Use to attend the faires back in the late 80's and my friends and I really enjoyed them. By the early 90's the faires were sabotaged by the costume nazi's, SCA and pirates. Has not been the same since. This is is so funny and yet SO true. LOL!
My family and I have been attending the PA Renaissance Faire since 2004 (the fair's been around since the 80's by the way) and we enjoy going to it not for the so-called "authenticity" but for the entertainment value.
The jousting tournament, the stage shows, visiting the weapons stores and sampling the steak on a stake and turkey legs are some of my favorite things about Ren Faires
Heh, I'm with ya. Diet Cola and light beer were not okay back then. Of course, they really aren't now either, but that is beside the point. And pirates are fast becoming as overdone as vampires.
FYI ... just real quick ... Turkeys were imported from England to the US. The turkeys were all killed off and eaten in England and re-imported BACK to England.
Wow, you must have found the smallest cheapest renaissance faire possible. Now considering that most Renaissance faires are based in the English Renaissance that makes them somewhere around the Elizabethan Era (during the beginnings of the kilt, the bring of turkeys to England) though pirates almost certainly have never ever dressed like that
@basseth23 Actually, this song was inspired by an event like Bristol (soda pop stands and t-shirt carts everywhere) ;-) Some events can't take teasing, though.
@allenhuffman *Sigh* Sad but true. I've worked at Bristol and corporate drives us nuts with the stuff they want us to do. They keep pushing the fantasy/mainstream craze stuff. (And yes, we were pirate/nautical themed a few years ago) We used to joke that they were going to have centaurs and unicorns soon...and then corporate told us how next year we were going to have a unicorn...
bonjour , vous voulez une technique simple et rapide et très efficace pour obtenir un mot de passe msn ?? Si oui venez sur ma chaine et regardez ma vidéo !!
i especially like the SCA and the Combat Reinactment groups that are often found at the faires. At least they take the time to be able to show what the weapons are, how they are used, or how the SCA has a lot of Craftsmen, blacksmiths, leather workers, wood workers at the KCRF, and many of the bigger faries that spend their day like they would back then, only stopping to explain what they are doing, answer questions. I agree though it needs to be more about the history not about the merchandise!
aw I love the song..it is true..I didn't know they had pepsi and cola and now aday foods..hehe..I like the video..cool....is there a real Renaissance festival that really takes us back with what they had in there days? that would be so wild to go and see what they ate drank and music with out the mini mall...heheh..
As a fun sidebar --"Yes, they were called privateers back then" -- techinally, not even that. privateer dates back to 1664, originally private man of war (1646), from private, probably modeled on volunteer, buccaneer. Though "piracy" exsisted pre-1600, and the idea of "privateering" exsisted pre-1600 -- not the word -- which makes young lady's ironic voice over comments that much more ironic. Thanks again for posting the video.
I am living history person, mostly focusing on Elizabethan period. I, unfortunately, know what to expect from "renaissance faires" and have used them as venue for presenting "history" to those attending who were actually attending to see something "historical". I believe I've written this song in my head a million times -- thanks for actually putting those words to a tune :) I think my favorite scene is at 1:26 -- the image of the fellow in a kilt, playing banjo, says it all for me. -Steven
Thanks for taking time to comment. The song was written years before we ever recorded it, and it was inspired by a huge corporate event (that's been running 30 or so years) in the Midwest. After years of making fun of 1700s Hollywood pirates at festivals, we gave in an started a comedy show having fun with the whole idea.
RPFS in the early days had alot of renaissance period teaching and learning. Now since it is owned by a corporation.. It is more about entertainment less about teaching period things.
I believe entertainment can be taught in an entertaining way, and I do occasionally see that being done at festivals in my area (there's a great "history of makeup" presentation a local group does), but it's rare. There are plenty of historically accurate bawdy songs that were time period correct, yet few performers seem to know about them and instead they do 1800s folk songs ;-) I've heard Civil War songs and I'm sure we've all heard the 1980s "The Scotsman" song at faire.
scense the hurrican the faire grounds have been looking better you can sit at the joust now so nice^^ I hope the pirate faire get's better..but then again it was it's first year
The event out at Scary Acres since 2008 is a completely different show by a completely different organizer. They have done so many great things to the site in the past two years (including planting trees this year) that it is much nicer than any of the Nebraska Renaissance Faire events held there. The Midlands Pirate Festival, in the Fall at another location, was one of the funnest things I did last year. I'll have to do some video of it this year.
Thank you. The song was actually inspired by some of the large corporate events in the MIdwest, but I think it applies at pretty much all of the festivals I have been to...
Unfortunately, I do not think I still have the master for this video, but as some point I will probably revise it using updated footage. I'm actually wanting to go to the original event that inspired this song and use footage from it ;-) (Pirate Comedy Show podcast and CD created the fictitious "Grandscale Renaissance Festival & Fantasy Faire" in tribute.)
For the most part, never. The look we see is a creation of Hollywood pirate movies, and the whole way pirates are expected to "talk" is generally traced back to a particular pirate movie (Blackbeard? I forget.) and most people wouldn't recognize someone as a pirate without the big boots and such.
There are some who do dress more period correct, of course, but line them up with folks dressed like Jack Sparrow and see which one folks think are the real pirates.
I was just looking and this is funny. We are having a renaissance wine tasting fundraiser for our org soon and i hope to god it looks better than that one lol
in a few years, after the Disney movie craze dies down, I'm betting things will become less piratey. Meanwhile, pirates are the number one most commented on thing at my local event (most remembered, most liked, etc.).
Yes, this is a very tiny soft event. Two hours away, Des Moines is getting a permanet festival (the first of its kind built in the Midwest in over 25 years) with no tents -- all buildings. Check out my other videos for a series covering the construction of that event.

Interesting to see you have the same authenticity issues in the US Ren fests as we do in our German Medieval markets :)
Mighty funny, harr harr! ^^
