Steve! I love your videos because your explanations are clear and precise! And unlike other vids, you actually answer the question at hand! Thanks for everything!
A very good point is made here. I recall the early writings of Dr. Kenneth Cooper, who founded aerobics. He noted that for cardiopulmonary benefits to occur from this type of exercise, it needed to be done with an intensity that raises the heartbeat and increases breathing just to the point where the exerciser is barely able to converse; faster leads to oxygen debt, and slower doesn't offer the same benefits (though is still way better than sitting in the recliner!). Good video, Steve.
What if you walk with a pair of 3kg weights in your hands on the treadmill and on the stair machine, resulting in sweat running down your forehead and into your glasses in the middle of winter? Is that low intensity or high intensity cardio?
Also my cardio usually takes a few hours and the display tells me I've done 3,000kcal in the end. That's because I go to the gym in order to watch TV on my little portable video player -- something I would otherwise do on the sofa for hours...
Hi Steve I love your no nonsense approach to fitness, I wish I could get you on Oprah as long as I get a 10% cut(Just kidding)My question is about rebounding what do you think about it? or is it worth thinking about. Thanks
Hi Steve, Im currently about 13% bf and want to get down to about 8. I weight train don't really do cardio. I was wondering if you thought its better to use the new age philosophy of high intensity interval training and full body workouts like circuit training or just cardio and diet and keep weights the same. thank you comments appreciated.
@TricepDipMan89 It's been a long time since you posted this so I hope this is still relevant. IMHO circuit training can be good for weight loss, as can cardio + weights + diet. The evidence for interval training is that it is tops for weight loss, but also comes with a higher injury rate; hamstring pulls are common with wind sprints, and people prone to joint pain can see it exaggerated due to the stress of the motion. You kind of have to pick what works best for you.
Harder will help, meaning a faster speed or greater incline. You can do both or vary it. BUT the two most important things for losing weight would be 1) eat a bit less or healthier and 2) More TIME on the treadmill. Either longer sessions or ore frequent sessions. Remember, you can break it up so you don'ty have to do it all at once. 30 minutes in the AM and 30 in the PM.
hey steve how you doing. i had a question i am 18 years old and i weigh 281 lbs i am currently going to la fitness and i go when ever i dont have work and when i get out of school. i do weight training and cardio on the same day but different muscle groups. cardio wise i go 3.7 speed and 2.0 incline and my question is should i train harder on the treadmill if i want to lose weight
Nice job! Keep doing what you're doing. You may not notice but others are. It will happen. When I relaunch my site in the next 2 weeks I'll have free exercises you can download. I'll also have downloadable audio workout files for $0.99. Remember, it just takes consistent effort, smart training and perseverance, patience and faith. Train hard!
Sure. Once warmed up MIX it up. 5 minutes of jog. 1 minute of sprinting, 5 minutes of slight incline, 5 mintues of a big incline, 5 minutes of jogging, 2 minutes of running, etc.
What would you recommend to a person like me for a cardio workout? I have a treadmill at home, and I am up for nearly anything, but I kind of want a 30 minute workout or so since I want to do it before I go to school. But just because its 30 minutes, I want it to still be intense and really burn that fat that is covering up my abs. Any ideas?
Many of those machines are not accurate. You burn about 85 calories per 15 minutes of fast walking and thats about 1 mile. So 1 hour would be about 340 calories and 4 miles. Calories burned durning weight training is difficult to determine since it's based on how hard and long you lift.
That's kind of hard especially if you're not exercising on a machine that counts calories. Walking for 15 minutes (1 mile)burns about 85 calories. I use that as a guide to measure whatever I'm doing.
Hi Steve. Are the cardiovascular machines that count the calories that you burn accurate and trust worthy? I exercise on very high levels for 45-60 minute and allegedly burn 500-700 calories. How would I accurately estimate the calories I burn when I am weight training and not using a machine that tallies it for you?
Working out at a higher intensity does burn less fat %, but it also burns way more calories - which then have you burning some fat as well. The goal is to burn those calories when losing weight, so working at a higher intensity is better overall.
"The more intense your cardio, the more fat you burn" - totally incorrect. Less intense cardiovascular exercise with a V02 uptake of 20 - 30% (walking) burns more fat than more intense exercise with 60 - 70% V02 uptake (running). Running burns blood and muscle sugar, where walking uses fat directly as a means of energy. Running does burn more calories, but so does weight lifting.
Weight lifting provides most of the stress needed for sufficient cardiovascular fitness, making cardio largely unnecessary - UNLESS you are specifically training your aerobic capacity for some fitness objective. If you're planning on running a marathon, then yes, you will need to train in aerobics a lot more frequently, and a lot more intensely. Otherwise, forget it. For more info, email me at zendreams(at)gmail(dot)com
I train three MMA fighters. They all have extensive backgrounds in weightlifting/ bodybuilding. Although all have acceptable bodyfat ranges and excellent lifting capacity they all have quite poor cardiovascular endurance. This alone makes me question the validity of your claim. Everyone needs a periodic bout of hard cardio.
Oxygen never becomes a pathway of energetics which fuels muscle contractions in martial arts. Martial arts are an anaerobic activity. If a fighter WERE using oxygen to power his muscles in a strike on his opponent, the strike would be so weak that it would do no damage due to the nature of oxidative muscle contractions. What your fighters need to focus on is anaerobic endurance through drill training. This will increase their ability to repay their oxygen debts.
Moreover, weight lifting and bodybuilding do not have the same requirements as martial arts. When switching to the new activity, the body will need time to adjust, even if the new activity is less intense and less physically demanding. They may start breathing hard which creates the illusion that more aerobic endurance is needed. In fact, more anaerobic endurance is needed, since their activity is anaerobic.
That's fine. Proper cardio is just an arobic or anarobic work out that improves the efficiancy of your vascular system. In order to get the best benifit out of your work out it's good to maintain the proper heart rate for your age and work out at a pace that your fitness level will afford you while still giving your body a challenge. So a quick walking pace is fine as long as you're pushing yourself.
Great info, as always. I know I don't do enough cardio but, when I do, I usually go the "interval training" route; Hard for a minute, back off for a minute, hard for a minute, back off, etc...
Hi Steve, love your videos. I have a question. I just recently started with a personal trainer and he told me that cardio, without equal or greater time in strength training, will burn my muscle with the calories. Is that true?
No. Once you've significantly lowered your body weight, contiued to lower your calories, and also coninued exercising at a very high rate will you lose muscle. Most people never get to that point.
Sorry big guy, no rich relatives. I've been lifting for 26 years. I've decided to back off he weights a little and go for more cardio even though I love the weights. I'm now in my 67th year. I watch all your videos. Thanks. If you do get on the radio I'll be one of your many listeners!
Hey Steve, 'nother great vid. How accurate are those calorie counters on the treadmill. I enter my weight, age and speed and get going. Tonights workout was great.. just like you mentioned in this video. Said I burned nearly 500 calories in 30 min.
I'm sure some are accurate and some aren't. To burn 100 calories in 15 minutes on a treadmill you need to be walking and running or walking at a steep incline. Use that as a point of reference.
great vid. i belong to la fitness. when i do a cardio workout i get on a tredmill thing with pedals (not sure what its called) for about 30 minutes. at the end of the workout it sais i burned like 400 calories. when i get real good at it sould i do i longer with the same resistance or the same time with more resistance?
