@ntrlover82 Congrats on choosing the oboe. I was there once. Know I'm a professional oboe ist in a professional wind quartet in the Netherlands. Here is some advice. The oboe is an amazing instrument. I play oboe, flute, tenor sax, and a bunch of other instruments as well. The fingering for flute and oboe is somewhat similar. It takes a little time getting used to the reed (at least it did for me) but I love the oboe. It wouldn't impair your flute playing.
I used to play oboe in junior high school and was the first chair captain all three years. For some stupid reason, I gave it up when I moved on to high school. I seriously miss it and wish I had never sold my oboe. I am getting a flute for Christmas and I hope to master playing that. I do so love playing instrumental music. :)
I used to play oboe throughout school....Wasn't all that good but listening to this makes me really miss it! Being at uni I carn't really start again either :s
Hello, I've been playing oboe for seven years, and I'll soon be learning the English Horn in order to be part of a pit band for a high school production of Les Misérables. Do you have any tips on playing English Horn, or is it a lot like the oboe, but bigger? (By the way, this is absolutely beautiful!)
I don't know what all the fuss is about. I'm a euphonium(baritone) player who played, according to my friend who plays it "a really good beginner sound". Within # months I was already playing Camille Saint Saens 2nd movement for oboe. I think everyone who sais oboe is hard, has REALLY WIMPY AIR!!!!
@reennea75 Well congratulations, but it's not about the "really wimpy air", but the oboe has a very large amount of resistance and back pressure. The oboe is the only instrument in which one has to exhale before every inhale because oboe players can actually choke on stale air because it has not escaped fast enough. Now as far as play the 2nd movement, did you "play" it or did you play it? There's a difference in all entirety.
I've played flute for four years and alto saxophone for one year I'm 16 years old, and I've always wanted to learn oboe, and clarinet. If I start playing oboe, will that ruin my flute playing? Can you give me any tips besides practice?(:
Why not play both? This is my third year playing oboe, and I absoulately love it. On top of that I have taking a liking to jazz so I joined my school jazz band on top of concert band. In jazz band I play tenor sax, and its great, I'm not nearly as good on it as I am on the oboe but it least I can be in a jazz band! I recommend you do the same!
Oh wow, I didn't even think it was possible for an oboe ensemble to sound good. They're usually better used sparingly, or maybe that's just when I play xD
I'm in my second year of Oboe, and I'm so glad I got over that gross, stacatto, loud duck sound, but I'm looking for find a way to play as lovely as you? I use KGE reeds, and I currently lend an oboe from the school, although getting a new one next year (WOO), so that should improve it some what. Any tips? (:
I've been playing oboe for all of two weeks now. I am a clarinet player and my band director asked me to learn how to play oboe. My band director also asked me to look up videos of oboe players so that I can hear what it should sound like as I get better. It is definitely a beautiful instrument even if I can't play it that well yet. I'm a sophomore in high school and I have auditions on oboe and clarinet in a week. I'm picking it up quickly but Id like to have learned how to play oboe earlier
I have been playing the oboe for 3 years now. I'm really good but I don't sound anything like that. It's amazing! I hope some day I'll be that good. I guess I just need more practice.
I just started playing the oboe about three days ago and I have to say it's quite different from the Bliss Clarinet I'd been playing previously. I find it quite frustrating at times and giving up sounds tempting... at least until I heard a note come out right and beautiful! This piece was beautiful by the way.. any advice for someone who's just started out? Thanks, Nev.
@nevnev11 if you read my comment to songyanhou, i pretty much have the same advice. I might play clarinet for marching season. some genus made the oboe unmarchable!
@Tenuto07 Thank you! ahah, yes, at times I wonder why they made an instrument so difficult to play! Actually, I'm a freshman too and to be honest, the instrument's actually making me get back on work because my music teacher wants me to practice at least two hours every night. (My parents absolutely HATE him :P ) It's so hard not to get frustrated though, the thing sounds like a dying duck at times. -.- Good luck with the clarinet! :)
@nevnev11 thanks! last year we had these things called practice sheets and you are supposed to do one every week. I have never turned one in for the past 3 years. I did practice and my teacher (who my parents actually liked) believed me and he was my favorite teacher. well he still kinda is cause my new teachers are boring. except for my new band director... and you are right i always get comments saying that oboes sound like dying ducks!
