benfrancis took what I was about to say: Jack in the Box brought back "Jack" in 1995 (as a person) for two reasons: The chain suffered during the 80's (do you blame them for getting suffocated by McDonald's? No way) and it went from bad to worse when in 1993, a Jack in the Box restrurant in Seattle was shut down after when a bacteria infection broke out (it made People magazine since I saw it).

They brought back Jack because they were on the verge of bankruptcy in the early 1990s after being hit by an E. coli scare.

This ad was classic. The reason why it got pulled is because of the sensativity timing. It aired at the time when the Unabomber was headline news and Jack-in-the-Box was under pressure from politically correct people who felt it inappropriate at the time.

The other motivation behind the ad was because at the time, Jack in the Box was close to bankruptcy due to some large settlements handed down to customers sickened during an outbreak of e.coli in 1993. Their stock was pounded into the dirt as a result.

The company redid its image by restoring an old mascot and 'destroying' the old management. The ad campaign was a huge gamble and it payed off handsomely.

I don't know if you been to a Jack n Box lately Eplpsy, but there food isn't that great as it was about in the early 90's when this commerical came out and they don't even have a 99c menu anymore because of the oil prices.

They didn't actually change the food as much as reinvent the image of the company. Yeah the food isn't as great but they realized it was a dead end catering to variety. Almost every ad made during the 80s advertised Jack in the Box as a 'mature' place to eat a diverse menu (egg rolls, fried shrimp, ham sandwiches). Now it's all aimed at men with unsophisticated tastes. "biggest sirloin burger ever!" By 'success' I mean the company didn't go bankrupt. And most of that lies with this ad campaign.
