  • Good vid, but music breaks are very distracting, something consistent would have been better....all hail Phar Lap!!

  • Phar Lap was an amazing horse, He belongs in the same class as the mighty Secretariat. Both of them had huge hearts which not only allowed them to run like the wind, but captured the love of many nations. RIP

  • I'm not Australian but... Phar Lap was foaled on October 4 1926 in Seadown near Timaru in the South Island of New Zealand.

  • Any Australian know where Phar lap was born?

  • Nice video! I only wish the taxidermists had done a more natural job on the mounting of Phar Lap; he looks wooden to me. ( a purist for a good job, am I)

  • has anyone been able to find this on DVD? I have the vhs but I really want the DVD soooooooooooooooo bad!!!!

  • @Levings7 What Par Lap the movie, try ebay, it should b on there.

  • Why was Phar Laps heart so large, 12and a half kilos, maybe that had something to do with the great ones death!

  • @MrDulcify it was just an abnormality. but it didn't cause his death, they prooved it was arsenic poisoning they just dont know if it was deliberate or accidental as they use to put small amounts of arsenic in their food to help their appetite.

  • @stickybeak4eva Thanks for explaining that to me, I've always wondered why trainers used to put small amounts of arsenic in their food. thanks!

  • @MrDulcify Actually it was 6.2 kg's or 13.6 pounds. It's in the top 1percentile for horses. Although Secretariat's heart was half as big again.

  • But every great champion faces the day,

When no more contenders stand in their way.

When no more mountains, exist for to move,

When finally, at last, there is nothing to prove.

R.I.P Phar Lap see you in heaven

  • whoever dislikes this is a disrespectful person to phar lap...

  • thats funny, the videos ive seen show phar lap easily winning the 1930- melbourne cup...and i mean easily!...literally playing with the field..flying past them on the back straight to 5-6 lengths lead, then letting the field come back to him, then simply cruising away again when they did to win by a long way. hardly a "battle"...

  • @rcaddict72 just terminology. every race is a battle.

  • i used to have a horse named pharlap

  • what an impessive looking horse he was a great looker my favorite of all time

  • why did phar lap become Australian ? its because his parents never won anything and no one in new zealand wanted him. That,s why hes an Australian icon, true ozzy spirit with a massive heart. This is a good tribute I like it well done.

  • phap-lap was simply the best

  • I dont even know what voyspace is? I can assure you 100% that I made this video, years ago now. It was the first video I made, and it was the first PharLap tribute or video on YouTube.

  • @stickybeak4eva Thank you for the video. Wish there were more live action clips of his racing to study. I love seeing the way a horse moves. Your photos were good for getting a look at his beautiul conformation and sheer physical beauty, however. With that build and being up there on legs like that, I would expect great things from this horse. Racing on a split hoof puts tremendous stress on the hoof. Oh well, the care given these racehorses often leaves something to be desired. Thx

  • Phar Lap is from New Zealand, why did he oh so suddenly become an Australian icon????

  • @famousfilly he was sold to australia. but i'm sick of this argument. he belonged to both. NZ bred him, but sold him here

  • he was poisoned by arsenic by US gangsters that thought Phar Lap would inflict big losses on their illegal betting scams. He haemorrhaged to death.

Burn in hell u US gangsters. an innocent horse didnt have to die just because ud lose ur precious fucking money!

  • they prooved that it was amounts of arsenic that they actually put in his feed... back then trainers fed this to their horses but didn't know the risks of it. PharLap died of arsenic poisioning due to NO ONES fault... it just built up in his system. the US didn't do it, honestly, if he had stayed in australia the same thing would have happened

  • @stickybeak4eva Maybe you best read those facts over again..., it was arsenic poisoning yes but there is far more detailed info on the matter and the proof shows he was killed by american fucking scum! PROOF is irrefutable.., evidence is suggestive.., so it is not suggested it is proven without a shadow of a doubt that he was taken out!

  • I love Phar Lap, he is a legend, a hero a winner, best of the best!

  • A lovely Video. The Pharlap Movie music soundtrack was broken in areas! Has i got something to do with copyright? Nicely done anyway.