@Tenuto07 Ah, my music program works a bit differently than yours, we only start using actual instruments in high school. To tell you the truth, the first time I ever read a piece of sheet music successfully was about a month and half ago, when I started taking music. Trust me, I love my music teacher. He's so weird and insane that he makes the class interesting! :) The sound of the instrument is quite a coincidence, my music teacher compared me taking to the oboe like a duck to water... ahah.
@nevnev11 wow thats nice of him! our district's music program starts in fifth grade and you go on until you dont wan't to play anymore. are you the only oboe in your class? there are five of us this year. my friend and I in Symphonic band and my other friend and some upperclassmen in wind symphonic. It's really hard I hope i get into wind next year!
@Tenuto07 It is! Our music programs starts in 9th grade (unless you count playing the recorder in 4th) Yeah, I am, actually, I'm the only oboe player in the high school and the second person on the double reed (the other is a bassoon player, a friend of mine actually). Since I only just started playing, I've decided to take it slow, but I'll be auditioning for the local Youth symphony by next year, at least that's what I hope to do. Good luck with wind symphonic!
@Tenuto07 No problem, but I should be the one thanking you! Your advice helped me quite a bit! I'll keep at it since you've renewed my faith in the instrument, (this all talked me out of throwing it against the wall...) so really, Thank you SOOOO MUCH for all the help.
@Bandontherun18 a few years ago in my marching band they did have an oboist in the show. apparently he stood there and played while the rest of the band marched. I think he had a solo. but they should really add more oboe parts into marching bands.
@SongyanHou hey songyanhou, I've been playing the oboe since 5th grade (I'm a freshman this year) I still to this day (i sound old) remember my first lesson. If you have been reading any of the other comments, i would suggest starting out with a cane reed. and also dont get frustrated with it to easily, the oboe is one of the hardest instruments to learn. i suggest cleaning it at least once a week... and oh yeah, don't make my mistake of dropping your reed down the oboe! good luck! ~Tenuto07
The slow but very blending style of the oboes and an English horn makes me feel at peace and it is just so beautiful... You guys are amazing at your instruments thank you for sharing this with everyone; I play the oboe as well and hope to be as good as this or better thank you for the inspiration!
Hello, I am planning on playing the oboe in a few months at my middle school and right now I am working on mastering the clarinet. But I have a question, should I start out with a wooden reed or a plastic one? I know that when you play with the plastic reed it doesn't sound as nice, but that's what my piano teacher told me to start out with. Hope you can help.
@ntrlover82 Hi. I'd love to help, but I've never played on a plastic oboe reed. But if it lasts longer and is softer then a wooden reed then it may be a better option to start with. The good sound can come later. Best of luck. Rixon.
I've played oboe for 5 years and I have to say that I really discourage you from using plastic oboe reeds. You don't have to break them in which is nice, but the sound quality is poor and it would be better to develop your embouchure with a wooden reed so you can learn earlier on how to find the perfect reed for you and learn to adjust :)
@ntrlover82 always start out on the wood, they are harder, but you need to build up stamina. I play oboe, it is quite different from Clarinet, it takes much more air pressure so I recommend building your stamina up to a level 4 or 5 wood reed on the Clarinet before you switch! Good luck!
@ntrlover82 : I highly discourage you from using a plastic reed for oboe. Plastic reeds do not have the freedom to vibrate, which gives you very little control over your sound. You will want to start with a medium soft or medium cane reed, and as your lip strength increases, you can move up to a harder strength (which will give you more resistance and a fuller sound). Hope that helps!
