I recently started reading book and they further I get the more I understand these songs, but the thing is this song keeps playing in my mind, making me forget the story and leaving an image of feanor smahing Morgoth's face in with the hammer of grond.
They never play it live because the audience would spontaneously combust... this kind of epic can only be experienced indirectly by those who are unworthy.
the curse of feanor...such a deeply desperate and sad song, but also with adrenaline...that makes me thing about feanor's sense of guilt and excitement for the new path he choose, guardians forever:)
@AyabieLover20 The best track on this album that they don't do is Noldor. When I saw them, they did kickass jobs on Nightfall, Time Stands Still and their finale, Mirror Mirror.
No shred, no classical inspiration, and yet Blind Guardian manages to be as heavy, if not heavier, than any other metal band. No other band can take you to their realm as efficiently as these guys. When you listen to Nightfall, you ARE in Middle Earth.
@gringochucha While I really liked Night At The Opera, because I first got into BG with their Live album, I agree that a lot of the spirit went out with Twist In The Myth. However, hearing two of the tracks from their new album (from the Voice in the Dark CDS), I am hopeful that they have returned to good form. Voice in the Dark, and War of the Thrones harken back to Imaginations From the Other Side, at least to me. It actually sounds like the classic BG, instead of some new "take" on BG!
Take Frank Herbert (DUNE) for example...when Steve Harris asked his permission for Iron Maiden to release a song based on Dune, he said NO and the refusal came with a formal legal threat and a letter ""Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially rock bands like Iron Maiden."
Considering Tolkien was a devout Christian, the simple fact metal is sometimes associated with the devil would maybe prompt a refusal.
Just imagine Tolkien listening to this while writing some Silmarillion spin-off story, once in a while raising his old, bony fists into the air, headbanging o.O
@rogerpenna Just because someone's a christian doesn't mean they're narrow-minded. My mother's a devout christian and the other day I put on some Necrophagist and she found it really interesting.
@rogerpenna Just because someone's a christian doesn't mean they're narrow-minded. My mother's a devout christian and the other day I put on some Necrophagist and she found it really interesting.
@rogerpenna Absolutely not! At least in my opinion. Yes, Tolkien was a devout Christian, BUT at the same time I daresay he was very open minded. Just *imagine* the boldness it had to take to write female Goddesses into a mythical world of Arda - the six Valier - in his time. Then some of the Eldar - Galadriel or Lúthien, for example. And then *gasp* even some of the mortal women, like Haleth or Éowyn. In Arda women were free to choose their own destiny (to a degree, of course, [...cont...]
that was his fiction, based on old european myths. ANother thing is reality. Many catholic priests and monks do study and are fascinated by old mythology. That doesnt mean they arent devout catholics and separate strongly between fact (christian god) and fiction (mythology). Not that I think the christian god is a fact. THEY think god is a fact :)
Anyway, in the end, Iluvatar is like god, the arda and minor gods are angels, Morgoth is satan, the fallen angel.
@rogerpenna ... I'm not really sure what you're reacting to. =:) I can find other parallels with Bible. Fingolfin crossing Helcaraxë with the Noldor = Moses with the Israelites.
Only Tolkien disliked allegory with a passion, yet people are constantly trying to stuff it into his books. If he wanted to make Ilúvatar an ultimate God, he'd write the people of M-E to pray and/or sacrifice to him and otherwise worship him. The simple fact that he didn't speaks volumes in my eyes.
@jouzinka Unless you count the people of Numeanor who actually worshipped at the Temple of Eru once a year. It was during such a gathering, after it had been corrupted by Gorthaur the Cruel, that Eru utterly destroyed Numeanor and removed Valinor from the world, while making Ea round.
Besides the simple fact is that most of the people of middle earth haven't heard of Eru, instead men worship the different Valar as varying gods and powers of the earth.
@zappbrannigan420 Worship? Perhaps. But being aware of their powers and praying to them regularly, offering and sacrificing to them are two different things.
@jouzinka I have to wonder if you actually read the thing, Tolkien actually said: "And men have called them Gods..." implying that yes, men consider them divinities and have acted upon their worship foolishly, while those of Numeanor actually knew of Eru and worshiped him. Even Feanor took the oath that should not be taken by swearing it on Eru's name. The concept of the holiness of Eru is not an alien concept, and Manwe communicates with Eru silently many times, seeking his wisdom, ie, praying.
@zappbrannigan420 I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one. As I don't see communication = praying. Likewise calling someone Gods and worship them as such are two different things. The only instance which I can remember of actually praying to someone is Fingon praying to Manwë to guide his arrow to kill Maedhros when he was imprisoned on Thangorodrim. Also, nor Eru nor the Valar ever *demanded* to be worshipped, unlike the deities that we know from our world.
@zappbrannigan420 Manwë is praying to Eru? That's news to me too. At which part? I *do* remember reading that only Manwë knows (more like feels) the will of Eru, which would suggest a certain communication, at least one way. But I do not remember about reading Manwë praying to Eru.
@rogerpenna [...cont...] but Haleth was valiant and she openly lead her own people and never took a husband). That's a daring thought to conceive for a writer from the beginning of the 20th century, I'd say, so... if he knew BG, I'd say he'd at least consider their request. =:)))
Do they ever play this song live? I can't find any videos of them playing this one live. I am curious to see if he can hit these notes live, it is fucking high.
But he hits some pretty high notes on the 'Live' album, in Bright Eyes and Under The Ice, so he probably could. I've always heard that they don't do this one live because it so hard on the drummer, but I don't know how much truth there is in that.
I love this band and all there songs but i really am startin to regret it...they keep introducing books that i feel obligated to read after hearing the song for some "Strange" reason. On the upside, they are all Badass books.
The Silmarillion is the book they based this entire concept album off of. I'm trying to read it. I'm on about the 19th chapter right now. It's extremely good, but it's pretty hard to read. I liken it to the Old Testament of The Bible. (Another good book :p)
