The younger generation needs to hear the message in this great song. I lost my Dad six years ago and will always miss him (you only get one Dad, in this world). Life is short, very short! Go spend as much time with your Dad, while you can! Thanks a trillion, Paul, for this great song and all of the great memories through the years.
I thought Paul was great on THE DONNA REED SHOW; just so natural and unaffected. And Carl Betz was like an IDEAL dad: they had great chemistry together and I believe that both were underrated performers. Betz won an Emmy for JUDD FOR THE DEFENSE.
I really thank you for this. I saw the original I was 9. I asked my mom to buy the 45 so I could give it to him for his birthday. He died in "87" So I have the 45 again. He was the best man I knew. He was always my dad, but in the last 5 years of his life he became my best friend.
such a sweet song, always refreshing to hear how children, especially sons, adore their dads.....you hear a lot about moms but not about the other parent.

@rodanvideo...I care man. I was the same age as Shelly Fabares when Paul did this song. My dad is gone now so it has even more meaning. And yup, "Oh My Pa Pa" by Eddie Fisher. This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. This is wonderful I do have to share only to my grandson who loves his dad so much. Thank you for posting this wonderful song. I BTW adored Paul Peterson on the show I could not wait to see the show every Sunday night. Great video and beautiful song with so much meaning. Hugs
I watched this episode when it first came on in the 60's. I havent heard this song since that time. Thank you for posting it. I always wanted to sing it to my dad but never got the nerve up to do it.

I can imagine the scores of parents watching this in 1962 whose eyes got misty during this scene. Even though Paul did the usual lip-sync with the record, he became very focused on the emotional aspect of the scene and actually broke down. Yes, I know he's an actor but he worked hard on that scene. They were probably inundated with fan letters for days afterwards.
@rodanvideo - remove that comment and then ban him from posting ever again.. just a stupid comment.. don't take it personally. Thanks for posting this video.
@rodanvideo Think hard rodanvidio. You did nothing wrong. All you did was post a beautiful clip about a boy expressing his deep love for his father through a song. I remember that episode from the Donna Reed Show. Not everyone had special relationships with their fathers. Some had no relationship at all and it will always be an open wound that causes much pain at times. Especially after seeing a clip like this. I think that is JunkyMcSnot's problem.
@JunkyMcSnot hey everyone...i think SpunkyMcDick died a slow painful death a few hours ago. YEAHHHHH! great song and great video RODANVIDEO. not sure what was up Spunky's butthole.
I remember watching this episode years ago on Nick at Nite with my dad. I remember it made him sad about his own father. My Dad passed away one week ago. We never got to celebrate Father's Day this year. I'm sorry I never really told you "I Love You", but ... I Love You, Dad. Happy Father's Day. Jose T Gonzalez 1943-2011
I had such a crush on Paul Peterson, and I've always loved this song by him. I'm dedicating it to all the Dads I know today for Father's Day. My own Dad died in 1986, but I still miss him.
My Dad died in 1970. He was 40 - sudden cardiac arrest. I was 15yo. I could not find any songs then - except this one. I own the 45, tracked down years back in an OLD record store. I never got the chance to thank him, or say goodbye. I was shocked to find that someone had actually posted this - it means the world - so thanks a ton!
I was just wondering, as beautiful and moving as this song is and everyone seems to remember it, does anyone remember "Oh My Papa" I think it was Mario Lanza who sang it. Yeah I know I'm dating myself but that is also a song that is a real tribute to Dads and every bit as moving and beautiful as Paul Peterson's My Dad. Just wondering.
@revtami Mario Lanza - haa, you're funny. It was sung [and made famous] by the father of the actress [in Star Wars] who played Princess Leia. Of course, a 3 second Google would tell you who. There's even a youtube clip of "him" singing "Oh My Papa."
Now, don't get all bent that I've been rude to you. I'm writing this for fun, not IN fun. I love all the people who take the time toview and comment on my clip.
@rodanvideo Thanks for the correction, now that you say his name I remember it being Eddie Fisher who sang it and recorded it first. My head was thinking about Mario Lanza for some reason and so I thought it was him, obviously I was wrong. Also, I don't believe I would have thought you were being rude if you hadn't said you were. I loved your clip and now I think I'll go see if I can find the clip of "him" singing "Oh My Papa". Thanks again.
Sometimes I really miss those days. I always like this song too and always associated it with my Dad. He's been gone for many years now but hearing this song again brought him back to me for just a little while and brought tears to my eyes. Good memory tears. Thanks for sharing this.
OMG, thank you for uploading this song! I bought this song on a 45 record when it first came out and played it for my dad when I was probably 12 years old. He loved it!! lol I came here to look for this song and didn't think I would find it on here. What a treasure. Wish everyone could have had a wonderful father like I did. He has been gone for 7 years now and life is so different without him!
this is such a wonderful song especially with Fathers Day this Sunday! I lost my Dad to cancer 13 years ago and still think of 'My Dad " everyday! Happy Fathers day to all the Dads out there!!!!!! Mike
This was my favorite song when I was a child. After I saw this episode I was in love with Paul. My mother looked all over West Palm Beach for the record of the song. She finally found it and gave it to me for Christmas. Love it and my mother.
To the writer of this song that made all young boys appreciate their dads a little more..
It certainly made this boy do so and now that I'm a dad, I wish I'd have been as good a dad as I'd have liked to be but I do have two grown children who love me and that is my greatest triumph...
I lost my Dad 11 years ago today. We played this song at his funeral. It expresses my feelings almost to a tea, except he was "much in the eyes of the world", and I was so proud to be his daughter. Thanks for posting this.
I'm "My Dad's" daughter. I lost him on New Year's eve, 2000, from this earth.....& even tho' I'm not his son, I love to play this over & over - especially on his birthday (May 17th - today) so I can remember how much he loved me & I him. I saw this program the first time it aired on TV. It was a wonderful program then, & I love watching this now - - just sayin'.

