In This Clip, From 0:00 To 1:53, It Was CBS Sports' College Football On CBS: Alabama Vs. Tennessee Video Open From Late Saturday Afternoon, October 26, 1996.
Hard to believe Peyton Manning was in college in the mid 90s! Also hard to believe Jim Nantz covered a Manning game in college, and then does it again all the time in the NFL.
Man these video hurt to watch. Not because of the wins and loss. What Tennessee use to be and what they are now just hurts plain and simple it just HURTS.
Peyton Manning and Tennessee beat everyone that year except...Florida. That was the only knock on him coming out of college obviously that was dispelled rather quickly until this year when Peyton lost his Super Bowl to the Saints.
Tennessee beat Alabama 20-13 and wound up with a 10-2 record, beating Northwestern in the Citrus Bowl. Bama also finished with a 10-2 record (their other loss was at Mississippi State) and beat Michigan in the Outback Bowl.
Alabama finished 10-3 that year with with losses to UT, Mississippi State (my uncle says he still has the taste of vomit in his mouth), and Florida in the SEC Championship game. Tennessee (I think) lost to Memphis in an upset..... This game was huge for Alabama. In 1995 UT traveled down to Legion Field and humilated us 41-14. It was one of the worse home losses in Bama history.
You know what, dmxwl2002, Everyone Is starting to get sick of listenin to dickheads like yourelf and all your sec bullshit....You Asses complain that USC gets in a title game with one loss....Well if your Alexander the Great SEC teams have two losses they get in...shut the fuck up....If Kentucky or Vanderbilt went undefeated you'd assume they're better than USC
college football is 100 times better than pro...every game means so much, which is why we should never have a playoff for the college football championship, because a team like USC could afford to lose a game like a stanford or Oregon State and still play in the playoffs. Stop Crying pete carroll, if you cant go undefeated in the weak pac-10, get out..and utah? cmon now, you couldnt beat a team like alababa 7 times in a season...aka an annual SEC schedule
I believe that Lane Kiffin will bring a new prospective to the Tennessee football program. With recruiting be the most crucial element in a winning program,Tennessee must be competive with the Florida and Alabama,in getting the athletes to produce a winning program..
If we beat Western Kentucky, that is. =P If we lose to Western Kentucky there will be some ticked off people... lol I doubt we will. We can't be worse that last year!
This was during that strange period when CBS did not have the NFL (which explains Jim Nantz working college ball) and used that funky orange and yellow based graphics package. I can't remember for football, but I think this was about the time they figured out that having the score on the screen all the time for NCAA hoops was the way to go. I'm not totally sure, but this also could have been the time that CBS had the Alliance bowl package that was a predecessor to the BCS (without the Rose Bowl)
the greatness of this game. Especially his "though the years with a young quaterback" actually Joe Namath's recent (and past) behavior would be better suited for Tennessee's Phillip Fullmer team since he can't seem to control his players. Seriously though I have nothing but respect for Joe Namath. I'd throw Fullmer under the bus, before Namath...he got his life together and finished his college degree which is more than most pro athletes.
It's amazing that back then CBS felt it had to sell the history to get a national audience to care. Nowadays everyone knows the SEC is the most competitive conference in the land, so the games practically sell themselves.
And I must say one of CBS's best decisions ever was keeping this classic theme when they resumed coverage of the sport in '96. After listening to some composer demos, I'd say they realized it was impossible for man to make better college football music.
c'mon now you honestly think the SEC was a crap conference in the mid '90s when this aired? Hell no, the CBS intro adds so much to the mystique the is the Southeastern Conference. I mean in the big ten it is only Michigan and OSU. Michigan will be back people enjoy kicking them but it won't last long then it will be the Big Two again. The SEC isn't two teams that's what exciting. If CBS did U-M/OSU games it would be awesome. I like Nantz's "through the years" to "last year" it gives the feel of
The SEC has deals with CBS, and what does the ACC get? Freaking Raycom Sports! The MWC doesn't get national coverage. You have to get a sports tier just to get the mtn.
If by MWC, you are talking about the Mountain West Conference, they had games on Versus last season, but I don't know of any other network that had them.
DAM, u gotta love wakein up on a crisp fall mornin, watchin college game day on ESPN, then switchin over to CBS to watch SEC football all day long... i love the theme song, gets me pumped.
I LOVE THIS INTRO. Every saturday everytime I hear that intro, I run (full speed) from my bedroom and plop down on the sofa in the den and watch SEC football on CBS. Doesn't get any better than that.

This music was originally commisoned by CBS as the theme music for Super Bowl XXV.
I'm surprised CBS didn't keep this music restricted to the NFL's Big Game; this theme music literally screams "Super Bowl!".
