  • The formula for energy stored in a capacitor

    E=.5CV^2

    Then by algebra one can solve for the capacitance:

    38J=C(250V)^2

    C=349uF

  • excuse me good sir.... but does every rail-gun produce a plasma??.... because of the electro magnetic field?

  • @marek0086 the plasma is mostly created by the high voltage connected to a short circuit

  • Why don't you use steel nails instead of aluminum foil??

  • @karatefreak97 because only non-magnetic metals work

  • It's µF. µ means micro.

  • aha... but the real question is can it kill a zombie !?

  • @theEverchild no because zombies are death

  • at :46 it looks like a repulsor blast.

  • yeah because y is near u on the keyboard. He might just pressed a wrong button

  • LOL It`s Misaka !!! Biri Biri !!!!

  • @LunaxxxYui

    whaha i started watchig these vids cause of her... her railgun coins go a bit slower then this touch haha

  • dude, nice pics!! how much did it cost to make this very tiny rail gun?

  • kràss_leÜtë_sÜcht_mAl_ñÄch:_olikohle_äUf_gÒÖglê_vòll_gèÏl

  • Can you kill an Informer with it? lol

  • @ TurkishGamer92 your 9v is only ever going to put out a few watts at best, you'll need hundreds of them to get hundreds if watts, I think the voltage output of my circuit has something to do with the transformer and the transistor as well so you should try do some research to see what transistor can handle the current load as a 9v will destroy my circuit. Why not just go simple with my circuit and put their outputs in parallel, the more there are the higher the current (and Watt/Power rating)

  • watch ' how to make a 400v charging circuit ' to learn how to make a circuit from scratch capable of charging photo flash capacitors, you need little electronics knowledge and you only need four components and a 1.5v battery.

  • Am I supposed to believe that?

  • @cakemaster10 it looks amazing doesn't it, that is just vapourised aluminium it is really good but it isn't a 'game style' railgun, it has little killing potential (apart from the capacitor charge lethality)

  • Lol, I built one with nearly 3000J... that's over 150 times more powerful than this!

    Very nice work here though, it had good integrity. You should block off the back end to give it higher pressure though, that will immediately increase the muzzle velocity.

  • @FiremanTyme lol, well you don't seem to understand how these things work.

  • impressive

  • How do figure out the amount of joules?

  • Comment removed

  • can you make one that can down the common housefly???, that would be like building the better mousetrap

  • Did it actually shoot the aluminum foil ball, or just vaporize it?

  • Hey, I have some questions, i will be very thankful to you if you reply..

    1. What is the minimum voltage and uf required for the capacitors? because i may not be able to get capacitors of 330v and 120uf.

    2. How to charge these capacitors? because i dont have that charger thing like you have. so how should i charge the capacitors and for how long?

    3. Do we have to charge these capacitors after every shot? and for how long we should charge them?

    PLEASE REPLY SOON. Thank You

  • @bigbang308 you can get capacitors from disposable cameras and charging circuts also from disposable cameras, the circuts from the cameras have an led that comes on when its thru charging

  • @bigbang308

    2. You can charge the capacitors by holding the (+) of the battery to the one end, and the (-) of the battery to the other end of the capacitor. Be careful, 5 Seconds after starting to charge the capacitor gives the capacitor a strong enough energy to shock you. They can even kill you, if they are fully charged. You discharge them by connecting the ends of the capacitors to each other, or discharge them slowly by using a resistor. I would not do discharge them with my fingers.

  • @TurkishGamer92 the voltage must be high enough to supply the capacitor with sufficient power though, if your capacitor is rated at 9v then you can charge it with a 9v battery, but many useful power capacitors are rated at many hundreds of volts so you need to boost voltage up to the rating of the capacitor.

  • @ConnorXV Hey thanks for the add. I am looking for a possiblity to boost up my 9V battery up to some hundreds of Watts, can you help me? I might also be using two of the batterys (18V)

  • I think the aluminum foil should be replaced with a needle.... or a nail.

  • were did you get the devices you used to charge the capacitors

  • Nice Sandals

  • Nice flipflops.

  • love the pics D.

  • It's just plain Voodoo!!! ( wink,wink )

  • You need to have an injector system for your rail gun to work bigger.

  • how powerfull is it? make a bigger version with actuall bullets and tell me the fps

  • if 80v can give you a bad shock try it with 200v which happend to me with a coil gun.it shocked my pinky :(

  • you cant really show something in slo mo when yur camera only gets 3 frames of it

  • how does a railgun work? is manetism like a coil gun or is it purely charges? i dont rlly know, just guessing

  • Can you kill a Transformer with it?

  • @Videogametourist maybe that you can kill the little one that fucks Megan Fox leg :D

  • @Videogametourist

    Yes!! He lied about the aluminum foil. It was actually a small shard of the AllSpark. XD

  • So the Foil isn't flashing itself?

  • I know it cuts down on efficiency significantly, but let's just leave some dissapation into plasma for the sheer badassness of it.

  • Are those 120 yotafarad capacitors, or 120 microfarad capacitors? Sorry, your info sort of throws me off with the "y". XD

  • @JackMeough666 It should be u (Micro) Farads, at least that's what the disposable cameras use.

  • @JackMeough666 I would fucking hope it's not yottafarads. That would be an insane charge.

  • @DrexelDragonO91 lmao the capacitors would be the size of a skyscraper.

  • @JackMeough666 Precisely, which leads into my next question: How did you get confused by the "y" again?

  • @JackMeough666 it's yottafarad, he will blow the entire solar system!

  • @JackMeough666

    I think it is uF.............

