I'm old enough to remember when Leno was funny and Letterman was cool. Now Jay is just embarrassing. It’s sad to watch young actresses squirm at his creepy “jokes” and leers. During his monologues he apparently thinks it makes jokes funnier if he shouts every punch line. Meanwhile Letterman has become a tyrant to his guests, races through jokes like he's got a plane to catch, and comes off like a grumpy old coot. Neither one is funny.

Craig Ferguson seems like he'd be a hoot to hang with, and I've tried to watch his show. He's funny, but I just can't bare his so easy going demeanor, as to seem to not give a shit, so I don't either. It gets ridiculous, face in the camera monologues that try to pretend they're casual & unprepared, "mouth organ or awkward pause". I only watch on Hulu, Internet, so I can just watch clips or interviews of guest I like. Other wise it's too much of "hey I am strange, yawn". Yawn back!

WHAT THE FUNK? WHO? Jon Stewart beats CoCo. Ouch! There's an old saying: "Liars figure and figures lie". First TV ratings are controversial, how they are collected and so on. They never asked me. Second you can dissect ratings to just cable, all channels, time slot, genre; get the picture.
You're right CoCo has a younger avg age unemployed pot smoking smaller audience, than Leno. However people w/ MONEY are older. CoCo's super fans are misfits. Ratings vary; CoCo's trend is down, Leno's up! The people who hate Leno, vow never to watch, never watched anyway or don't watch TV much, including CoCo. This is just a cause-celeb to whine about for them. Advertisers know this. CoCo's Ad time is cheaper, but there are better shows to reach 18-24, than TBS at 11-12AM.

Because the younger audience is, statistically, more likely to spend their money even though they have less of it. That's why you are always hearing about that 18-34/49 demographic. The execs and advertisers have researched and believe that they are more likely to sell to the younger audience whereas the older, wealthier viewers are more careful with their cash.

Leno is soundly beating Letterman (and all other late night) again, as the Tonight Show always had, but under CoCo, Letterman was beating the Tonight Show. ALL LATE NIGHT SHOWS HAVE TAKEN A RATING HIT. Due to economy, people are going to over the air (OTA), so CoCo being on basic cable will be hurt. All other late night (except comedy central) is on OTA networks. CoCo's youngest "fans" tend to not watch TV anyway. Leno is just a "parental figure" they rebel against.
The Jay Leno Show was a bomb, and that's what was screwing over the local news telecasts, not to mention Conan's Tonight Show run. Not to mention that it already screwed over many 10 pm shows, like Southland (which had thankfully been saved by TNT).

Another point of fact you're neglecting is that Letterman beat Leno for (and I may be incorrect about the actual time span but if memory serves) several years. I watch little if any live TV any more, I record on my DVR or watch off the web. I might watch 10 min of an hour talk show, catch monologue, may be a bit, guest or band if good. The convenience of "on demand" viewing from the web is worth a few 30 sec commercials. In the day Johnny was it, no cable or satellite. Now we have up 4 shows going at a time from 11-2am, plus comedy centrals Jon Stewart and Colbert or Chelsea Handler. The future wide area wireless on-demand.

I'm old enough to remember when Leno was funny and Letterman was cool. Now Jay is just embarrassing. It’s sad to watch young actresses squirm at his creepy “jokes” and leers. During his monologues he apparently thinks it makes jokes funnier if he shouts every punch line. Meanwhile Letterman has become a tyrant to his guests, races through jokes like he's got a plane to catch, and comes off like a grumpy old coot. Neither one is funny.

I agree Roots, cool band. Jimmy Fallon may have scripted bits, "thank you notes", games, monologue of course, however he's witty, an honest to goodness improv player who can sing, do imitations. Steve Allen was great on the piano, singing funny stuff. Most cerebral host, Dick Cavett. Best interviewer, Mike Douglas. Best? Still Johnny Carson for me. CoCo's often too sophomoric, too much look at me I'm a clown, but he tries. To each his own.

Craig Ferguson seems like he'd be a hoot to hang with, and I've tried to watch his show. He's funny, but I just can't bare his so easy going demeanor, as to seem to not give a shit, so I don't either. It gets ridiculous, face in the camera monologues that try to pretend they're casual & unprepared, "mouth organ or awkward pause". I only watch on Hulu, Internet, so I can just watch clips or interviews of guest I like. Other wise it's too much of "hey I am strange, yawn". Yawn back!

