  • Just heard of Mr. Purdie a few moments ago, and I am just blown away! Here is a fella who is insanely good, not just for some technical prowess, but because he truly loves his art! You can really feel the joy he's coaxing from his kit!!!

  • one of the greatest feel drummers in the world,

  • i've never seen a drummer having this much enthousiasm while plying. love it :)

  • I saw him give a similar demo at NAMM some years ago. Wow. There's a great story about him, Steely Dan and Jeff Porcaro's drumkit.

  • I'd like to see him and clyde stubblefield in a jam session. I'd pay for that.

  • Great musicians always make it look easy.

  • they aint nuttn but rebounds!

  • I like that 2. I just learned more in 1.57 than in a whole lot of years trying to read it . thanks

  • I like that 2

  • Comment removed

  • YEAH! I like that.

  • Only Bernard Purdie is cool enough to grooce on a china, and be cool as a cucumber while doing so..

  • The people that dislike this don't know what groove is or how to groove. All they want to do is just beat and its all they can do

  • i am so proud i share the same second name as him

  • I'm stunned there are 5 miserable twits out there that don't like this??? Just shocked!!

    Its like not liking sunshine...

  • 1:49 Count dracula

  • He says 'remember that boiled egg?' @ 0:36

  • Comment removed

  • @MrDugulbu It was a joke...thats all.

  • @nick4uuk lol he says remember that 12/8

  • @nick4uuk while i know he says "12/8" ...when i saw your comment it instilled that thought into my head, making it hard not to hear boiled egg. rofl

  • @nick4uuk "Remember that 12/8ths?"

  • Very nice!

  • This has made my day and night. This man will live forever. What he did for Steely Dan was beyond price.

  • Does actually sound like a Locomotive.

  • "Don't worry about those ghost notes...ain't nuthin' but REBOUND!"

    Fantastic!

  • How can you not love this man

  • bernard is my favourite drummer of all time because of his lightness of touch, deep deep pocket and pure funky soul....

...but bonham did his thing better than anyone. 110% energy, dirty feel and a great recording drummer for rock.

  • Let him splain to ya... HE LIKE DAT!

  • Now this is drumming. Its so pleasing to the ear. Most drummers now is about speed an to speak plainly it sounds like shit. Unless you're an experience drummer those hybrid rudiments fills sound like noise. Any body can learn rudiments, with practice anybody can get speed but not everybody can create music.........

  • @performanceavtivated Amen !! i'm a drummer eternally looking for groove and pocket.. sadly the best drummers these days are guitar players LOL

  • @checkabreak sry you got no idea what your talking about... There are incredible drummers out there you just clearly havnt looked.

  • @groopysack yes you are so rite lol... still all those pocket drummers i haven't look for yet, are in all reality guitar players tired of the "real drummers" that CAN NOT KEEP A BEAT but can solo till the cows come home lol lol

  • Chris Adler aint got shit on this guy! hahahaha

  • @ShaunDuffyVideo Chris Adler doesn't.. i'm young drummer but i know who Purdie is! Purdie is not a "guy" guy he is GOD fool !! lol

  • If five people decided to put a negative vote, it's their choice. Please stop with the spam/flood messages. Thanks for commenting.

  • @TheHitman1990 - they thought it was a "Dis I Like" button :)

  • One bad drummer! definitely top five

  • its so groovy man my body just sinks

  • this guy is fuckin awesome he makes me laugh and enjoy his technique n style , i love it !

  • sorry man. i guess we just don't see eye to eye on this. i'm not saying one is better because its always a meaningless argument anyway. and just because they both ''play drums'' doesn't mean that they do the same same thing. is it too much to just enjoy a drummer without saying he or she is better or worse than bonham. i'm sure purdy never thought '' i bet zeppelin fans everywhere will wish i was their drummer instead of bonzo''.

  • @bobbybbar1 and @death guy...... when the level of playing drums is as high as both of these icons you shouldnt compare. its childish and preference only. best is an opinion. both of them had more groove than 99.999% of the drummers there are. you both lose arguments when the argument is just stupid.

  • Mozart would be impressed.

  • That is one beastly china he has. and this guy is awesome!!

  • Says at 1:00 "aint nothin' but rebound"...the man is drum gravy! Loving this like sex...only I can't rewind 20 times for sex!

    Hey...at least I'm honest.

  • @splatt33face I could listen to this groove all day with a smile on my face. Ditto for latin feel too.

  • See more Bernard Purdie on SoulDrummers . com

  • why would you try to compare bernard to bonham? it makes no sense whatsoever. try comparing bernard to tony williams or billy cobham, not a rock and roll drummer. its not really fair to do so. plus, bonham's influence is unparalleled. bernards technique is great, but he will never reach as many people as bonham.

  • @bobbybbar1

Actually, it does make sense. They both play the drums. They both played an assortment of musical styles. They are both legendary for their playing.

To the mainstream listener, Purdie is unknown. But to musicians rooted in funk, soul, blues, R&B and jazz (nearly anyone in these days) Purdie is more influential as a whole. People think that Lars from Metallica is an amazing drummer because they are ignorant to the real talent. Purdie > Bonham (RIP)

  • @Deathofatiger1389 Actually, Purdie played a lot of mainstream stuff, too. He's just a studio drummer and doesn't always have his name fixed to a band.

