lamborghini is a daughter company of audi and the gallardo has an audi engine and not the audi an gallardo engine. lamborghini is using audi technology, not the other way. the gallardo onely got this engine before they put it into the audi but it is a audi engine. also the gumpert apollo has a similar audi engine onboard, but with whay more hp (about 800hp).

@mattzee - I agree the new Gallardo 5.2 is based on the torquer Audi derivate but the original Audi S8 (D3) 5.2 took the block from the Gallardo 5.0 V10. However, it's fair to say that all engines were developed by the VW Audi Group. The first car to have the VAG developed V10 5.0 was the Gallardo, the next car was the S8 with a 5.2 variant. This was deemed superior (better torque) so they tweaked it and put it in the new V10 5.2 Gallardo. Anyhow, it's a good engine what ever car it's in :-)

0-60 in 4.9 seconds is pretty good for a heavy car. An 03 Mustang Cobra does it in 4.5 for around $24k currently. Apples to oranges, sure, but for $90k+, why would a rich fella choose that?! I'm looking at the Dupont Registry right now and I see Vipers, 360 Modena's, 911 Turbo's, AMG Mercs, BMW M cars, Bently's, Jags, Muscle cars.. just TONS of slightly used vehicles that trump this S8. Yeah I feel sorry for you, as I'm not American I can't really grasp the American taste of cars, some Americans seem to blindly love their American built vehicles while others admire European cars more.

In my opinion, (and this is just my opinion) is that, OVERALL European cars TEND to be better, although some American cars, regardless of their terrible built quality, horrid interiors and general lack of care and attention aren't too bad. Corvette ZR1, Ford GT and Comaro SS are amazing!

It's not a "detuned" Gallardo engine.

The Gallardo is 5.0L 40 valve, this S8 is FSI 5.2L 40 valve. The only exception is the new LP560 is FSI 5.2L 40 valve... but the heads are completely different.
