  • No discussion of his overtly implied atheism? Are you scared? Are you scared?

  • this is such a gem! thanks so much!!! love this song, and this minimalist version does great justice to his words, phrasing, musicianship

  • Great version of this song (even if he does muff the very last guitar note!)

  • Acoustic joy!

  • This version is even more perfect than the recorded album version. This man is just... untouchable. I love how so many of his songs have the power to both break and mend your heart at the same time. He brings meaning to the word 'beauty.'

  • @PeglegZombie your comment perfectly sums up his music . have felt that way about it since I was 11 yo when I first heard his music and I'm 33 now :-)

  • fantastic post!!!....i LOVE this man's work...only problem with this,is now i need to see MORE!!

  • OMG! What a blast!

  • I'm scared.

  • I'm scared.

  • From his album spike, his best album

  • Thank you very much.

    x.

  • Elvis is a cool guy.

  • I'm so glad to find this version here! Thanks.

  • Funny & sad song.

  • I think he sounds better in this video than on the album.

  • Thanks for the post...looking for this for yrs.

  • he is fantstic, unbelievable lyric and melody combinations... not many can pull of that kind of word play.

  • Awesome, thank you SOOOOOO much for posting this. Used to have this on VHS as well and lost it. These performances are simply great, many even better than on the Spike CD. Thanks again!

  • it's great but he's better with a brass band

  • can't explain the wonderfulfullnesss of this video

  • I love the irony in this great song. The video reminds me of the gig at Pinkpop in 1989 where he gave a solo gig on his guitar. Impressive performance.

  • Too bad no xylophone, I liked that from the album version. Thanks for a cool post though.

  • Elvis is the King.

  • this guy is just in a class by himself...most original style.

  • OLD times ..

  • Dear Champipple , Luv your S&S sn & ur taste in music

  • This is the most brilliant song ever written in the English language. I've seen him twelve times and he's never once played it. Le sigh.

  • Just came back from seeing him play this live - bloody marvelous :)

  • Aw, seems he likes that one to me. I hope he does a rock tour again. :D The Imposters should do this. :D

  • He did a live version where he told a story in the middle of the song.....I'd pay a pretty penny for that.

    Good stuff.

Why's he not coming to Boston on the Summer 2009 tour?

  • this is genious

  • one man , one guitar , one fucking great song . the best

  • Thanks for the post....I never saw before a live version on that song....And I always loved the version on Spike.....But this is so much more intimate. And Like John Lennon was saying, a great song, is the one you can just play with one instrument and voice, and can touch you......Great performance, by Elvis Costello....

  • A song to concider for funeral or cremation.Reincarnation is kept in the middle. This song is a fairytale about death and whats beyond.

  • Out of curiosity, what do you mean by reincarnation is kept in the middle?

  • The first line he sounds exactly like Buddy Holly, it's freaky! I really like when he says that he confuses God with Santa Claus, it's the big white beard I suppose :b Elvis Costello is so cool !

  • Simply the very best pop songwriter in the 30 years between Paul McCartney and Elliot Smith. Also, his voice sounds wonderful on this clip.

  • This song is amazing.

  • I walked right past Mr. Costello in Toronto, Ontario and was so surprised to see him that I didn't take the opportunity to thank him for this song.

  • I love it when he plays alone with a guitar, it really proves that his song are extraordinary good songs.

  • The greatest artist of all time his songs are beautiful. Pictures are pleasant to the eyes and his music is pleasant to the ears.

  • Love this song, the whole album is genious!

Glad you found your tape and shared it with us :-)

  • 101st trip on pot,so beatles,where is the tash!!>>>

  • studio version carries most amazing harmonies at the chorus

  • Thank you for this... I love you.

  • love this song, pne of the best on spike, but why does he always look sad when he preforms, it odd

  • It's like method singing...he really gets into character.

  • Brilliant, never thought i would see this again, ever.

    Thanks.

  • Superb!

  • very good work Elvis!

  • greatest popular songwriter of the 20th century. fucking brilliant!

  • How can someone be so good?

  • How can someone be so good can you tell me?

  • He wrote this one in Greenland. Guess Greenland would help anyone concentrate.LOL

  • It really is a great and different song. Love the camera work here at the beginning where the light shade sort of mosies up the screen and it pans in.

  • How can someone be so good can you tell me?

  • can you put up that whole tape soon!?

    thanks.

  • will do asap - having technical issues, will try to sort this weekend.

  • How can someone be so good can you tell me iamascarydinosaur?

  • craig cardiff does a great version of this song.

  • Now we want the rest of the vhs, please.

  • I can't believe more people haven't viewed this. It's timeless, beautiful and soul aching...

  • This is great!

  • ...they say that travel broadens the mind, til you can't get your head out of doors.
