"Hell" is a state of mind. becuase it would be idolatry and blasphemy to equate God to some physical thing, i.e., "sitting on a throne in the clouds". when the prophets spoke of good and evil. the physical aspects they used to describe were metaphores
these descriptions must have been meant (because of the prophet's deep and spiritual nature) to be symbols for our emotions (ex; FIRE = pain, darkness = abandonment, feeling lost.. LIght = illumination, aware, connected, understanding)
