Wow this is beautiful! I love the album version because of the accompaniment, but this is a great performance. Elvis' facial expressions during performance are always interesting.
This version is even more perfect than the recorded album version. This man is just... untouchable. I love how so many of his songs have the power to both break and mend your heart at the same time. He brings meaning to the word 'beauty.'
@PeglegZombie your comment perfectly sums up his music . have felt that way about it since I was 11 yo when I first heard his music and I'm 33 now :-)
Awesome, thank you SOOOOOO much for posting this. Used to have this on VHS as well and lost it. These performances are simply great, many even better than on the Spike CD. Thanks again!
I love the irony in this great song. The video reminds me of the gig at Pinkpop in 1989 where he gave a solo gig on his guitar. Impressive performance.
Thanks for the post....I never saw before a live version on that song....And I always loved the version on Spike.....But this is so much more intimate. And Like John Lennon was saying, a great song, is the one you can just play with one instrument and voice, and can touch you......Great performance, by Elvis Costello....
The first line he sounds exactly like Buddy Holly, it's freaky! I really like when he says that he confuses God with Santa Claus, it's the big white beard I suppose :b Elvis Costello is so cool !
It really is a great and different song. Love the camera work here at the beginning where the light shade sort of mosies up the screen and it pans in.
Post the whole tape PLEASE ! The whole "Spike" album is amazing , as is "Brutal Youth", & "All This Useless Beauty" . My favorite Elvis phase , by far.

This is the most brilliant song ever written in the English language. I've seen him twelve times and he's never once played it. Le sigh.

Aw, seems he likes that one to me. I hope he does a rock tour again. :D The Imposters should do this. :D

He did a live version where he told a story in the middle of the song.....I'd pay a pretty penny for that.
Good stuff.
Why's he not coming to Boston on the Summer 2009 tour?

Simply the very best pop songwriter in the 30 years between Paul McCartney and Elliot Smith. Also, his voice sounds wonderful on this clip.