  • Thankyou! :) I was only able to get preview examples of the sound track, so they were only 30 seconds long each, so each time it fades out then in is a totally different musical piece from the movie. Wish i had the whole soundtrack though!

  • I have the Album soundtrack on vinyl. Magnificent moving music........Check out Ebay or record stores for it. Cheers......

  • beautiful and inspirational horse

ive only heard of him once before but he sounds amazing

    very sad death

i hope he is having a great time in heaven

  • It's conclusive as of 2009: Phae Lap died of arsenic poisoning.

How he was poisoned remains, however, a mystery.

  • Hmm, I don't believe the ilness that killed Phar Lap is unknown today. Think they said it was a high dose of Arsenic, because of too much Fowler's Solution which had it as an ingredient.

  • I think that's the solution they're coming to now. Haven't heard anything about it for a while but arsonic poisoning was the last i heard

  • ur an idiot. anyone who talks about shooting horses is a dikhead and i dispise them. You must be a very low person to talk about things like that. I'm sorry but if there's one thing I hate and can not STAND its people talking about shooting horses. Grow up and get a heart you moron!

  • I agree with you, I would go burn their house down and then they can go to hell and burn there some more!

  • Hey dumb ass 1st of all, you win. I hate you. You're a pathetic waste of oxygen. 2nd of all, if you really want to get tech. horses are made into dogfood and glue. Hot Dogs are made from the lips and assholes of unfortunate cows & pigs who I'm certain are more intelligent than you, and piano keys were typically made from ivory (aka, the tusks of elephants). So why don't you go do another bong hit, rob a convenience store & smack around your girlfriend a little more you ignorant moron. dumb ass

  • You better hope I never find you!

  • heres my adress 872 middle country rr, St james , NY 11780. now you know where to find me and come anythime between 12-4 on the afternoom thats when asm free so...... do something about it

  • I got a plane ticket muther fucker! But you're not worth my breath!

  • i never seen it but i would like yo, kould someone plz copy it to youtube,

    manny thanks!!!!!!

  • If I had a dvd burner i would. but our computer is old school :P haha

  • Where did you get the music from the movie Phar Lap? Have you seen the movie? Itßs a great movie! And I watch it every week!^^

  • Yeh I got it on DVD :) and before that I had it on VHS. I downloaded the music from the internet but i don't remember what site because it was so long ago. You could try Limewire maybe ???

  • Great video for a great champion! He´s poisoned in America, I think! It´s the truth and I want to say: If I would meat these person, who did it, oh god, I would kill them slow and bad! : (

    Phar Lap we love you!

  • thanks for the comment :) this was my first vid... if i was gonna remake it it would be so much better now!

  • im naked ;D g

  • great movie it was easy to read and it helped me with my project thank a lot.i would rate it 100/100 its that good. Great job. and keep up the good efort.

  • Thanks! and I'm glad it was able to help you with your project! :D (GREAT project topic by the way :P ) When I was in year 4 I had to do a project on a certain time period in austrain history... i chose the 20s - 40s just so i could talk about Pharlap :P I've got a book about him to, has records of all his races and EVERYTHING! You might find it handy. It's called Phar Lap and its by Geoff Armstrong and Peter Thompson. cost me $35 about 6 years ago, should be cheaper now :P

  • No he wouldn't still be alive if he had of stayed in New Zealand! How old are you? Phar Lap lived in the 30's I do agree that he was a great horse though, but you need to maybe do a little more research.

  • ya he is died he was posended!

  • he wasnt poisoned -.-

he died of a virus. Experts claimed that.

  • Actually I just recived a Horse Illustrated magazine last week and they said in there that it has been scientificly proven that Phar Lap died from lead arsenic poisoning.

  • Yes, I just read that he died of arsenic poisoning. It was confirmed this Thursday when scientist "took six hairs from Phar Lap's mane and analyzed them at the Advanced Photon Source Synchrotron in Chicago, finding that in the 40 hours before Phar Lap's death the horse had ingested a massive dose of arsenic."