This song is wonderful! You should be proud to be related to him. There is a real problem with society today. We can't appreciate a song like this. It shows what a warped society we have come to be. Shame on us. The 50's were the best time in America when Men were REAL Men! And they were not ashamed to be like this song says. If we could get back 2 those days we would not be going to HE_ _ in a handbasket!
I remember crying at this episode as well. Sang it to Dad with my siblings at his 80th birthday party. Sadly, unknown to us, he had cancer and passed on 3 months later. Missing you and loving you with all my heart, Dad -- I love you.
I just spent a great time with my Mom on Mother's day, and now really just want the 4th of July to bypass Father's day... I don't mean to be selfish, but I don't know if I can take it......Daddy I'm missing you something AWEFUL......wishing I could turn the hands of time, that evil control time has on us. It's never enough... never...
@TheRebbbeccaful About 11 months ago, WandR4ever wrote a comment that Paul was his/her uncle. How many nieces and nephews does Paul have? Why did you feel it necessary to tell us all that you're related to him? ;-}}}

@shurtzfamily Good for you. You said it all for me! I lost my Dad when I was 8 in 1960 in a car accident. Yes I was a Daddys Girl. This song came out a year and 1/2 later and to this very day, I miss him and this song pay tribute to him for me. MY DAD was so special. I miss him to this day.
@shurtzfamily well a lot of dad's ditched their families since those good ole days and many people can't relate to having a healthy view of dear old pop. It's not their fault for being bitter and hateful about it. We have social engineering to thank for the demise of the family. It probably just seems super corny to them because they can't fathom that it was actually that way for many of us.
What a flashback; I remember this. It was from the Donna Reed Show. We were allowed to watch this show. I remember hearing Paul Petersen singing this on the program. I thought it was so sweet. Those were the days when a family could sit down to watch t.v. together and not have to be worried about the content of the program or what commercials might appear! Thank you so much for a nostalgic post.
For the past 30yrs I have lived with the guilt of killing my own father.
When I was 10YO I deliberately put a toy truck on top of the stairs after he shouted at me. My ‘plan’ worked all too well- he slipped on it, fell, hit his head on a table at the bottom & never regained consciousness. I quickly grabbed the truck & never spoke a word about what I had done.
Still, he left me a decent amount of money in trust & my life since has been OK overall, so I’m not sure what the moral is here…
So heartfelt. I watched the Donna Reed Show every week and the Stones were the family that I most identified with growing up. This song is most touching. What really impressed me watching this video now is that Jeff(Paul Petersen) is really singing and not lip syncing. Thank-you for posting.
I incorporated the first verse of this awesome tribute to Dads everywhere in a speech when I was in high school (many years ago!) and when my dad died in 2000 it was shared as part of his eulogy. Or course I am a girl (well, older woman now) but the message is just as poignant from a girl to her daddy.
A sweet song about Dads....I wish mine was still here so I could sing it to him. Thanks Mr. C for sharing it again with me. I will always think of you on Father's Day because I know how much yours meant to you too.
My father was my hero, even though he is gone he is still my hero and I love and miss him alot. The love he had for us was what made him my, hero. LadyProwler
@pippipepper Help my wife and I settle a bet. She thinks you had a high fever of at least 108 when you wrote your comment. I said I was leaning toward over medication with, probably vicodin or oxycodin. Please respond ASAP, because the winner gets a free dinner at Red Lobster.
Despite what "pippipepper" wrote, this song really hit home when my father passed away in 1999. I don't suppose my children will have any modern song to remember me by when it's my turn. Sad, really.
This is so beautiful. I really hope that I'll get to play this at my wedding and dance with my dad. :) He's everything and there's nothing more special than a loving and caring father.