  • This guy is not just the most fucking awesome soul drummer ever, but his personality is just so charming. I would love to be his buddy.

  • I love this shuffle, its just so hard to play though....ain't nutin' but rebound!! lol

  • "OW! hahahahahahaha....yeah! I like that!" lol I love this guy

  • só nao deixa ele tocar samba

  • bow down

  • hes sooo into it

  • John Bonham would be the very first to give premiership to Mr. Purdie: he learned at the master's feet. (Where do you think the Fool in the Rain groove -- and likely the intro to Rock & Roll -- came from?)

  • @ogden700 Agreed, except the intro to "Rock and Roll" is beat-for-beat lifted from "Keep A Knockin'" by Little Richard.

  • 1:46 WHAT!?!?!

  • "Ain't nothin' but rebound!" LOVE IT! Godfather of Grooooooooove.

  • Can an electronic drum pick up ghost notes?

  • @Lacersan not all of them can. most ive used dont regester ghost notes at all

  • @Lacersan they can but actually they suck, better buy a cheappy acoustic set

  • I think I need a smoke after watching this.

  • he's making love to his kit. Great!!!!!!!!

  • YEAH. I like that too.

  • bernard purdy feels the music it just pours out of him where others try so hard and get less out.pure magic

  • my girlfriend is a complete bitch but bernard purdie makes it ok

  • Man, I've played all my life, but I just can't seem to get that sweet of a groove.

  • He is so awesome. I love how into it he is!! You can't help but smile watching him play! :D

  • I like that too, Purdie.. =)

  • Good stuff pt2

  • seems like he holds the right stick really close to the edge...

  • I like this guy much more than Gadd.

  • sooo much soul

  • So basically it's just triplets, two with the hi-hat, and the third with the snare?

  • @darthjoey13 first and third with the hi-hat, second with the snare.

remember the downbeat will fall on the second part of the double stroke.

the pattern starts with a single right on the first down beat

    so: rlrrlrrlrrlrrlr

    hope that helps........

  • @Toshfunk That's how I've been playing it but I just wanted to make sure I was doing it right.

  • this guy makes me so happy.

  • coolest cat around...

  • HAHA!!!! HE IS THE BEST EVER!!! soo happy hahaha

  • He's almost playing "Fool in the Rain" at first.

  • @dubbsmalone Where do you think Led Zeppelin got it from

  • this is why old black men are the coolest mother fuckers in the world, he should legally change his name to mashed potato johnson.

  • @Masterrese Funniest comment I have ever read.

  • purdie is the man

  • i like that

  • Don't worry 'bout those ghost notes..they ain't nothing but rebound! :)

  • this rhythm plays in my head throughout the day. the best damn groove ever laid down, and he does it so easily!!!

  • @sektr7g You can't learn it. It's either in your blood or it ain't.

  • YEAH!! I like that.

  • Yeah

    I like it

    ^nuff said right there

  • One day I'll play ghostnotes that well...

  • This guy is just dope n funny as fcuk =DD. Like a James Brown on a drum set.

  • im having trouble learning this

    hess an awsome drummer

  • I love this guy so much! He is brilliant!! I feel like hugging him! So fucking amazing!!

  • YES!

  • Grandissimo!

  • Purdie is one of my biggest influences as a drummer - there's nothing like his feel.

  • u r so amazin

  • AIN'T NOTHING BUT REBOUND!!

    this man is epic!

  • better than bonham is the biggest understatement I've ever heard...of course it's all a matter of opinion and taste but I think if you a b'd those 2 cats for a panel of vet musicians they'd all be flipping out over bernards genius...as well as his heart-warming charisma...bonham was a hugely influential player but he was nowhere near as prolific or flexible as bernard....bernard may be the greatest of all time

  • @manifestgtr agreed

  • @manifestgtr

Bonham said that Purdie was one of his influences. Some of Bonham's playing is a like a stiffer version of Purdie.

  • @lordkoos Agreed. Thats saying something too, when someone makes Bonham sound stiff.

  • Comment removed

  • Better than Bonham. There, I said it.

  • AHAHAH I guess. funny how you put it though! :D

  • @Antiks72 Lots of drummers are better than Bonham. People just elevate him because he's dead.

  • @cybertooth49 Well, he had a killer heavy sound, but I think you're right. I wonder if racism has anything to do with it? Seems lots of white musicians get credit while blacks are ignored.

  • @Antiks72 I think it's an issue of chronology. Bonham was one of the earlier examples of that sound, and as a result of that (and partially his very premature death) he is exalted. You also wouldn't see many blacks playing in that style at that time.

  • I love this guy he has so much fun with it, and a few months ago I sort of borrowed his "ghost notes," I love that sound it's like perpetual motion the way they walk across the snare a hot sultry groove.

  • OHHamm...baah! DEEEH!

  • 1:52 YES!

  • 0:46 - 0:50

    that was friggin awesome

  • Hes like the Justin WIlson of Drumming ; D

  • haha that's perfect

  • Bernard Purdie, John Bonham and Jeff Parcaro...the best shufflers ever!! 5/5

  • Man how can you not smile when you watch Bernard!

I was talking to my friend who is a drummer, and I was like hey I've been checking out alot of Bernard Purdie lately. Have you heard of him? And he was like yeah, in NYC I studied with him. Needless to say I almost fainted.

  • YEAH i like that
