Chris Broderick came up with a really good solution, a clip that keeps the pick in the thumb, leaving the rest of the fingers free for tapping (not a thumb pick, a clip that can be attached to any pick).

Bumblefoot plays just holding the pick and tapping with his middle and ring fingers while keeping a thimble on the pinkie to hit notes off the neck. Buckethead made a living sliding the pick between his thumb and palm to tap with all four fingers before sliding it back into picking position. Chris Broderick eliminated that extra step by anchoring the pick onto his thumb. Or you can be like Stanley Jordan and have no pick at all. All great tappers.

@MrChristophSchmidt he's great but I haven't seen anything like Stanley Jordan in my life! Not only does he use 8 finger-tapping, he also plays the piano very well and yes, in his Paris 2008 concert he regularly switches between accompanying himself on piano whilst playing a solo on guitar and vice versa as well as just guitar and just piano. It's only a matter of time untill he can play bass with his feet and drums with his cock or something. The guy is an absolute legend!

to whoever asked the question, I store the pick in my middle finger as well, (so does EVH) i would suggest that you look up some of his tapping techniques, Guthrie is amazing but sounds like his style of tapping (altho brilliant and works for him amazingly,) may not be the best way for everyone or the style of music that you play.

Chris Broderik uses a pick that has a thing were you can put your thumbnail in it, I surely am going to buy that shit, you can do 8 finger tap and then quickly return to play, your pick doesn't fall, you can play as if you were with no pick, it's a great solution!

@TMetalFromHell I've got one of those... but what it does is restrict your freedom of movement around the pick. Its hard to adjust the pick for pinch harmonics and sweep picking because its sorta locked into place.

you can use a pick clip which clips the pick to your thumb so you can do 8 finger tapping fairly easily and switch back to regular picking with very little effort