  • yeh back in those days they gave horses amounts of arsenic to help them keep their apetites up... they didn't know what the affects would have. the intense build up eventually poisoned pharlap

  • no he actually got a large dose for some unknown reason 30 to 40 hours before death.

  • Giddy 'up

  • i hope u iz in horsey heaven Phar lap... i hope u iz!

  • i care wea he w0z born and bred coz daz y he such a good racehorse! nd i kno dat peepz owt dere recognise phar lap as a NEW ZEALAND horse...not australian... NEW ZEALAND!!!

MIGHTY TIMARU got phar lap all da way... just coz hes an animal... dont mean dat he dnt kno wea hiz home iz... NEW ZEALAND! do i hav to say it a gen? NEW ZEALAND. Just coz we be a small country... dont mean u cn neglect us coz we b famous 4 many things! and az 4 u howzathumdinger or wateva, go get .... all nzerz r legends

  • That was very hard to read..

  • Have you seen the movie? I don't belive he was treated very well in New Zealand.

  • well he'd still be alive if he HAD stayed in new zealand

  • whether people think he was new zealand or not, he was stil a champion.

  • Scientist looked at his mane DNA and found he was poisened, and also his hear t was only 6.3kg and then later when Seattle Slew died the weighed his heart and his was 6.9kg wich is almost 22 pounds

  • well it was the largest at the time... we just gotta remember tht

  • Great video! But I heard Phar Lap was poisoned?

  • thankyou!

you heard right. they're still trying to proove it tho

  • Who cares where he was bred because he is a world icon!!

    It's the horse business here.

To sort this out,HE WAS A LEGEND TO BOTH NATIONS!!

    Good Video!

  • thanks :)

  • No problems!

  • Yes. I agree with that. Although he was born and bred in New Zealand, he was associated for many years with the Australian racing scene, and was a legend in both countries.

  • But anyway... can we just stop fighting over this topic? This is meant to be a tribute to the champion, not a debate over who has their facts straight. Doesn't Phar Lap deserve a little peace?

  • didn't want to 'try'? what are you - a horse psychologist? NZ bred = NZ horse, Britsh bred = british horse. Are all the athletes who competed at the Sydney Olympics now Australian icons? Just because Efficient won Melb cup and Sunline Aust Cox plate doesn't make them Australian.

  • no one has said that. Phar Lap was raced and lived in Australia. If a horse was born here and then sold to another country... no matter how famous they became... they would be the icon of the country they lived in. ONE race or a couple races doesn't change a thing. but Pharlap lived in Australia and saved MANY people during the Depression. That's y he's an icon to our country.

  • kenshika he is an aussie icon because you did not want phar lap u let him get to a state where he didnt want to try anymore Australia bought him and fixed him up good we trained him and gave him a happy for filling life Just because he was born in Nz doesnt mean a thing It's not australias fault that you did not want him...it just to bad Nz cant see a good horse when one comes by Don't try and claim a horse they you did nothing but hurt it and left it to die.

    GREAT VIDEO!

  • How can you say NZ left Phar Lap in a state and we left him to die??? He was only 2 yrs old and had never raced, fair enough Australia brought him from NZ and trained him but NZ did breed this horse and like most other great racehorses they are usually bred in NZ and race in Australia. Sorry but its true, maybe you should do research before commenting on something you have absolutley no idea about.

  • thanks :)

  • it was proven that he was poisned by the yanks because they couldnt stand losing to him.

  • So what exactly makes him an 'Aussie' icon? He's a NZ horse

  • he was an aussie icon coz in NZ he wasn't looked upon as a 'healthy' horse so to say.. and then Haryy Telford got him and raced him in Australia becoz he knew he had potential. yes he was bred in NZ but he was raced in Australia... just like Makybe Diva wasn't bred in australia but she's still an aussie icon too

  • He was Poisened by arsnic.

Because the yanks couldnt face losing to himm.

Fair enough.Phar Lap was the best of the best

  • Thanks for posting this,Im obsessed with all things Phar Lap related, after watching the film over 20 years ago.I howled my way through it, & have continued to do so everytime I watch it! :( The music in the film is superb, & I (eventually) managed to get a hold of a copy of it, its by Bruce Rowland, & is pretty easy to find if you Google it if anyone is interested!

