I don't think this is correct. Cop is short for copper. In the 1800's a deputy would be issued a copper badge. It became a vulgar term used. "you're nothing but a copper." Meaning they were not the sheriff. Then shortened to cop.

The word cop DOES come from the copper badges the cops started wearing in the mid 1800's in America when law enforcement was organized. Where she comes up with that other answer as being correct is beyond me. Back in the day, police officers didn't have a highly distinguishable uniform like today and were identified by their copper badges. Hence the name "cop".
