I do so much miss this generation of people. They're almost all dead now. The de Havilland sisters are both in their mid nineties! Thank God for films and records. That was my grandmother's time and she and I were very close. I love the culture from those days and she gave a running commentary as we listened and watched. We owe soooo very much to this generation and I love them all dearly and cherish all of the happy memories these clips bring up.
@yennyennYaar the name of the film is "Wonder Bar" from 1934, just before the Hayes office started censoring films. That clip is featured in the documentory "The Celluloid Closet". When the two guys go dancing off, Al Jolson quips, "Well, boys will be boys!"
Fantastiic song, stupendous singer, wonderful (and very cool) video. 5.5, of course. What can one say, words can't do it justice! Thanks for posting and thank to Kristin for sharing.
to my ears this is one of the best sinatra vocals i ever heard. phrasing is just perfection. he probably knocked it out in 1 take too after a heavy night.
This is a great clip. I would like to know what the name of the movie is at 1:20. I loved the smirk on the "Singers' (that's a guess) face when the two guys danced off together and 2:24 where the girls are "trying" to look graceful. LOL!
@jgar6 I think all (or almost all) of these films are from the Pre-Code Era which is the beginning of sound (1927 or 1928) to 1934. PS this video is amazing and this song is or of my favorites sung by Frank. Not to mention one of the best by Cole Porter!
hollywood today the films r a joke theyre not well made not a matter of filth ...... but there are a few exceptions : chicago , goodnight and goodluck, and a few others
This isn't the same version as on Fallout 3. The one on Fallout 3 was the original sang by Cole Porter, who sounds a little more upbeat and silly. I must say, I love Sinatra, but Cole Porter's original is far more awesome, because the things he says are so funny if you understand the climate of society back then...and still kind of applicable to day.
I would of loved to have lived back in those days, People had so much Grace, self respect and respect for each other, And what do we have now? 2 girls 1 cup.... We suck
Excellent! Frank Sinatra singing Noel Coward lyrics with wonderful old movie clips! It doesn't get any better. The parting shot "As long as they have sidewalks you've got a job!" Priceless!
Elaine Paige sings the new version, too. Here's a video where she forgets the text at the end. Search for "Anything Goes Elaine Paige" and you can see it. Ethel Merman sings also a faster version than this.
The movie's Wonder Bar (1934), the guy in the background commenting's Al Jolson, but I have no idea who the two guys who go off dancing together are -- no one important to the overall plot.

Thank you. Yes we are proud of her. Girls Aloud are her favourites, but she is also completely familiar with music from the thirties to now. Hope to move away from Naples, Italy, next year and find her some tap classes in the States or Britain!