  • thanks for that information! i've been trying to find the full music... i was only able to find the samples (which i used for this movie) thts y al lthe music is so short. thankyou everyone for ur comments!

  • what a champion.. who ever killed that beautiful animal must not have any feelings... nor a soul, shame on hu ever did it... he wasnt just a horse, he was the best...

  • May the killer be forever hunted

  • awesome tribute :) almost made me cry to watch this and listen to and the band played waltzing matilda at the same time, wonderful video.

    Rest In Peace Phar Lap

  • i didn;t know they stuffed his body!

  • Wow his is cool it makes me cry thinking of phar lap though

  • sorry! I didn't mean to make you cry. But it was a sad thing that happened to him. Thankyou for your comment

  • WOW!!! I love it... x

  • thankyou! I'm glad you enjoyed it :D

  • did u know that they found out he was druged

  • that was AMAZING. Bobby was a Hero .thanks for doing such a tribute

  • thankyou!

  • thankyou all for your comments!

Yes, Pharlap was practically unbeatable. But in those days they used to feed the horses a special mixture to keep up their appetite, and there was arsenic in it. It doesn't affect them at first, but it builds up over time. So it was all a mistake, it was never on purpose. Thankyou all again

  • I'd love the soundtrack to this film, you can't get it anywhere but the film is pretty easy to get hold of. I've seen someone selling the CD soundtrack for $199 on Ebay, yes $199 not $1.99.

  • on level weights i wonder what horse could have got the better of him...maybe secretariat would have given him a race but he was lightly raced and trained in better times..i doubt he had to carry the killer weights phar lap did or have his range..

  • i believe from the time his strapper woodcock really started handling him. he was trained to a pulp by an average trainer early on and treated badly until the strapper looked after him.once he was handled well and cared for he was virtually unbeaten over every distance and weight they loaded him up. I think the only thing that stopped him in a race or two was the ridiculouse weight which no horse could handle.he was practically unbeatable .

  • Always makes me cry when ever i see anything to do with Pharlap. This tribute is lovely.

He was an amazing horse. "Rest in peace Pharlap", you deserve it x

  • Phar finished last in his first ever start and didnt place in his next 3, he then won a maided. Wasnt as slow a start as the film suggested but he didnt hit the ground running.

    cheers

  • i thought Pharlap was a nice looking horse i work at a place where we have horses that are huge and i like to call one pharlap all though hes a standardbred but his hieght and his nature reminds me of him.

  • the best , probably in any country of all time, every distance, nearly every weight they could put on him, then blitzed the worlds best in mexico before the mob most likely poisoned him in fear....hed have taken sea biscuit and manowar and made mince meat out of them....he loved winning and loved the crowd...and tried his heart out everytime

  • I agree with ALL that. I knew a horse who had Manowar in his bloodlines and I lOVED that horse with all my heart...but i still NEVER doubt the heart and spirit or Pharlap and his skill at racing. He truly was a champion of the world.

  • the best horse is makybe diva

  • Yes Makybe Diva is a great horse, and in your eyes she may be the greatest, i know i love her too...but think about this: Pharlap gave people a hope to look for in the Great Depression. That's the main reason why he's so special to so many people.

  • both judgements may be correct in a way, but on the news the other day they told that it WAS arsenic that had poisoned him, but they are still unsure about whether he was killed on pupose or whether it was a mistake of Tommy's from adding other food into his diet to keep him eating. thanx 4 ur comments :)

  • Woodcock did really 'admit' to anything however giving racehorses a 'milkshake' to improve performance was extremely common. Woodcock says it's very possible that he gave the horse a possibly lethal dose.

  • He never said any such thing. And know one knows and will ever know what killed the horse, Tommy Woodcock never said it was possible he did anything wrong. Anyone who knows anything about Tommy Woodcock knows he was one of the greatest horsemen this countries ever seen.