The first MTV type of promos along with Rick Nelson. Someone was getting it. Yeah, the tributes here are powerful from those who have lost (me included).
petersen may not have been the world's greatest singer but who cares? delivery is so important and petersen delivered. Is it any wonder why 40+ years later this small performance touches the hearts of so many? Just look at these comments!!
I LOST MY DAD IN 2008. HE WAS THE BEST. I LOVE YOU DAD FOREVER AND EVER. YOU WERE THE BEST. I THINK ABOUT YOU EVERYDAY OF MY LIFE. I PRAY WE'LL BE TOGETHER AGAIN ONE DAY. LOVE, JUDY
I lost my Dad 10 years ago on Thanksgiving morning. I wish he was able to have his turkey dinner. But, at least he's not in pain anymore. I miss you Dad!
A woman I knew who was a big Paul Petersen fan has this as a favorite episode of the Donna Reed show-either this or the later one where he sings the song.(As a man,I liked the episodes where Shelley Fabares sang Johnny Angel a little better.Chuckle!)
This song is really a fine tribute to anybody's father.
Although I am a woman this song was always special to me because of my relationship with my dad. As a daddys girl at the age of 38 some 21 yrs ago as he lay dying from cancer I held his hand, carresed his tear streeked cheek and sang this song to him. Thank you Paul for this wonderful song. What a wonderful way to say I love and goodbuy.
I ONLY HOPE WHEN MY SON AND DAUGHTER MANY YEARS FROM KNOW.. WHEN I AM NO LONGER ON THIS PLANET.. HAVE THE PRIDE FOR ME THIS SONG PROJECTS FOR ME AS A DAD.. ITS A BEAUTIFUL THING !!!! THANKS FOR THIS UPLOAD YOU ARE DOING FATHERS EVERY WHERE A GREAT THING......
I am so lucky to still have my dad. He's 86 yrs. old and just had a pacemaker put in 3 wks. ago. He still works full time. I was worried about him for awhile. Sometimes he gets cranky but I understand that because he is old and his body is worn out. He always took care of his children. We never needed for nothing. He is my hero. Always will be and I always look up to him. Bless you for posting this. Very touching song.
I lost my Dad in Jan. 2010 and That was my Hero..he was Superman to me...Cop Truck Driver and Bike rider...unstoppable ....Cancer took a man who could do anything to a man who never woke up....I LOVE YOU DAD and I hope I am doing right in life and will never let you down...Dirty Dawg ....!948-2010 Eddie Cusimano Sr.
@gino091304 in my life, the strongest man on the planet died september 12, 2007. my dad. cancer took him, too. he was everything strong, the mountain on the horizon that gave everything perspective. where i learned the value and idea of honor. my kids and grandkids will learn what he taught me. you go, dawg. god rest your dad.
@gino091304 I am so sorry to hear about your Dads passing. I lost my Dad in1986. He was always John Wayne too me. He held me up in his strong arms and I loved him so. I will always pray that he's as proud of me as I am of him. I miss him so much. It never get's any eiser but I know he's with my Mother and Jesus, and that makes it a little easier for me and I know I'll see him someday. In his Stesten hat and his cigar we will someday walk together in God's kingdom again.
As a father..this song tears me up, literally..but it's very unrealistic..how did they get this kid to sing this?...my teenage son thinks I'm the stupidest person in the world..and "anybody that raises a teenager TODAY should not have to go to hell"...so I keep loving my teenager son and pray and dream of the day that my son sings this to me
@carpenterabc then you are probably doing it right. I swear I wished for my dad's demise many many times when I was young. Thankfully, at 83 he is still with me today. I my mother just passed and I fear for my dad every minute...but with your son, he just doesn't know yet...he knows, but doesn't know...if that makes any sense...
@carpenterabc I think parents back then had morals and scrupels, thats not to say that all parents are that way. I have seen parents who let their kids do and have anything they want. What happens, these kids think they are owed everything and when they don't get it they have a fit. They don't work for things like we used to do. I never disrepected my parents, not only out of fear but they fed me and clothed me, and gave me shelter. I was grateful for that .
how can he act the crying part so well. darn it! i had something in my eye

