The scarlet has been 'coming out' for the past 2 years! Either they've got serious design issues, or they've got no idea on time scales and lousy marketing! We had a hypothetical budget for this camera, but as they've taken so long to release it, we've invested that portion into SONY 35 instead. Sorry RED you missed this customer.

And I mean they totally changed direction after a year or two when video dslr's came around, when that nich was kind of filled they instead made scarlet in to a real professional motion picture camera.
I get that it sucks when you want it but it is understandable.

there is no scarlet this guy is walking around with a plastic shell, trying to scare the big boys like sony and them....why would u by the red one if u can shoot with the scarlet for so much cheaper.....

12K, yeah okay. 4K is enough for a big cinema screen, why the hell would anyone need 12K, so many people think high resolution equals amazing footage, it's just one aspect of it.
@kevbomb 4k is enough but the goal is not to be "enough" Red Cinema is going for beyond spectacular, and they are achieving it so far. And 4k is great for Cinema, but when you get into IMAX and 3d (which you can do with the scarlet when they come out) it's a whole new ball game. On Imax, 4k is equivilent to 720p.
@iigunzent 99.99% of the people buying scarlets won't be thinking or worrying about imax, that's big feature film stuff, they would just get an 'Epic'
@kevbomb one advantage to 12k is the amount of detail you can paint on it for matte paintings or compositing anything at that resolution. When down scaled it would be more seamless and harder to tell what is cgi. Depending on the skill behind it. It won't help you if you don't know what you're doing. Most computers can bearly handle 2k. Look at the BTS on Dark Knight. Unless you are the biggest studios constantly improving equipment we wont it that until 2 more years anyways. cheers.

@darkfox404 yeah in some of the interviews I've seen, the CEO of the company said that his goal is to be able to get to 12k by 2012. And with the build of the scarlet and Epic models, you should be able to just upgrade the sensors to 12k when they come out. As of right now with the epic, you can upgrade as much as you want without buying a whole new camera. You only buy the brain (sensor housing).

@kevbomb 4k is enough but the goal is not to be "enough" Red Cinema is going for beyond spectacular, and they are achieving it so far. And 4k is great for Cinema, but when you get into IMAX and 3d (which you can do with the scarlet when they come out) it's a whole new ball game. On Imax, 4k is equivilent to 720p.
