If the Tails Doll was real, I would do the curse, beat him up, and the Tails Doll will turn sad when his little crystal is blue. When the Tails Doll is happy, his crystal turns green.

That spoof commercial is quite a bit unfair. Sonic did kind of lose it as time went by, but I don't think that was predestined. The series did improve a bit with Sonic Adventure 2, and the Dreamcast itself was actually a very advanced console, pioneering many modern traditions like Internet functionality.
