I always enjoy watching application of Tai Chi. I don't see it very often, and it's so much more... flowing... than the "hard style" of karate that I train.
Yes, this is the best tai chi application video that I have ever seen, and the best tai chi player that I have seen on video except for Cheng Man-ch'ing.
Thank you for posting. One of the best application vids on YouTube. Btw have you ever noticed how everyone who practices this art ends up with the same groups of muscles being developed, and that these muscle groups, especially on the arms and legs, are the striking surfaces of the limbs or protect vulnerable areas of the limbs? Amazing physical, mental, and martial discipline. And that is just when you begin. I have a feeling that the spiritual rewards are just as remarkable.
in my opinion chen man ching's yang tai qi is a yin art and should be yielding in other words no pushes or aggressive movements and blocks should be done with just enough pressure for the stuff to be blocked... these applications are more kung fu then chen man chings yang tai chi read his book and pay attention to principles then the applications are there without aggression... yield yield yield, again i say your applications are good for kung fu but not tai qi quan
@bobogazungaaa real tai chi is a study of the mind and body together, the applications are used to help you free your mind from getting blocked, all the force comes from mind and than generated from the waist, don,t get confused tai chi is a spiritual art,the martial is the side affect, tai chi has to have soft and hard involved, other words you have to understand this it cannot be read in a book, only a real teacher can show the way, through direct transmission.just contact no blocks ever in tai chi.
To be fair, I'm pretty ill-educated in such matters, but I was told that Kung FU (esp tai Chi - in this case - and Wing Chun) don't recommend kicking above the knee, then why was he practising head kicks?
@johnboyleeds well it actually depends on situation. taiji teaches one to be flexible and adaptable. if situation allows, and if u're confident of being accurate, high kicks can be used
The movements are good, but the "attacks" are really bad. There's nothing more simple than to push a tall, skinny guy around! I would like to see that with a heavy person. Also it would conritbute to the credibility of a demonstration if the attacker wouldn't behave like a dummy - don't just leave the non "attacking " arm just dangling, around!
Even better show a kind of sparring where you apply the stuff freely, without telling the guy first how to attack.
Great video brother. We teach the Cheng Man-ch'ing form at our school. You should put together an application dvd; you could make some good money. I enjoy watching Yang Jwing Ming's videos and others, but it is nice to see the techniques that originate from the form we teach. You had some variations on the applications that I had never thought of. Thanks for the upload!
the "other guy" is me, and I wasn't contributing any force or artifice to the demonstration except to keep my joints in the socket. However far I fly in the video is how far he pushed me.
some nice apps Iquite like the Lotus leg kick . He knows his system. I think the other guys spoils it by jumping about and flying about like a wally. Keep it real man, Tai Chi works on big guys too. Try me ill be happy not to fly around. Decent Tai Chi though> cheers
We think we found a video of Huang Sheng Shyan doing the entire form which we posted on my page. Could you or your Teacher look at it, and confirm if you think this is Huang Sheng Shyan. Thanks.
hmm this guy has a good undersanding and applications are excellent. Nice to see good Taiji. Great vid this will help others who dont understand Taiji is first and formost a martial art.
Many of these applications are done in the same way I think of them when I practice my Yang form. Nice to get some closure to my thoughts. That shoulder works particularly well in push hands.
Thanks a lot! Whoever the teacher his, he nicely shows after each push from which part of the form it was derived. When doing the form, some parts make it hard to imagine how a particular move could be meant to deflect an attack or the like. Cheng Man Ching´s books, especially the ealier instructions, are always written with regards to an incoming attack. This teacher really gives a session in the spirit of early Cheng Man Ching. And it shows!
Thank you very much. I learned this form years ago. The school broke up before I could learn any applications. I still practice the form and now I can make some real sense of it.
very nice work in applications, thank you for posting. It is great to see the practical aspect of Master Cheng's teaching demonstrated so well. Too many people have come to believe that Master Cheng's teaching was diluted while in fact it was very powerful and true to the roots of the art (as well being a means of attaining personal excellence)
Are those the only applications for the tools which we call form and posture? if not, then what was the point of the demonstration other than being something that "looks cool"
Those are not the only applications. Many of the postures have a variety of applications. I posted this video because I know many people unfamiliar with Tai Chi, even here in Taiwan, think it is not a martial art. I hope this video can dissuade them from that point of view.

Every one of these moves is from Cheng Man-Ching's Yang Tai Chi form.
Tai Chi is a more than just an exercise for old people.

So that's what Brush Knee and Push is for.
Wow... that's pretty impressive, kind of depressing to think that it'll take years and years of practice to even get close to that point.

What about when he meets my ancient death foot of smell technique that collapses his lungs?
Unless he has metal lungs he is screwed!
I stink at fighting so I stink up the fighting to compensate!
Or have I just put you all-in with an 8 - 7 off-suit with my hustler tactics?
