I'm also in college. I'd highly recommend picking up at least a Bachelor's in English as you can then travel the world sailing and make port in various cities and teach as you go. I am saving up for a boat myself and I intend on sailing around the world a few times!
Thanks lads for posting a video which makes these dark nights without any sailing feel a bit better! One day me and the wife are going to cross the Atlantic and come to America the way it should be done!

@unisailor Wouldn't it suck to plan a trip like this only to find that your crew/friends weren't up for it? Or that they became assholes under pressure? These guys seem to mesh really well!
Hi- just kind of curious why they didn't keep a spare radio wrapped in watertight material? Last time I checked the first rule of sailing is "Everything that is not wet is damp" no mater what you do!
Yes, because tiller watch sucks- I've done it a few times, and the thought of holding that damn'd tiller in all weather SUCKS! Cold, ice, roasting in the sun? Nope,,,no fun at all
LOL - I"m obsessed with watching the clipper round the world yacht race through their website - now that really is sailing! The diaries and video's really make me want to be there
I thought it was interesting you all were motoring out of washington and the seas appeared very calm not typical of washington from what ive seen. Also comical when everyone commented on the pasta, but when he offered seconds the replay was oh noooo.... :) what a great trip I envy you guys.
Man, that's what we all want to be again, 18 and that is very far off when you are 48! You just can do such a journey when you put all your power to it, nothing to loose!
@XvDarkArcanavX "It sucks being 18"... LOL! What sucks is being 53 and not having sailed across any oceans! You're not that far off your dream.
You'll do it. Save and plan. You can be out on your own boat within a few years. The wife and I started less than a years ago. Through hard work we are now on our second boat and loving it. Nothing you can't do, too!
@XvDarkArcanavX There are two 16 year old girls sailing around the world alone! And they're not alone as in it's just the two of them, I mean each one is separately doing it. One is Australian Jessica Watson, the other is American Abby Sunderland. Both fascinating stories and both are still out. Jessica is nearly finished and back in Australian waters, Abby is near S. Africa. They both collected up sponsors for help pay for it, Jessica's boat is borrowed even! You can do it! Check them out :)
@DeOptimist I also am 18, sharing the dream of a life sailing, yet I am stuck for another 3.5 years in school. Have any plans to enter the world of sailing? And DarkArcana, now that you are 20, have you done any major sailing yet?
@XvDarkArcanavX i'm 18 and i sail most weekends... my cousins sailed the sydney to hobart race on super maxis a few weeks after they finished school. Get out there and into it!
@XvDarkArcanavX I know the feeling, but at least you have all that ahead of you. Would be harder if you got the idea to sailaround the wrodl when youre 70 ;)
A truly inspirational video. It was due to videos like this which inspired me to start sailing. Excellent work and thank you to you all for my new way of life.
The paddle is for the wind vane. The wind hits the paddle which in turn, moves the rudder in the water and corrects your course to the wind direction. That's the simplified version anyway.
Excellent video. My friend and I are sailing our Newport 41 down to the South Pacific and I want to make a video diary like this. I wish there was more out there!
That would have come in handy being that we lost out radio 2 days into our sail. We had a water maker--Cap'n discusses it in one of the clip Passage 1 - Passage 4
Great Video. I would like to share info with the skipper.I also have a Tayana 37 and would like to ask some questions on the boats performance. How would I contact same?

so when its nighttime, do you have a night person who keeps the boat going or you lower the sails and put out some kind of anchor? or just drift?

not a lot of women would agree to a sail like that? 37 days without shopping and soap operas in telly? there would be a bloody mutiny on the boat.