@ntrlover82 I would start out with a wooden reed. I've never heard of anyone beginning on a plastic reed, and really the sound at first is going to be horrible anyways (sorry) so I would just use a wooden one. I've heard the beginning oboist to be described as a "dying duck" but the oboe is awesome despite that and I hope you stick with it, you will be rewarded with the awesomeness of oboe power!!! :)
@ntrlover82 i have played with both i started on wood and as long as your careful wood is the best for tone and for ensemble but if you think you will drop the read then plastic is the way to go at least for the first few months and you figure out how awesome oboe is!!! good luck to you!
Hi, I've been playing the oboe for 9 years and have been trained by a professional oboist. My advice is to begin with a wooden reed; I started on plastic and it trains your mouth muscles differently...I had to be re-trained on a wooden reed. Also, if you really want to succeed at oboe you'll need a good instrument (I reccommend a plastic Fox oboe if you don't plan on playing professionally), and a good teacher...you cannot go it alone on the oboe! Best wishes, oboe is a rewarding instrument!
@ntrlover82 - I don't know if you've gotten an answer for your plastic reed question, so I'm going to try and answer.
I used plastic reeds for a month or two before I decided I disliked them. I think it depends on personal choice, but is your piano teacher an oboe player? Because the idea of plastic reeds is nice (harder to break, last longer), but the tuning and sounds is absolutely dreadful (for me, that is.)
So I'd recommend just starting with a wooden reed c: they're fun anyways.
@ntrlover82 i just started at my school too. you should really use wooden ones they wear out in a month. if you really want to use plastic do it.But use wooden ones for concerts
@ntrlover82 When I started, I had some plastic reeds. They were very easy to play but sounded terrible. It wasn't long (a few weeks) before I had a good teacher who made reeds for me. I am now a professional oboist. I recommend finding the best teacher you can find in your area and have him/her recommend what to do. It's important to have a good start. You don't want to get any bad habits!
CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE ALSO VERY GREAT MUSICIANS HAVE TO GET TO DISCIPLINE BECAUSE INTERPRETATION MUST PRACTICE THESE SONGS LONG HOURS. I AM A MEXICAN THAT LOVES MUSIC AND APPRECIATE recognize the talents of people like you.
ive played the oboe for a year since i was 12 and i love it but the rest of my family complain that its too loud. also im not very good so that doesnt help i currently learn with my school and borrow an oboe from the school too,but my mum says if i keep up practising every day she will let me have private lessons and get my own oboe :D
@loverponies98 Hi. My mum said the same to me when I was young. But you're doing better than me...I didn't even start the oboe till I was 13! So technically you're a year ahead of me. And now my mum doesn't mind all those years of loud, bad playing coming from my room, 'cause she gets free tickets to all our concerts. So keep practicing : ) Best of luck, from Rixon.
@BrandyBugKinsman Hi. Well done teaching yourself. A good sound only comes with years of practice. And a good teacher will help. Listen to lots of recordings of Oboists like Diana Doherty and Francois Leleux. And check out "playwithapro" dot com. And keep playing. Best of luck. Rixon.
@Jackwahoo I personally prefer Emerald reeds.not entirely recommended for people just starting oboe(since they're a bit tougher to use),but for people still learning how to play they're really good.
@shan4144 I think there is more than 1 type of oboe just like more than one type of clarinet flute saxophone , etc. The middle guy is playing an oboe but probably in a different key
@ilovefrenchhorn35 guy in the middle's playing an english horn :) oboe family, but not called any form of oboe. There are a few like that though... Bass oboe. *.*
@ilovefrenchhorn35 Quite right. It's an English Horn or Cor Anglais which is in the key of F (a 5th lower than the oboe). There are other types of oboe too, the bass oboe and the Oboe D'Amore. But see if you can find out why it's called an English Horn??? I'll give you a tip...it's not English and it's not a Horn. : )
does one really expect that Beethoven composed songs based on player ability, without the real expactation that it would be played: or that his gift out-weighed anything else............
the only flaw in the great composer's music is that they had to please someone, for whatever reason.........so i ask you.......give me the best 'rock-star"......
if one wants to split hairs about whether the middle player is playing an oboe, then one has to explain to me how to pick fly-shit out of a pepper shaker.......... good nite!
oh my gosh they are so good and it is taking me 4eva to learn the notes well i can remember the fingering but i mean where my mouth goes up or down on the reed! see me playing the oboe on my channel soon i just got my account hurtful accuosions not allowed and will b deleated!!!!
