HI enjoyed your video. Are they OK just in the tub like that in paper envelopes and bags? Guys selling long-term seeds online put them in what look like sealed Mylar bags. I'm trying to learn thanks.
i keep all my seeds in camping coolers n they do really well. just use the standard size. n i'm fixing 2 buy a 3rd one. i can never have 2 many seeds n/or varieties. i plan on using seeds as trade items if needed or just sharing when needed. ty 4 all the info u share.
Can I just buy a variety of Ed Hume Seed packs a little at a time and store them at room temperature? I don't have freezer room and will putting them in a plastic Sterilite box be good enough? Someone said to put rice in the bottom to take care of moisture? Thanks for any help you can give me....
Where do you start your plants? I was going to suggest that you build a hoophouse/ greenhouse. You can build it on a weekend for 150 to 200 dollars and they work great. Check out my channel and see how I build mine. Oh... Don't build it too close to a tree. My last 2 videos will show you why!! Subscribe if you like!
Excellent video! After viewing it, I immediately went out and started purchasing a variety of seeds . . . . to be added to the leftovers that Chief Gardener has from this year. I really had to dig for pinto beans and mustard greens -- I'll go ahead and order some from a catalog when Chrief Gardener sets forth his plans.
@rayscar2 : Literally ALL seeds will have listed on the back of the package, germination time, and time to harvest, depending on your location in the the USA,the package also list a planting guide.and time to plant, depending upon location
how many acres do you need of sustain a family of five for a year on vegies alone? and what kind of vegies do i need to sustain my nutrition needs? im not a vegetarian or anything but the "know how" will add to my will to survive mind. im guessing (ive never canned before nor im a nutritionist) we will need about 5 pints jars of mix vegies a day?
I've been waiting all winter for your garden videos. I do a couple acres of garden and I love watching your garden videos because they get my creative gears turning. I'd watch them all day if I had the time. I hope you make lots of them this year... CHEERS!
I just love to look through my seeds and enjoy it when you check yours.Do you rotate seeds?I mean i bought 2011 cucumbers seed but i am going to plant my 2008 cucumber seed if it don't germinate then i will plant the latest one.i rather use up the oldest seed frist than lose it to getting old.I may try and freeze my seeds but i am going to freeze my new seeds rather than the older ones. But after i have planted them. Thanks for the nice video !!Do you cann your garden veggies?
Sir, might I suggest that you consider that foods that wildlife is eating from your garden is a way for you to add their meat to your food. I don't know about you, but I can live longer on a deer than I can on an ear of corn. Something to think about.
That I am saving the seeds from this year's plants as a stock for my planting next year to save money in trying to buy them. I believe this is a move in this country to stop people growing your own vegetables and making the seeds out of reach for those on a low income, as that is what most are using at the moment to essentially feed their families
I would also add 10lbs or so of sunflower seeds (birdseed isle works just fine). Sunflower micro greens can be ready in as little as 7 days and it only takes about a cup for a nice flat of micro greens. Plant in succession and have a flat ready every few days. They taste just like sunflower seeds and in a SHTF situation would be a great 'quick' green while everything else is getting going. I grow micro greens all the time, love them! Nice vid, thanks!
Sir, I would just like to thank you for all the hard work and time you have in these videos. I know watch them almost religously, and as a younger member of society at the age of 20 I'm very grateful for your input and advice on survival and SHTF situations. Thank you is all i can say
Ummm........ gardening is nice. Sucks when all the food comes in all in the same two weeks. I'd think about more root vegtables that can be stored without refridgeration or canning. Your concept is solid.
On amazon I found a open pollinated & Heirloom seed kit, with 43 varieties, and 22,000 seeds. Includes directions on how to harvest seeds from your plants so you can continue to plant (open pollinated means you can use seeds from the plant, unlike Burpees and the like). Store up to 8yrs at room temp, 15 in fridge, and 25 in freezer. Here's link: amazon(dot)com/Emergency-Food-Survival-Variety-Organic/dp/B004H8ZHCM/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3MMLZB0BNZUQG&colid=23A4FM8ZJAB0C
@chiefmiko - if kept frozen, seeds can last for years, sometimes decades. Do a google search for "doomsday seed vault". Some of the seed their storing can stay viable for 100 years if kept frozen.
For apartment dwellers (like myself) I would highly recommend learning how to sprout beans and seeds indoors. Still, saving seeds & beans for later planting is still a good idea, even if you don't have the space to grow them. Someone you know might be able to use them. Or you can barter with them, if necessary. Your canned goods will not last forever. Think beyond the cans.
If you were going to use those secondary seeds in an emergency situation, meaning that you were intending to stay there for am extended time, I would certainly bring corn seed. I would also recommend having a compost pile already working at your camp. You can companion plant corn, beans and squash and they will compliment each other's growth. You probably won't even need fertilizer if you have, good soil, good compost and use this "three sisters" method.
@Fuscoooo - A lot of times, people that wear their watches to the inside are private people. Watches can say a lot about people. For example - rich people may like to wear gold watches to show off their wealth.
@Fuscoooo also military types wear it facing in toward the body to reduce the chance of light reflecting off of it thus giving away your position. other reasons are that the watch surface is more protected from the occasional scratch, as well as the fact that it easier to look at when holding a rifle.
@psycofloyd On that note, avoid Asgrow, Channel, Dekalb, Deltapine, Fielder's Choice, Fontanelle, Gold Country, Heritage, Hubner, Jung, Kruger, Lewis Hybrids, REA Hybrid, Specialty, Stewart, Stone Seed Group, and Trelay.
They're all made by the Big M(Don't make me say it)
I'm sure you've thought it through already, but if you get seeds from a cantaloupe you grew for instance, nowadays a huge portion of seeds on the market are terminator seeds so the cantaloupe seeds you harvested from the cantaloupe you grew could be infertile. Thanks for the videos! Keep them coming!
@luckyfire3 seeds can store almost indefinatly i found some seeds in the garage packed by my great grandfather ( carrot and pea seeds) he dated them at 1936 on the box and i grew them in 2010
@KiwiTomCrawford do your research on the seeds. some seeds are far more resilient than others. there are seeds that will keep virtually forever, others may only last a couple years.
Do you keep your seeds in a fridge or in a air Tight container on a shelf

not that stock piling seed is a bad idea but you might want to focus on produce that dont require ALOT of water like your watermelon.

GMO seeds = bad
Buy organic heirloom seeds. Your doing your neighbors a favor if you do and that's important in a SHTF scenario.

when SHTF, eating healthy non-GMO's is no longer a concern, only survival.

@3VOLution3NO GMO's slowly kill you. Organic food heals you. In a SHTF scenario organic food will be worth more than diamonds.

You are thinking ahead. People will stock pile cans and jars of food. But they will run out so you will need to be able to grow your own.
