@soccer13soccer , thanks for your comment. The purpose of this drill is demonstrate how the "reverse forehand" is a VERTICAL stroke. I do appreciate your feedback, please let me know if I can answer any of your questions.
@topspintennis Ok just make sure to mention that because it can really injure your arm. I used to do it that way thinking it was correct until my coach told me not to unless im using it for a defensive shot and to swing threw but let the racquet come up
@trentman, it's important to be "mindful" of the reverse forehand. You are correct that the natural swing path is more vertical, especially when the ball is late. Thanks for your comment.
@trentman It's probably one of the easiest ways to learn topspin. The vertical nature of the stroke creates good topspin and teaches "feel." Thanks for your question.
I started doing this years ago in hitting sessions with a friend and we would also hit backhands this way. We developed tremendous spin and net clearance. It really evolved my my strokes and raised my level of play.
Take a look at my videos playing ambidextrous with 2 rackets. On youtube, type in "ambidextennis"
Yes, since his technic is horrible. I think he's making it on purpose to show how to get the feel for the contact point and the timing before performing an actual forehand.
Anyway, when you are at the point you need to learn this shot, it means that you have already have a decent forehand drive and top spin forehand- both classical and windshield wiper. You should actually be good enough to get it right away and it is always better to teach a full motion - it avoids robotic swings.
most of the shots that look like this "reverse forehand" are usually when players are out of position and cannot do their regular stroke, I don't think it would be an effective stroke
That is not Nadal's forehand! If you search nadal forehand slow motion, you will see how nadal finishes his stroke in front of him and brings the racquet back over behind his head which is why he still has power in his shot and not that lob kind of shot. Same goes for maria sharapova and sampras.
There's hardly any upper body motion, during a match that ball would be a moon-ball, all topsin and no pace or depth.
Copying your technique could result in an injury, better the imitate Nadal's over the head finish at least to effectively decelerate the racket (combined with upper body rotation to get racket-head speed).
Thanks for your response. You are correct with the limited upper body movement. This happens because the racquet will follow through on the same side of the body. The upside to this stroke is the "extreme" topspin and "heaviness" of the shot. I am only hitting at about 25% in this video which makes the shot look like a "moon ball." The only way there could be an injury is by using the incorrect grip our inproper follow through. Thanks for your response!
You are supposed to whip that like a lasso over your head, not yanking it all around like that... the more improper tendencies you bring into a player, the lesser they will be able to play their shots later on. You should worry about having them hit complete swings instead of half motions.
And, you do not teach a reverse forehand to a player who cannot already a windshield wiper correctly... start with a simple swing, but make it a fundamentally sound swing!
Actually, most pros hit this shot when they are taken out wide or if they are pushed backed deep in the court. Nadal and Sharapova use this shot a lot to "counter punch" or to buy themselves more time on a shot. When they move forward, they usually finish their strokes across their bodies and over their opposite shoulder. Thanks for your comment!
this is a shot ive been using since i first saw nadal use it.
actually watch the players not the ball during a match. this is a very defensive shot but because the ball bounces at shoulder level it is difficult to handle.
a lob? no only if you have terrible ball striking skills and cant do a proper high bouncing topspin shot.

why do you need to teach people this? isn't it sort of a natural physical reaction when you're late on the ball?

@panicyupp, Roger, that's exactly why we teach this shot. It's a great way to learn TOPSPIN. I will look at your video. Thanks for the comment!

that is definetly not nadals forehand. If you look closely the ball goes very high like in a lob. This guy does not know about tennis

that motion does not look good at all,it does with nadal but i thin thats about it
Jamie4Sharapova 3 years ago
The difference is though, Nadal gets huge extension through the ball while still finishing over his left shoulder.

Isn't the follow through supposed to be in front and over the head? The technique on the way you hit the forehand is highly questionable...
Babolat3216 3 years ago
yeah supposed to go around your head not directly over the same shoulder, unless your on the run and/or really out of position

oh I see...
Just wondering about how you hit it though, it looks like your lobbing the ball from the service line, is that how the pros do it?
marth1990 3 years ago
you only do that shot if your running toward the ball, and ur shot looks like it goes too high and not enough hip action

so is this a lob? =="
from what i know nadal nor sharapova use their forearms to generate pace/spin....
n judging from the angle the ball is leaving ur racket its gonna land near the service line....
