  • but these changing winds can blow cold and hostile...

  • 25 years ago this month, I travelled west with my parents to see Expo 86. It was such a beautiful experience, one which put Vancouver on the map!

  • Damn my grandpa got to go to Expo 86.That sucks I wish I was born in 1970 something so I can see it =(

Fuck to bad you cannot turn back time

  • This was back when Vancouver was a wealthy, clean city. Now it's a shithole of poverty, drug abuse, crime, homelessness.

  • @Shukria123 There was still drug abuse, crime, homelessness, and poverty in 1986. Just not as much.

  • i like this cus there's no angry persians or asians:(

  • I remember going to Expo 86. I was 11 and my parents bought season passes. I think we still have them as a keepsake. They took your picture so it was like a drivers license. My parents used to have me be out of school for the days that we went as there were smaller crowds there during school hours.

  • Great trailer man!! going to download this in downloadmusic .im

  • I have found memories of visiting Expo 86. I wish I had a time machine and go back to this event.

  • Me and most of my schoolmates had just turned 17, when Expo rolled into town... The first couple of weeks were the Best! The weather was raining (go figure in Yvr? LoL!)...but the rides were easy to get on! Rush played the Pacific Coliseum on May 17th...and it wasn't long after,,,, The Sun Shone Bright! right through to October, when Expo finally closed its' doors! Expo 86 was Brilliant! Hats off to Jim Pattison, the Socreds and Everyone who had a part working on it, or in it!

  • Wow I was 13 years old when this happened and It was the best summer ever. Met kids from all over the world there. I wish all of us kids at that fair didnt have parents that were always ruining the fun kinda. I wish I could of been 17 at the time of this fair but never the less it was a blast for my friends and family that call Vancouver home.

  • Dude, the music.

    I love it, it's so stereotypically 80's

  • Pt II- Though I knew someone who attended the EXPO the following year and said it was very expensive, and that you needed roller skates (or better yet, a golf cart) to get around. Supposedly, the EXPO people laid out the entire fair all over the city, as opposed to consolidating it in one area, making it difficult to easily walk from one event to another.

  • Wow, thank you so much! I was there when I was young. I also went to Aichi Expo and now going to Shanghai Expo 2010!

  • I remember this like it was yesterday. The Skytrain was new and clean, not yet crime ridden. The Expo site False Creak was fresh and not left abandoned for many years. This really started to Put Vancouver on the map.

  • First of all, I live in Vancouver. Was Expo '86 alot of fun? I went there once or a couple of times but I was only 7, so I was too young to understand what it truly was. All I remember seeing are dragonboats, monorail, largest ice hockey stick and all these different attractions. But for the 2010 Olympics, I was old enough too understand what it is.

  • i miss Vancouver !

  • Oh my god. This is hilarious. I love the 80's club music near the beginning...sounds like Divine and the Living On Video cowgirl cheerleaders at the end. Also the Canada rainbow emblum. I worked in theYellow section of the fair, a lot of fun. This is where the parachute drop and the Ramses Egyptian Pavillion were located. We used to go party at the old Tommy Africa's under the Granville St. Bridge after work.

  • I remember feeling a bit depressed that several of my friends were working at the USA and CN Pavilion and I was working at a boring job in Surrey. It felt like I was missing out on all the action at times. However, I lived in Kitsilano and would ride my bike around the city at night which was great. The city was in overdrive and electric. People from all over the world, parties and fireworks every night. You couldn't beat it!

  • We had the Expo now we have the Olympics =)

  • lol cool! i went to Expo 86 as a kid, i bought a huge stuffed Expo Ernie, i still have it stored in a bag in my basement! I remember how awesome he was! The Olympics are going to be awesome! I can't think of a more beautiful city to host them, there are always going to be crybabies over money, i lived in Vancouver for 4 years, it doesn't rain there all the time like dumb people think.

  • i was 14 at expo 86 around august i went

went on the scream machine and the holding bar popped open nearly fell out..

  • I worked in a restaurant at EXPO 86. I was 19 years old and had a blast for the entire 6 months. Also, I got to use my employee pass to get free admission into the site and to any pavilion. I saw every pavilion, sight, event, etc. during the 6 months of Expo. Great memories!

  • I love the totally 80's music. I wasn't alive for this, but my parents had a really cool poster so I put it in my room. :)

Hopefully the Olympics will be successful! :D

  • It would sound sooooooo wrong if the skytrain didn't have that "climbing engine" sound.

  • expo rocked we had season passes i was 8

  • The opening pass over the mountain peak and the pan to the city is similar to the olympic ads. Gee, I wonder where the 2010 guys got that idea?

  • i wasn't born yet but if i was i would go.

  • I remember all the uproar of how much it would cost.....haha !! Now we have the 2010 Winter Olympics.... with a new wave of whiners complaining of costs....haha !! and the wheels on the bus go round and round!! All I can say is this, it is now the land for the rich only due large in part to Expo 86, it will only get worse with the Olympics, unless people finally get to see that it rains here 8 months/year

  • It doesnt rain 8 months out of the year you DUMB ASS..Get your fact straight before you post anything....How do you know its going to get worse its only 2 weeks you idiot!!!!!....