Leno is only 60. Carson retired at 67 after 30 yrs. Leno at the time he announced his (forced) retirement 2004 had the Tonight show only 12 yrs, age 54. Not very fair or smart of NBC, since he was #1. Your personal boycott aside, Leno's ratings are through the roof #1 gain, with a distant 2nd place Letterman. Leno even wins in the younger demo over all late night. "CoCo" had the Tonight show 6 months and he failed. He got screwed but made it worse by threatening and quiting.

You're right CoCo has a younger avg age unemployed pot smoking smaller audience, than Leno. However people w/ MONEY are older. CoCo's super fans are misfits. Ratings vary; CoCo's trend is down, Leno's up! The people who hate Leno, vow never to watch, never watched anyway or don't watch TV much, including CoCo. This is just a cause-celeb to whine about for them. Advertisers know this. CoCo's Ad time is cheaper, but there are better shows to reach 18-24, than TBS at 11-12AM.

Because the younger audience is, statistically, more likely to spend their money even though they have less of it. That's why you are always hearing about that 18-34/49 demographic. The execs and advertisers have researched and believe that they are more likely to sell to the younger audience whereas the older, wealthier viewers are more careful with their cash.

Difference between Jay Leno and Conan-O-CoCo, are ratings. Leno has ratings and CoCo does not. Look up the NY Times article Jan 29, 2011. Leno is #1 of all late night proving the format is a winner. Leno is even beating everyone in the younger adult demographic. However CoCo does well with 12 yr olds. Also Harvard's gave Leno the Hasty Pudding Man of the Year award.... and CoCo graduated from there. All late night host can be funny but CoCo is just not that funny.

Leno is soundly beating Letterman (and all other late night) again, as the Tonight Show always had, but under CoCo, Letterman was beating the Tonight Show. ALL LATE NIGHT SHOWS HAVE TAKEN A RATING HIT. Due to economy, people are going to over the air (OTA), so CoCo being on basic cable will be hurt. All other late night (except comedy central) is on OTA networks. CoCo's youngest "fans" tend to not watch TV anyway. Leno is just a "parental figure" they rebel against.

The Jay Leno Show was a bomb, and that's what was screwing over the local news telecasts, not to mention Conan's Tonight Show run. Not to mention that it already screwed over many 10 pm shows, like Southland (which had thankfully been saved by TNT).
Beyond that, Jay Leno has been mostly self-serving and self-pitying, taking stabs at NBC, but not sticking up for Conan like the other late night hosts did. (Is it any wonder why they're savaging Jay?)

But he even agreed to the thing. As to why Conan said no to the midnight thing, he did it for the sake of the Tonight Show to keep it from being devalued.
And again, Leno being #1 means as much as McDonald's being #1. And his lead has faltered, so much so that the Daily Show at least once beat it out.

Another point of fact you're neglecting is that Letterman beat Leno for (and I may be incorrect about the actual time span but if memory serves) several years. Then the Hugh Grant Scandal exploded and Jay had him on as the first one to interview him and the tides turned. It was at least a year but I honestly believe that it was closer to 2. Again, I may be wrong there. It is almost ironic that, even with the terrible lead in ratings at 10 Conan was beating Dave last year until Daves scandal

Lenos 1st 16 mos was behind Letterman. 16 yrs following Leno #1, except when Dave had a big guest or his sex scandal. Hugh Grant Scandal? That happened in 1995. See of it makes a dent in Leno or Letterman's ratings. Fact Leno beat Letterman for 16 yrs and CoCo was getting his ass whooped. People tuned into CoCo and tuned out. Yawn!

Johnny Carson & Letterman is irrelevant to Leno v CoCo. Johnny retired after 30 yrs, picked no one. NBC owns the show. Leno clearly the winning choice, beats Letterman's times 2. To negotiate the forced retirement of a #1 host 5 yrs ahead of time, host only 12 yrs/54yo at the time, to keep an unknown late host of string dancing & masturbating bear was idiotic. CoCo put this mess in motion by threatening to quit. He threatened to quit again w/ crap ratings. NBC said bye with $30M. Leno #1 again.

