Awesome stuff! I'm in a position, like many with the way the economy (U.S.) is, where I'm second-guessing my decision to follow the herd. It seems trying to be average doesn't cut it. @RubberDucksCool i said y wait it dosent matter if your 13 im 15 im just saying alot of things can happen in that period of time that can keep you from your dream
People are making a living by becoming slaves from 9 to 5 all their life and the guy instead bicycles around the world and have a blast ,meets tons of people discover the beauty of the world and live a life as free as you be can how cool is that !!!
That is hardcore, you're not just riding a tremendous distance you are also riding through some not always so hospitable territory. I'm sure there were amazing things to see in those countries but I would still be afraid of getting shot or permanently thrown in prison.
wow! that was great . I hope you gor another job and girlfriend. I hope you work in a bike shop. someone would be a fool not to take your advice on bikes.
@onthinice766 There have been groups to do a variation. Usually about 18,000 miles, but they go so fast most people have to skip sections. You're better off in groups of 1-9. After that it gets hard to get everyone on the same bus or plane if need be.
How much money i need to travel around the world?... $30,000 maybe? for five years? what kind of bike i need to travel?... a aluminium mountain bike? or pure Mountain bike iron?
What was your biggest setback for the trip? I'm going to be touring the continental united states over the next year. musta worn through a bunch or tires huh?
If I could do anything, I would have joined you on your journey. How inspiring. May I ask how much money you had to put forward when you first started?
@ScottyStoll can you add me on facebook ? I would love to talk to you. I know you must be sick of talking to people about your adventures by now. i wont bother you to much. Maybe next time I am in the states we can have a beer together I was in L.A. and Los Vegas Last November.
That is an absolute ballsy and amazing journey. What an endeavor. That must have been thrilling, truly amazing. 3:08 "If I can do that I can do anything" Well said.
@scientist1882 I agree, very well said. Watching this video makes me feel like cashing in on my property and just heading for the hills with a trusty old bicycle by my side. He is so inspiring.
I'm reading your book right now and I LOVE it!!! Best cycle touring book I ever read (and I've read them all!). Better than Miles from Nowhere, Odysseus' Last Stand, and Metal Cowboy! Scott is not paying me to say this. He doesn't even know me!
@BlueTapp1 Wow! Thx for the testimonial. I'm honored. It took me years to write it, and I'm glad the book is finding its purpose. If you could copy this to an Amazon review that would be super cool! It makes a difference.
@ScottyStoll You got it! I'm reading it on my Kindle so I'll copy this at Amazon. I actually looked up your website to see if you've written any other books. Hope there will be more in the future.
@BlueTapp1 Thx for your help. Publicizing a book is a lot like riding up a really long mountain with no end in sight. I've definitely got some more books in the works.
@ScottyStoll Thank for the reply, very nice of you and indeed inspiring. I am going to start my journey early 2013 and excited since I got the idea of cycling around the world :)
@ScottyStoll Awesome, I bet it is, beautiful place, once my hip heals, I'm defiantly planning on going there a few times during the summer on my bike, I'm in Eureka.
@LuckyGuu He is harvesting wood for fuel to sell. He walks his cart up the mountain and rolls it down at the end of the day. BTW, it is better to ask yourself: What am I afraid of? And how does that benefit me? Then you can see the reality of your emotions and choose a different path.
Scott, starting my own adventure soon, crossing Europe, I was wondering if you could tell me what bike parts you found wearing out the quickest and most, and if you could start your journey again knowing what you know now. What spares would you bring?
@darkcowboyhero I'd love to do it again. Wheels! Get good strong wheels. And get the best seat on the market. You probably won't wear out your bike too much just going across Europe. There's a lot more info on supplies and tips and tricks on my website.
@ScottyStoll did your lower back ever ache from your type of bike? I think I would select a BMX, so my spine would be more upright. I can't wait to read your book, thanks for writing it!!
@LuckyGuu I think everything hurt, but one adapts :) My bike had a very relaxed fit for a mountain bike. Much easier on the back than a traditional touring bike. I hope you enjoy my book. It was a true labor of love.
@darkcowboyhero I think you should ride an adult size BMX bike and pull a trailer. The wheels would be 3 or 4 thick plastic spokes. Take a protein powder that can be mixed with water. This way, if it's 44 miles to the next food/energy supply you'll be good to go and actually building muscle as you go. Try Isopure brand or one you prefer. No, I do n't work for Isopure. Schwinn now makes a square-ish seat, no need to have numb-butt. A BMX would permit you to ride with you back near vertical
Hi Scotty, A fellow traveler gave me your book in Ghana. What a great travel companion it made. Loved your adventures and insight into inner journey. When is the sequel coming out?
@KLateesha Thanks. "Falling Uphill" has been to some interesting places like the summit of Mt. Fuji. I just published the children's edition illustrated by an elementary school. And I've got a sequel partially written. I just need to go back to Africa and find some more "trouble" :)
Great images! How did you pan and zoom on the still frame images? Definitely the journey of a lifetime! How did you secure enough food/calories for all of the energy you were burning? After being imprisoned, did you continue to ride or leave the country? Sorry for all of the questions, am facinated with your adventure. Thanks!
@GreatWriteUp HI. I did the pans in flim editing software. I carried a whole backpack of food and had to learn to eat right. Kept going. More FAQs on my site and books.
I noticed on one of the photos you had bottles taped to your bike. This may sound dumb but how did you get they off? cut through the tape each time you needed to drink? Thinking of going on tour and I'm looking for clever ways to carry water and tools!
@CptRobotB61 Good question! I made water bottle holders out of old soda bottles, duct tape and innertubes (used as rubberbands). Then I could slide in another soda bottle full of water. I did this in the deserts when I needed extra. This method saved weight as I could throw them away when I didn't need them anymore. And it also is more easier on the bike to attach them to the frame. rather than putting too much weight on one wheel or in a pannier. U can see close up on my website. Good luck.
This guys a legend,im on the way to Africa at the moment from Ireland,on the east coast of Spain as i type, went through ireland,Wales,England,France and now here, truely amazing. Its my first cyclingtrip too, didn even own a bike untill i decided to do this.Anyone thinking og it,Get up and go!!
Pure enlightenment is life without a helmet and confiscated film doesn't show up on its previous owners video. Was the 33% grade hill your version of picking up the cross like Christ? I would go back and edit that making it a 34 degree ascension, which would raise you higher than Christ!
With money you can do anything, you must be rich. I can barley afford to ride in tours 4 hours from my house. I really can't affort them but go anyway, the Hotter n Hell Century almost broke me.
I can't believe people actually do these things to find the PURPOSE of LIFE. C'mon, it's nothing hard to get. 2000 years ago, someone died for YOU on the cross... the purpose of life is found in the Bible. read it buddy, saves you much more energy than traveling the world and finding no answers.
People cycle the world to LIVE. whats the point in saying 'the Bible tells us everything so why experience it' Im also a long distance cyclist and its better then sitting in a dead end job holding to your Bible for comfort.
Damn fine job at only 100 hrs! Compacting 4 years into 3 minutes. I've done film editing.. I'll be cycling from Beijing to Bangkok starting in October. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks!
GreatWriteUp 1 year ago
@GreatWriteUp HI. I did the pans in flim editing software. I carried a whole backpack of food and had to learn to eat right. Kept going. More FAQs on my site and books.