@soulessginger971 Thanks for your comment. Good point, but it's called an oboe trio mainly because the English horn is in the "Oboe family" of instruments. A more difficult question to answer is why a piece for Violin, Cello and Piano is called a Piano Trio. Cheers, Rixon.
Hi. c: I use KGE reeds and have been playing for just over a year.
My sound is okay, but nowhere near as clear and sweet at this. How did you work on getting your sound so... perfect? My lips are a problem, but I'm working on sucking them in. I've been playing for just over a year and use KGE reeds, so I'm not sure how to fix my problem. c:
@mexicangirl18 Hi. You're right on both counts. As a youth, Beethoven wrote this Oboe Trio using a theme from Mozart's Opera Don Giovanni. Confusing, I know. Cheers, Rixon.
This is outstanding. And the camera on oboe 2 just before 8 minutes will be an excellent example for my students of the correct action of the 1/2 hole finger. Bravo!!
@maplereed Hi. Thanks for your comment. I was a bit worried about that variation, more about where to breath than the notes. I had planned to circular breath, but forgot to at the performance, but just managed to make it to the end. ; )
@starcutie41532 You should make sure you have a teacher. And whatever you do DO NOT BUY STORE REEDS! You can buy them from you teacher hand made, they are a little more expensive but worth it tone wise.
@HappySlippers20 just to add to that, whether you buy store bought reeds or not is up to you, but the manufacturer is definitely something to look in to. try a few different types if you go for that, I'd personally recommend Lesher reeds if you go with that, but try out a few brands, they may not work as well for you as they do for me. And if possible, if you do get an oboe teacher, and you do go with store bought reeds, see if your teacher can fix them up a bit. cheaper, and just as good. :)
Hi i have been playin since the 6th grade and i am heading in to 9th and i was wondering if you could give me some time on to improve and to keep a steady breath. While do cresendos and decresendos.
this is la ci darem from don giovanni. if you say don juan people might get confused with the strauss. (although i think don giovanni and don juan mean the same thing?)
Sometimes I stop! and start to think to myself:"How can peoples likes Justin Bieber and Lady gaga?Where's the culture of those people?"(sorry i have a terrible english)
Thanks you for introducing me to this lovely trio by Beethoven! magnificent playing by all three of you guys, but I want to single out the cor-anglais player for the warmth of his sound & smooth tonguing & fingering in the 2nd variation. Bravo to all of you!
This is amazing. I was playing since 7th grade till graduated from university (music) sadly I stopped playing now. Then I heard this and it was inspired me again but I think it was late for me already. Good luck for all player :)
I've been playing the oboe since fifth grade and am now going into high school, but whenever I play, whether for a few minutes or an hour, I feel faint after playing. Do you have any tips for me so I don't end up so light-headed?
This is a great performance! I played this piece on my recital (1st oboe), and I used this video to help me get an idea of the tempos. The recital went very well might I add :) Thanks for the upload!
@royaldanishoboes Hello I'm a 15 yr. old oboist and I wanted to ask for advice on tuning. My b natural adn c natural (2nd octave) almost all the time sounds the exact same. I'm starting to think maybe my instrument has a smashed key in there somewhere but I'm really confused..Please help. Oh and any advice on fast tonguing?
i taught myself how to play the oboe after being a flautist. (: i love the instrument. but it takes FOREVER to break in a new reed. and im getting braces in a week, any advice for playing with braces?
@tuttifruityxDD Hi. I had braces from when I was 16-18yrs old. It's not easy playing the oboe with braces. But it was worth it once they came off ; ) The dentist gave me some wax you cover the braces with so as not to cut your lips, and after a while you get used to it. Just try and keep playing. Best of luck. Rixon - Copenhagen.