Conan O'Brien, I like him but he's NO Johnny Carson. You hate Leno for some weird reason, but he beat Letterman and still does. NBC made the right move. If you like Letterman, fine, no accounting for taste. I like all of them, however Letterman is tired and so was Conan. The only new different shows are Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Fallon, who has the coolest band. They're both late shows. Jimmy Kimmel is kind of a bore with a few moments. Leno is comfortable for people and CoCo quit.

NBC decided to move the show 30 min, not Leno. CoCo had 1/4th the ratings of #1 Leno when his forced retirement in 2004 was announced, after only 12 yrs hosting, because CoCo threatened TO QUIT IF HE DIDN'T GET THE TONIGHT SHOW. Leno should have said NO! CoCo tried it again, I'M QUITTING IF YOU MAKE ME MOVE 30 MIN. NBC said BYE. WHY BLAME LENO? Should he support CoCo who stabbed him in the back. It's business. CoCo got $30 mill and a basic cable show this fall. TUNE IN! GET OVER IT

Learn to read jackass. No one said Johnny Carson was forced to retire retire early idiot. He was The Tonight Show host for 30 yrs (1962–1992), retired at age 66. He wanted to retire way before that, taking off every Monday and whole weeks. The point is Leno's forced retirement was announced he was 54 yo and host for only 12 yrs, with #1 ratings, double Letterman's rating. Carson was forced out by NBC due to CoCo (age 47) threats.

Jay Leno was on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show 1977-1992, and Leno was Johnny's favorite guest host from 1987-1992 appearing over 50 times till Johnny retired.

Carson had guest hosts each Mon, sometimes for entire weeks during Johnny's frequent vacations late in his run. Joan Rivers was one of Johnny's favorites but she took a talk show on cable that failed after 6 mo. Johnny black listed her. Carson liked Leno.

NBC stuck by Coco, so Coco FORCED NBC to promise The Tonight Show & force Leno out by by threating to quit. Carson would have told Leno SAY NO, retire when you're ready. Leno was #1 then and #1 again. Ratings rule. Connan was fine for stoner's, not most of America. Carson & Leno came from working class families. Connan had a golden spoon & threatened quit AGAIN! They called his bluff.

Those are "direct quotes" from JL and CO (with souces). You say their sources aren't reliable? Could be; you don't know. The feeling commentary is based on these quotes. Inside Edition also reports hard news & politics. I've found they're more unbiased than real news networks. Clearly they also pander in sensational, salacious stories, but their reporting is conservative & reliable IMHO. They don't make it up like the NY Post or report innuendo as fact like Fox.

I watch little if any live TV any more, I record on my DVR or watch off the web. I might watch 10 min of an hour talk show, catch monologue, may be a bit, guest or band if good. The convenience of "on demand" viewing from the web is worth a few 30 sec commercials. In the day Johnny was it, no cable or satellite. Now we have up 4 shows going at a time from 11-2am, plus comedy centrals Jon Stewart and Colbert or Chelsea Handler. The future wide area wireless on-demand.

I think Conan should have just swallowed his pride and stayed with NBC. He kind of gave the finger to all his fans that don't have cable. He should have played it off like typical network re-scheduling, because that is all that it was. I don't see his new show lasting on TBS.

I agree. I was shocked he sent that unilateral FU NBC public letter / manifesto, do as I say or I quit. If he worked with Leno, my guess is Leno would have retired at the end of the contract, by then he might have the ratings? If NBC renewed his contract he could slide back. Give it a year or to the end of his contract. I doubt he had a show air-time clause. As much as I liked CoCo at 1230-0130, he just did not play well at 1030/1130. CoCo's humor was always about him.

Second, after more than 16 years working for a company, anyone would quit if they were treated like that. Think if your boss retired, and you took his place. Then he decided he wanted to come back so they just said to you too bad, go back to your old job.

Leno was named Carson's "permanent guest host" in 1987, and when Carson announced his retirement in 1991, NBC named Leno as his replacement. As far as people retiring and coming back, it happens, and I'M THE BOSS. Deal with it. Age doesn't matter but ratings do. The CoCo Show on basic cable TBS I predict will flop! Max is gone and 10/11 PM is too early, against local news, Daily-show, Night-line and reruns of hit sitcoms.