  • @JackMeough666 The small y would actually be 'yokto' and not 'yotta' :D

    A yottafarad capacitor would be kinda awesome, though. Especially at that size.

  • @JackMeough666 you mean yottafarad? are you nuts? they don't even make any capacitors that big and likely not for a long time. you seriously thinking that mean meant yottafarad makes me really feel sorry for you, seriously.

  • @flamedrag18 You didn't even bother to read. He is questioning the use of the "y", which could be micro or "yocto". A yotta does have a capital Y, though.

  • @JackMeough666 i believe he meant "uF" XD

  • funny what some people build in thier kitchen^^

  • So does this shoot melted particularized metal?

  • how do u count out the jouls?

  • @szuszi2 W = C U²/2

  • I think you have to have some other metal than Al to shoot from a rail gun.

  • I think it is just set up as a demonstrational peice. If that is the case the aluminum actually works pretty well because it the aluminum is pretty much vaporazied by it so you dont have to really worry about it hitting any thing. Not that it would really damage much with such a low amount of power any way but still.

  • Looks After Effects'd

    If it does work, though, Pre-charged energy cells would be needed along with the ammo to make this a conceivable weapons system, so I don't think infantry will have use for a railgun in the near future.

  • i can tell by the pixels

  • 120 yocto farads is 0.00000000000000000120 farads

  • Willst du eine Kaskade verwenden? Dann laden deine Kondensatoren um ein vielfaches.

  • hast recht hab ich auch gemacht

  • very nice! Try to increase the voltage.

  • 360 yocto farads!

  • you should make a bigger one :P one that travels at like amaizing velocities and can penetrate like inch thick steel lol.... Nice job though :)

  • Nice sandals !!!!

  • Geocities link broken FYI.

  • Rails are made of what material? And than they are clamped from two parties? Plexiglas? Please, answer. Sorry, I can't use subtitles in mini Railgun Assembly video.

  • Great job on your project. But don't give subspace4d any credit as it was my video and project that he reposted that you viewed and got ideas from. Just look at my uploads and you can see. Otherwise, yours looks much more refined and you did very well.

  • I know HOW a railgun works, I just want to know what you used to charge it...

    thanx

  • I used an single-use-camera flash circuit. powered by a simple 1.5V AA battery.

  • It's amaxing how a gun with a simple construction can shoot a projectile that fast. I'm building one right now and I hope it will be as good as yours

  • ;o) do it!

    it's very funny.

    if you need help, ask me.

  • Thanks a lot mate. I'll ask a question now:

    Did you ever accidently touch the rails when the capacitor bank is charged, I think high voltage products are kind of scary ;)

  • I've got another question too:

    Many people doubt that this really is plasma, so is it real plasma?

  • 1) there not as simple as one would think(i have one im making a video)

    2) as long as you dont let it ark across your heart youll live

    3)yes it is REAL PLASMA :)

    and now a question for diseliprojects: how dose one calculate "J"?

  • But it's a kind of simple contruction if you have the charging circuit, and it's easy to get the parts needed

  • simple construction but when you want to know how it works the answer isnt so clear is it the U shaped wire or the lorrenz force?

  • @LazorLad

    what did you mean with U shape wire?

  • each wire acts as a magnet and when the projectile is inbetween also acts like a magnet and all three magnets have the same poles facing each other so they push away from eachother but nevermind im pretty shure its lorentz force

  • You are right. The left and the right rail produce a magnetic field. The third magnet will be the projectile. Because the current flows also thru the projectile. If the projectile movable, it will be accelerated. (movable short)

  • Well, the calculation of J is the following:

    I used 7 photo capasitors with each 120 yF at 330V.

    U = 330V

    C = 120yF x 7 = 840yF

    yF -> F is 1/1'000'000

    C = 0.00084F

    E= (1/2) x C * U * U

    E= 45.738J

    E= 0.045738kJ

    I hope I didn't make a mistake. :o)

  • oh and if i made my projectile out of bismuth would i get better results?

  • wait so

    U= voltage

    C= capacitance x # of caps

    micro farad = one milionth of a farad

    C= 1/1,000,000 total uF

    E= 0.5 x totalcapacitance (in F) x voltage x voltage

    E= J

    E/1,000 = kJ

    right?

  • right!

  • I think bismuth is the wrong material to get a better result. You need a material with low electric resistance. Aluminium, copper, silver and gold should be better. ;o) Less resistance produce a higher magnetic field.

  • we just shoot with gold :)

  • @diseliprojects Yeah cause a railgun that shot gold bars would be real practical.

  • @diseliprojects Pure iron pellets work great :) And, sparks only come from plasma generated since the alu-foil is thin and is relatively easy to melt.. I don't know if you actually could shoot anything with it, 'cause I'd think that the whole alu-pellet is molten in the process, making only shiny sparks but nothing else.. or? :P

  • thanks so the cap bank im getting is... ...hang on... ....972J... nice

  • Energy in Joules = Capacitance * Voltage ^ 2

    E = C*V^2

    E = (360/1000000)*330*330

    E = 39 J Max. Not 972J

  • this is cool ill make one with a friend and post it aswell

  • do it! it makes a lot of fun.

  • What material is that clear thing?

    Plastic?

    lucite?

    and how do you reload the gun?

  • Sorry for my delayed answer.

    I used lucite (4mm) for the clear thing.

    The material of the rails is aluminium.

    In a few days Ill make a new video.

    This video shows you how I assemble the device.

    And Ill show you how I reload it.

  • How long does it take to charge?

  • It takes approximately 3 minutes.

  • nice

  • Thanks

  • Nice pictures

  • Thx