I noticed on one of the photos you had bottles taped to your bike. This may sound dumb but how did you get they off? cut through the tape each time you needed to drink? Thinking of going on tour and I'm looking for clever ways to carry water and tools!
CptRobotB61 1 year ago
@CptRobotB61 Good question! I made water bottle holders out of old soda bottles, duct tape and innertubes (used as rubberbands). Then I could slide in another soda bottle full of water. I did this in the deserts when I needed extra. This method saved weight as I could throw them away when I didn't need them anymore. And it also is more easier on the bike to attach them to the frame. rather than putting too much weight on one wheel or in a pannier. U can see close up on my website. Good luck.

This is incredible.
Which was your favourite country or were there too many to choose from?
Who were the friendliest people?
And what was the scariest experience?
Thanks! Really inspired by this.

@herbal1971
Every country had some good and bad. All seem a bit better in retrospect. But loved Asia in general.
People in Argentina were surprisingly friendly
Scariest -- being thrown in prison. Perhaps nearly being run over.
Lots more FAQs on my website.

AnimationGenius 1 year ago
@AnimationGenius I did read it. I wanted the actual experience.
ScottyStoll 1 year ago
not everyone belives in that.
People cycle the world to LIVE. whats the point in saying 'the Bible tells us everything so why experience it' Im also a long distance cyclist and its better then sitting in a dead end job holding to your Bible for comfort.
