin. She is blessed for bearing the Christ, but she still refers to Him as "my Savior" (Luke 1:47). All of humankind is imperfect, for we all go astray. Mary did indeed bear Christ, but she is not the "mother of God", there is no such thing. God is God, (I am who I am; the Alpha and Omega (Exodus 3:14, Revelation 22:13). Christ was born of us, and His lineage was not a sinless lineage, but He was sinless and He was indeed God.

What i dont understand is how some of you people would think that the Blessed Mother is evil. She isnt evil for coming to earth. She comes from the grace her son gives her because she is trying to HELP his people..not take his Glory away from him... Why would the mother of God do that? In fact, Why shouldnt Mary get praise? I went to this link and it's a long booklet of revelations supposedly from God. If there was a specific one you wanted me to read, gimme the page number. Why do you think no human can write these? Have you ever read the Quran or the Tripitaka of Buddhism? What makes these revelations any more "inhuman" than those?

And by the way, I've read both the Bible and Quran. Both of them include passages that greatly offend me and both support violence against women. I saw nothing that made one any more valid than the other.

Violence against women in condoned in Deu 25: 11-12, while 1 Timothy 2:11-15 says women should live in "silent submission" and be punished for Original Sin through childbirth. Also, Ex 21 condones slavery and tells you who can be your slave, for how long, how you can beat him, and how can drive an awl through his ear to make him your slave forever. Read the whole thing. I can Google "miracles" if I want, but if it's so obvious, then u should have an accredited source readily available.

In other words, the Bible DOES support slavery, even it then changes its mind later. And if women really are punished through childbirth because of Eve, I find that sexist and offensive. Does it really make sense to punish ALL WOMEN because of what an ancestor did? I can forgive people, but God can't? It's sick!

Secondly, NT is sexist because it says women should live in silent submission to their husbands (1 Tim 2). Third, EVEN IF GOD CHANGED THE RULES in the NT, the OT still says awful things. The fact that God EVER condoned slavery, even if he later recanted, is enough to offend me,

@dsydebot Every single one of us uses reason to determine morality by examining the evidence. In this case, let's examine slave-based societies and the consequences of immoral behavior. I do not wish to be a slave, and because of that I can use empathy for those who are oppressed as slaves, and I determine that a society where no one is a slave is less likely to victimize anyone. Reason also tells me I must contribute to society. This conclusion is an application of the scientific method.

(1) Whether morality factually exists, (2) whether slaves are necessarily victimized by the simple fact that they *are* slaves, (3) whether, pending our answer to q. 1, it constitutes a privation of morality to victimize another person, etc.
Now, empathy is an emotion, and emotions are *not* determinate of facts. Empathy cannot therefore be used to determine whether a moral claim is factual.

@dsydebot I would argue that the answer to all three is Yes, and that if empathy is not a reliable method then we can also examine the treatment of slaves vs. the environment of masters as evidence of injustice. But let's simply: I'm willing to say for the sake of argument that I don't know where morality comes from, but I do know that it does NOT come from scripture; in fact, it would seem we have it in spite of scripture.

Where morality comes from, while an interesting point, is not relevant; what's relevant is that we can agree it clearly does NOT come from scripture, and that was my original point.

My point is that to indict Scripture of immoral teaching, you must first demonstrate that your own conception of morality is accurate. When people go through the Bible, they cherry-pick which verses they follow. "Love thy neighbor" is picked because it sounds nice, while the parts about slavery or stoning children are ignored. The fact that we do this suggests that we all have a criterion we use to determine morality that is independent of the scripture itself.

So if someone says, "Even if we can't demonstrate that God exists, we can still say He DOES exist because that is just an understanding Christians have", know that your line of reasoning led you to make a similar claim about something you believe (i.e., that slavery is immoral). And you have my word: I will become the pupil of any atheist who demonstrates the factual existence of morality scientifically.

@TheJesusSucks I wasn't trying to argue for the existence of God per se. I was rather trying to show a parallel in a crass sort of Fideism between yourself and many Theists;
1) You believe, without scientific evidence, that it is wrong to, say, rape and mutilate an innocent child.
2) Many Christians believe, without scientific evidence, that God exists.
I personally prefer for ignorance to be confessed, so I disprove of these kinds of propositions.