  • Hey, obviously you don't live here, but you would like it, as all the rain would keep the shit off your nose, you trolling republican brown noser.

  • But the Olympics are gay.

  • yeah

  • wow.....thx for posting this! oh man....worth watching! i wasnt even born yet hahaha

  • Very interesting, thanks for posting this nostalgic look at our city. It sure has changed a lot... And the dance gig at 9:21 was hilarious :)

  • I remember this... I was actually there @ the opening ceremony in presence with Princess DIana and Prince Charles. I was one of the selected ones to perform by my elementary school teacher. I MISS THOSE DAYS! I LOVE Vancouver so much... I wish it was like before.. everyone seem to be more friendlier back then... there's too much violence these days here... I don't like it!!!

  • @rlai2201 I remember this too. Vancouver was a better place back then.

  • @rlai2201 I remember this too. Vancouver was a better place back then.

  • thank you so much for uploading. really appreciate it =]

  • I loved Expo but I hated what it did to this city.

I wish the foreigners who came here to visit Vancouver in 86 left... instead... our city is too crowded now.

  • I was there too and had a great time. I love World's Fairs!

  • Wow i was 4 yo lol but i remember it

  • HA! I also was 4 yearold old when my parents took me there. I wish I would have remembered something.

  • i remember going to Expo with my dad, i was only 8 yrs old, i still have the little passport thing you got when you entered the fair grounds.God i miss those days...

  • man i wish i was alive to witness this

  • This was a frequent shooting location for the 1986 NBC Show "Stingray".

  • Cool

  • Wow, just wow. The most striking thing about this video is how much downtown Vancouver has changed.

Everything seen here has been replaced by identical residential condos... I live a 5 minute walk to Canada Place so I'm guilty of this, but it sucks to see how much our city has changed, and it will only get worse with the Olympics.

  • Di doesn't look happy because mulrooney is boring the hell out of her!!!!

  • Loved Expo.

The music here is way 80s. Princess Di does NOT look happy.

  • I was 17 years old then, 19 was the drinking age, but never stopped me from boozing up! i was drunk all the time,i wlked wright in price charles and Lady di, i remeber saying"Take off Hoser! wow Memoeries! :-)

  • This brings back memories, I think this is the very same video I have on beta format, I wish I could find a DVD format of it. I went to Expo at least 100+ times over the 6 months.

  • i remember my first job was at expo 86 working in a restaurant. needless to say that i just worked there for a free pass and goofed off as much as i can. i was there opening day and 'saw' princess di on the alrt (as it was called before skytrain). she was stunningly beautiful!

  • I worked in the Commissioner General's Suite under Patrick Reid, the Commissioner of the Exposition. It was the greatest year of my life. I met so many people from all around the world. I'd love to be in touch with others who worked there!!

  • Was born half a year after it ended.... I wish I was around for it! Vancouver = one of the coolest cities in ze world!

  • best thing ever in vancouver , was 11 yrs old when it came and most memorable moment was watching tony hawk , steve caballero and justin hosoi rip up the ramp at the skateboard jamboree. Great memories wish vancouver was still like that back then..

  • Cool I was not born in 1986 i was born in 1989

  • I hope Expo comes back to Vancouver in 2016. Why did it go out of business?

  • Expo '86 didnt go out of business. Expo '86 was a 6 month scheduled worlds fair. There is one held every few years in different cities around the world. For Example : Expo '82 in Knoxville, USA - Expo '84 In New Orleans, Expo '85 in Japan, Expo 86 in Vancouver, Expo 88 in Brisbane, Austrailia etc. The next worlds fair is in Spain in 2008.

  • @Sonicwolf359 just saw this thing about world fair . i was there too .....am wondering is orionpirates real ??

  • @Sonicwolf359 ...and as it's been 3 years since this post, I'll add that Expo 2010 was in Shanghai, Expo 2012 will be in Yeosu (South Korea), and Expo 2015 will be in Milan. Cities are in the process of starting bids for Expo 2017 and Expo 2020 right now.

  • @orionpirates in 2016, we'll still be paying off our debt from the 2010 Olympics.

  • @orionpirates If you're lucky it might come back in 2036 or you might have to wait until 2086. Expo 86 was basically fair to celebrate Vancouver's 100th birthday, much like other World's Fairs.

The reason I say maybe 2036 is because it's bi-centennial which would be Vancouver's 150th birthday. Even then I'm not sure if they would hold such an event for this.

  • i wasant even born yet!!!

  • Wow, this is incredible, I was at the ripe old age of 2 1/2 when Expo 86 started, and in those days, I lived up in the Okanagan Valley.

Thank you for sharing this =)

  • 20 years old here and my family had a season's pass...we saw every damn pavilion!! It was worth it though.

  • oh the good ol' days of 86