This is true talent. I have this downloaded to my ipod, and i literally listen to it every night before I go to bed. I'm absolutely in love with this. :]

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I'm a euphonium(baritone) player who played, according to my friend who plays it "a really good beginner sound". Within # months I was already playing Camille Saint Saens 2nd movement for oboe. I think everyone who sais oboe is hard, has REALLY WIMPY AIR!!!!
reennea75 3 months ago
@reennea75 Well congratulations, but it's not about the "really wimpy air", but the oboe has a very large amount of resistance and back pressure. The oboe is the only instrument in which one has to exhale before every inhale because oboe players can actually choke on stale air because it has not escaped fast enough. Now as far as play the 2nd movement, did you "play" it or did you play it? There's a difference in all entirety.

I love this arrangement! Sounds great.
A question I have is, how can I improve tone? My playing sounds rather ducky I'm afraid :(

Thanks, Nev.
nevnev11 4 months ago
@nevnev11 if you read my comment to songyanhou, i pretty much have the same advice. I might play clarinet for marching season. some genus made the oboe unmarchable!
Tenuto07 4 months ago
@Tenuto07 Thank you! ahah, yes, at times I wonder why they made an instrument so difficult to play! Actually, I'm a freshman too and to be honest, the instrument's actually making me get back on work because my music teacher wants me to practice at least two hours every night. (My parents absolutely HATE him :P ) It's so hard not to get frustrated though, the thing sounds like a dying duck at times. -.- Good luck with the clarinet! :)
nevnev11 4 months ago
@nevnev11 thanks! last year we had these things called practice sheets and you are supposed to do one every week. I have never turned one in for the past 3 years. I did practice and my teacher (who my parents actually liked) believed me and he was my favorite teacher. well he still kinda is cause my new teachers are boring. except for my new band director... and you are right i always get comments saying that oboes sound like dying ducks!
Tenuto07 4 months ago
@Tenuto07 Ah, my music program works a bit differently than yours, we only start using actual instruments in high school. To tell you the truth, the first time I ever read a piece of sheet music successfully was about a month and half ago, when I started taking music. Trust me, I love my music teacher. He's so weird and insane that he makes the class interesting! :) The sound of the instrument is quite a coincidence, my music teacher compared me taking to the oboe like a duck to water... ahah.
nevnev11 4 months ago
@nevnev11 wow thats nice of him! our district's music program starts in fifth grade and you go on until you dont wan't to play anymore. are you the only oboe in your class? there are five of us this year. my friend and I in Symphonic band and my other friend and some upperclassmen in wind symphonic. It's really hard I hope i get into wind next year!
Tenuto07 4 months ago
@Tenuto07 It is! Our music programs starts in 9th grade (unless you count playing the recorder in 4th) Yeah, I am, actually, I'm the only oboe player in the high school and the second person on the double reed (the other is a bassoon player, a friend of mine actually). Since I only just started playing, I've decided to take it slow, but I'll be auditioning for the local Youth symphony by next year, at least that's what I hope to do. Good luck with wind symphonic!
nevnev11 4 months ago
@nevnev11 Thanks again, and I hope the oboe goes well with you. I know its not an easy instrument to play but you will get it in time.
Tenuto07 4 months ago
@Tenuto07 No problem, but I should be the one thanking you! Your advice helped me quite a bit! I'll keep at it since you've renewed my faith in the instrument, (this all talked me out of throwing it against the wall...) so really, Thank you SOOOO MUCH for all the help.

