Ah two worlds I love very much combining here - aviation incidents and 9/11 research. Here's the deal; calm down you ACI viewers, not everyone has the money for CGI recreations that Nat. Geo or the BBC has. I know you saw it in the ACI list and are disappointed.
Second, the official story may be correct here. The Korean Air pilots are known for their poor communication and it has been an issue in at least one fatal incident of theirs. Why they would squawk something akin to mayday is beyond me
after interrogating the pilots, learned the whole ordeal was caused by a translation error.[5] The Korean pilot stated that he had been ordered by Air Traffic Control to change the transponder signal while Air Traffic Control denied having done so.
Read Touching History by Lynne Spencer. The KAL crew wasn't proficient with English. They confused ATC requests to confirm squawking hijack code. KAL thought they were being asked if they understood that ATC was diverting them due to an earlier hijacking in the US. KAL thoought they should be squawking hijack to comply with ATC.
ATC won't ask crew "are you being hijacked?" in case hijacker is listening. ONE method ATC uses is "confirm squawking xxxx".
