When the Central Line first started using this station the westbound track was signalled for bi-directional running, as sometimes goods trains shunting in the goods yard that is now a retail park needed to use the eastbound platform track.
Of course in those days the off-peak Central Line service was much less frequent than it is nowadays.
BR diesel trains to Epping only stopped using this station in 1970, and this explains the wide gap between the train & the platform.