SongyanHou 4 months ago

Hope you can help.
ntrlover82 4 months ago
@ntrlover82 Hi. I'd love to help, but I've never played on a plastic oboe reed. But if it lasts longer and is softer then a wooden reed then it may be a better option to start with. The good sound can come later. Best of luck. Rixon.
royaldanishoboes 4 months ago
@royaldanishoboes
I've played oboe for 5 years and I have to say that I really discourage you from using plastic oboe reeds. You don't have to break them in which is nice, but the sound quality is poor and it would be better to develop your embouchure with a wooden reed so you can learn earlier on how to find the perfect reed for you and learn to adjust :)
nguyenwhen 2 months ago
@ntrlover82 You'll get sick from a plastic reed. Sounds awful, no playing pleasure. A light real (cane) reed can sound pleasant at the same time.
FabioCostaMusic 4 months ago
@ntrlover82 always start out on the wood, they are harder, but you need to build up stamina. I play oboe, it is quite different from Clarinet, it takes much more air pressure so I recommend building your stamina up to a level 4 or 5 wood reed on the Clarinet before you switch! Good luck!
horseluvrsll 4 months ago
@ntrlover82 : I highly discourage you from using a plastic reed for oboe. Plastic reeds do not have the freedom to vibrate, which gives you very little control over your sound. You will want to start with a medium soft or medium cane reed, and as your lip strength increases, you can move up to a harder strength (which will give you more resistance and a fuller sound). Hope that helps!

@ntrlover82 good luck !

Bandontherun18 4 months ago
@ntrlover82 i have played with both i started on wood and as long as your careful wood is the best for tone and for ensemble but if you think you will drop the read then plastic is the way to go at least for the first few months and you figure out how awesome oboe is!!! good luck to you!
guitaristwanted123 4 months ago
Hi, I've been playing the oboe for 9 years and have been trained by a professional oboist. My advice is to begin with a wooden reed; I started on plastic and it trains your mouth muscles differently...I had to be re-trained on a wooden reed. Also, if you really want to succeed at oboe you'll need a good instrument (I reccommend a plastic Fox oboe if you don't plan on playing professionally), and a good teacher...you cannot go it alone on the oboe! Best wishes, oboe is a rewarding instrument!
izzles369 3 months ago
@ntrlover82 - I don't know if you've gotten an answer for your plastic reed question, so I'm going to try and answer.
I used plastic reeds for a month or two before I decided I disliked them. I think it depends on personal choice, but is your piano teacher an oboe player? Because the idea of plastic reeds is nice (harder to break, last longer), but the tuning and sounds is absolutely dreadful (for me, that is.)
So I'd recommend just starting with a wooden reed c: they're fun anyways.
Ourangey 3 months ago
@ntrlover82 i just started at my school too. you should really use wooden ones they wear out in a month. if you really want to use plastic do it.But use wooden ones for concerts
zipsaw09 2 months ago
@ntrlover82 When I started, I had some plastic reeds. They were very easy to play but sounded terrible. It wasn't long (a few weeks) before I had a good teacher who made reeds for me. I am now a professional oboist. I recommend finding the best teacher you can find in your area and have him/her recommend what to do. It's important to have a good start. You don't want to get any bad habits!

soulessginger971 5 months ago
@soulessginger971 Thanks for your comment. Good point, but it's called an oboe trio mainly because the English horn is in the "Oboe family" of instruments. A more difficult question to answer is why a piece for Violin, Cello and Piano is called a Piano Trio. Cheers, Rixon.
royaldanishoboes 5 months ago 12
@royaldanishoboes A better question is why the English Horn is called the English Horn. It's not English nor is it a horn!

starcutie41532 6 months ago
@starcutie41532 You should make sure you have a teacher. And whatever you do DO NOT BUY STORE REEDS! You can buy them from you teacher hand made, they are a little more expensive but worth it tone wise.
HappySlippers20 5 months ago
@HappySlippers20 just to add to that, whether you buy store bought reeds or not is up to you, but the manufacturer is definitely something to look in to. try a few different types if you go for that, I'd personally recommend Lesher reeds if you go with that, but try out a few brands, they may not work as well for you as they do for me. And if possible, if you do get an oboe teacher, and you do go with store bought reeds, see if your teacher can fix them up a bit. cheaper, and just as good. :)