  • And also that gangster had fed him a large amount of arsenic at one point which caused the horse to b in great pain

  • Tommy claimed on his death bed, he killed Phar Lap, giving him a drug to make hm run faster. That drug, is what is now beleived, to have killed him.

  • where did you hear that bullocks from about woodcock drugging the pharlap..cmon...i dont think so. um why would he need to run faster..hahahah..he was unbeatable..and had a hoof infection in mexico and still won

  • When he sucked, they gave him drugs, and thats what made him better.

Thats what Tommy said in an interview, I got it from the bloodhorse

  • he never sucked though hahahaha...when exactly did he lose besides his last melb cup run which they say was so dangerous a weight it could of killed a horse over that distance

  • What about those 7 other times when he was out of the money?

  • I don't know, I was under the impression that he was the only one close to him that really loved him...or I like to think so since Phar Lap trusted him so much.

Who knows what really happened, regardless he was the best and I hope he is in a better place now:)

  • Wow, I didn't know that about Tommy claiming that his actions were what killed Phar Lap. That is really sad, it must have been very hard for him to carry that with him for all those years because he loved him very much. Phar Lap is one of the all time greats and my personal favorite. I like to think that all the greats are running alongside one another in heaven...wouldn't that be a great sight to see!!!

  • It would be such a great sight...so many of them together.

  • He never claimed anything about giving the horse any type of drug that may have affected him. Alot of media over the years since his death have made different types of claims blaming him and its disgraceful.

  • Good video, Great horse, but god was he freakish looking, long, lanky, with a titchy head, but had a good long stride and was very talented and i guess thats more important then looks

  • Thankyou both for your wonderful comments. Pharlap's heart weighed 14 lbs.

My friend told me that it made her cry too. I was crying just MAKING it!

  • I've recently added Phar Lap to my 'research' list. I picked up a copy of Michael Wilkinson's book to read the story from an Aussie point of view. Had it sent over from Oz, since it's not available in the States. Maybe someday I'll have a song and can do a video on Bobby similar to some of the others I've posted.

  • That would be great! There's only two vids of Pharlap on YOu Tube, atleast i think...there weren't ANY when i put min eon here...SO GOOD LUCK!

  • The reason that Phar Lap is considered the greatest racehorse ever was the fact that he won 4 group 1 races in 8 days from 1200m to 2 miles. Makybe Diva's record was amazing but mares are always handicapped less. Phar Lap's record will never be emulated.

There is a common misconcpetion about Phar Lap though. The movie made about him makes out that he was at first no good. This is a fallacy. From the time that he first stepped onto the track everyone associated with him knew he was a freak.

  • this video is amezing i love it soo much i love pharlap and movie about him, every time i watch it made me cry!

  • Australia's own "Big Red" stood 17.1 hands.

But how much did his heart weigh?

  • your welcome and thankyou also. I tink his nickname was so cute!

  • Lovely to see a tribute to 'Bobby' - thanks very much! He was truly the greatest of them all.

  • ok, i just know that at the time his was biggest, it prob would hav changed by now, i mean Pharlap was in the 1920's and 30's so I wouldn't b surprised. Wat i ment in the movie was that then it was biggest, i will admit tho that i didn't now Secretariats was bigger

  • Phar Lap does not have the largest heart recorded. Secretariat's was 22 lbs, while Phar Lap's was only 14 lbs. However, that is still considered a large heart and his impressive record proves it. Just setting the record straight. I have heard that there is a mare who had an even larger heart than Secretariat, but don't remember her name right now.

  • Thankyou! : )

  • I belive he had the cracked foot in the melbourne. but im not sure. but we think so. but great job.

  • He had a foot problem that started well before he went to the states. The problem was exaserbated in Mexico by the fact that there were dirt tracks that he wasn't used to.

  • Your welcome! :) I had been looking for something about him on here too and couldn't find anything, so I decided to make one myself. I felt that he deserves something dedicated to him, since he was such a great horse. And i agree, he won't ever be forgotten. THANKYOU! :)

  • Thank you for putting this on here, I have been lookn for something about him on here!! You have a few photo's I don't think I have seen. He truely was an amazing animal. He won't ever be forgotten.