Just wondering.
revtami 7 months ago 3
@revtami Mario Lanza - haa, you're funny. It was sung [and made famous] by the father of the actress [in Star Wars] who played Princess Leia. Of course, a 3 second Google would tell you who. There's even a youtube clip of "him" singing "Oh My Papa."
Now, don't get all bent that I've been rude to you. I'm writing this for fun, not IN fun. I love all the people who take the time toview and comment on my clip.
rodanvideo 7 months ago
@rodanvideo Thanks for the correction, now that you say his name I remember it being Eddie Fisher who sang it and recorded it first. My head was thinking about Mario Lanza for some reason and so I thought it was him, obviously I was wrong. Also, I don't believe I would have thought you were being rude if you hadn't said you were. I loved your clip and now I think I'll go see if I can find the clip of "him" singing "Oh My Papa". Thanks again.

I miss him to this day.
venus777kelly 5 months ago
@shurtzfamily well a lot of dad's ditched their families since those good ole days and many people can't relate to having a healthy view of dear old pop. It's not their fault for being bitter and hateful about it. We have social engineering to thank for the demise of the family. It probably just seems super corny to them because they can't fathom that it was actually that way for many of us.

What a flashback; I remember this. It was from the Donna Reed Show. We were allowed to watch this show. I remember hearing Paul Petersen singing this on the program. I thought it was so sweet.

Still, he left me a decent amount of money in trust & my life since has been OK overall, so I’m not sure what the moral is here…
SuperTruth77 10 months ago
So heartfelt. I watched the Donna Reed Show every week and the Stones were the family that I most identified with growing up. This song is most touching. What really impressed me watching this video now is that Jeff(Paul Petersen) is really singing and not lip syncing. Thank-you for posting.

I incorporated the first verse of this awesome tribute to Dads everywhere in a speech when I was in high school (many years ago!) and when my dad died in 2000 it was shared as part of his eulogy. Or course I am a girl (well, older woman now) but the message is just as poignant from a girl to her daddy.

As a father..this song tears me up, literally..but it's very unrealistic..how did they get this kid to sing this?...my teenage son thinks I'm the stupidest person in the world..and "anybody that raises a teenager TODAY should not have to go to hell"...so I keep loving my teenager son and pray and dream of the day that my son sings this to me
carpenterabc 1 year ago
@carpenterabc then you are probably doing it right. I swear I wished for my dad's demise many many times when I was young. Thankfully, at 83 he is still with me today. I my mother just passed and I fear for my dad every minute...but with your son, he just doesn't know yet...he knows, but doesn't know...if that makes any sense...
phydeaux111 1 year ago
@carpenterabc I think parents back then had morals and scrupels, thats not to say that all parents are that way. I have seen parents who let their kids do and have anything they want. What happens, these kids think they are owed everything and when they don't get it they have a fit. They don't work for things like we used to do. I never disrepected my parents, not only out of fear but they fed me and clothed me, and gave me shelter. I was grateful for that .
