A file only cuts in one direction. The forward stroke is the cutting stroke then you should lift the file and start again near the tip. If you dont you will dull the file draging the file backwards. I use a battery operated dremel type tool in the field and a 110 volt at home. I keep a file with me in case I hit A rock or metal in the wood. You need A file if you have to remove alot of metal to get the edge established and then use the stone to get it rasor sharp.
Nice tutorial. I prefer the manual way when I'm at the shop 'cos I count my strokes making sure they average same number for each tooth. It's easier for balancing teeth depth. I did see one thing I have a peeve about & that is the backstroke, 3:47. For longer lasting files, I never apply pressure on the pull back. That dulls the edges of the file. I either pull it out & put back into starting position, 3:08, or if I'm in a hurry or lazy, I pull back lightly with little to no pressure.
Thanks
