@Bangurdead25 -- Actually, since most of the people of Jesus's time who were not Romans viewed them in much the same way that people who were not German viewed the Nazis during the 1930's and 1940's (as brutally violent tyrants), I can only assume that the director intended you to make that association...and frankly, I think it's very apropos. For that matter, it's hardly a secret that Hitler wanted to create a Germanic empire and used imagery reminiscent of ancient Rome.
Come on people, they are stage acting, not film acting, so it comes off over the top. I love this version and the 70s. There is room for both. No need to for them to clash.
As much as I prefer the original. I will say this Pilate is more intimidating by far and I like the fact tht Jesus really seems to react. In the original I find that his reactions in this scene fell short.
@LyleFreewing Really? I can't take this dude seriously at all. He's way over-acting. And Jesus is supposed to be calm and collected and not react. Because he's, you know, Jesus.
I'm not trying to be provocative but does anyone know if the actor playing Pilate, Fred Johanson, is mixed race. I'm just curious. What's his background besides Swedish, if any.
I just recently came upon this production's and it's videos....and good lord if the guy playing Pilate doesn't FAIL on every single level imaginable. He really doesn't get a single snippet of his character right. From his non-verbal/facial acting that makes arnold scwarzenegger look like Anthony Hopkins, to his..silly M. Bison halloween costume..to his delivery, which just drives home that he has no clue whatsoever about the character he's playing. Plz, more laughable pauses in yr lines
"Fail on every single level imaginable"...compared to what? Personally, I enjoyed this potrayal of Pilate more than the 1973 film (to be fair, I haven't seen the show live yet). The over-the-top acting worked very well, and as for the costume...you've gotta take it in stride with the rest of the setting, none of which is meant to be Biblically accurate.
A careful analysis of the data at hand which doesn't include prostrating oneself before a dead carpenter who's claims are without any substance whatsoever? Just a suggestion...! V.
I'll admit it. I do like the 73 one a little more only because I saw it first. But this version is good too. There's room for both. :)

Painful...just painful. I would love it if Freddy here would stop shouting at me and actually sing, because I know he can. -__-
Dennen's portrayal was better because of the subtlety in his character. He portrayed the conflict so well. This guy just...over does it.
And I can't take him seriously as an authority figure at all. He reminds me too much of a teddy bear. O.o
