I have never seen someone having so much real inner fun and pleasure in something. God bless him. And damn the guy is funky...Thanks a lot for posting...
It must have been a real treat to have him in the studio. He seems like the kind of guy who can talk drums for hoursss... and never lose interest in it.
Just heard of Mr. Purdie a few moments ago, and I am just blown away! Here is a fella who is insanely good, not just for some technical prowess, but because he truly loves his art! You can really feel the joy he's coaxing from his kit!!!
Now this is drumming. Its so pleasing to the ear. Most drummers now is about speed an to speak plainly it sounds like shit. Unless you're an experience drummer those hybrid rudiments fills sound like noise. Any body can learn rudiments, with practice anybody can get speed but not everybody can create music.........
@groopysack yes you are so rite lol... still all those pocket drummers i haven't look for yet, are in all reality guitar players tired of the "real drummers" that CAN NOT KEEP A BEAT but can solo till the cows come home lol lol
sorry man. i guess we just don't see eye to eye on this. i'm not saying one is better because its always a meaningless argument anyway. and just because they both ''play drums'' doesn't mean that they do the same same thing. is it too much to just enjoy a drummer without saying he or she is better or worse than bonham. i'm sure purdy never thought '' i bet zeppelin fans everywhere will wish i was their drummer instead of bonzo''.
@bobbybbar1 and @death guy...... when the level of playing drums is as high as both of these icons you shouldnt compare. its childish and preference only. best is an opinion. both of them had more groove than 99.999% of the drummers there are. you both lose arguments when the argument is just stupid.
why would you try to compare bernard to bonham? it makes no sense whatsoever. try comparing bernard to tony williams or billy cobham, not a rock and roll drummer. its not really fair to do so. plus, bonham's influence is unparalleled. bernards technique is great, but he will never reach as many people as bonham.
Actually, it does make sense. They both play the drums. They both played an assortment of musical styles. They are both legendary for their playing.
To the mainstream listener, Purdie is unknown. But to musicians rooted in funk, soul, blues, R&B and jazz (nearly anyone in these days) Purdie is more influential as a whole. People think that Lars from Metallica is an amazing drummer because they are ignorant to the real talent. Purdie > Bonham (RIP)
@Deathofatiger1389 Actually, Purdie played a lot of mainstream stuff, too. He's just a studio drummer and doesn't always have his name fixed to a band.
John Bonham would be the very first to give premiership to Mr. Purdie: he learned at the master's feet. (Where do you think the Fool in the Rain groove -- and likely the intro to Rock & Roll -- came from?)
better than bonham is the biggest understatement I've ever heard...of course it's all a matter of opinion and taste but I think if you a b'd those 2 cats for a panel of vet musicians they'd all be flipping out over bernards genius...as well as his heart-warming charisma...bonham was a hugely influential player but he was nowhere near as prolific or flexible as bernard....bernard may be the greatest of all time
@cybertooth49 Well, he had a killer heavy sound, but I think you're right. I wonder if racism has anything to do with it? Seems lots of white musicians get credit while blacks are ignored.
@Antiks72 I think it's an issue of chronology. Bonham was one of the earlier examples of that sound, and as a result of that (and partially his very premature death) he is exalted. You also wouldn't see many blacks playing in that style at that time.
I love this guy he has so much fun with it, and a few months ago I sort of borrowed his "ghost notes," I love that sound it's like perpetual motion the way they walk across the snare a hot sultry groove.
I was talking to my friend who is a drummer, and I was like hey I've been checking out alot of Bernard Purdie lately. Have you heard of him? And he was like yeah, in NYC I studied with him. Needless to say I almost fainted.
