Well, looks like im the first to give you a Positive response to this one Darth. I don't think anyone has a right to comment until they have actually built one themselves, so Well Done. Looks nice, doubtless ul get better range & power the more development you do. One point re Tim & Glims little spat, its very likely that Darths bike is Direct Drive (not shaft obviously) the large rear cog will allow for greater torque from a smaller motor, as a result increase the range.
kudos, darth! i think tim and gil are using 2 slightly different definitions for "direct drive". tim seems to take it to mean the motor is in the hub of the wheel. gil seems to take it to mean there is no gearbox. most of what i have read, including the wikipedia article on "direct drive mechanism", makes me think tim's definition is the more strictly correct definition, as the chain itself is a reduction.
Nope! Its Chain Drive. Not Direct Drive. You are thinking of a transmission not existing.
The chain and the gears are what is making all that noise. Sounds like shit! Too tight or something. And the Rear Sprocket is way out of line with the wheel. Looks like its bent. If you cant see that and say this bike looks like direct drive then I don't know what you are looking at.
I am not thinking that a transmission doesn't exist, I am positive that it doesn't exist. No transmission, therefore no gears to switch into. It is a single speed. If you cannot see that you are the one who is confused.
In the electric vehicle world this is referred to as direct drive (whether that is correct terminology or not is besides the point).. You say he needs to shift, or why didn't he shift , or something else equally as stupid.
I said the driver couldn't shift to another gear and that it was slow. That was my comment. How is that stupid? Obviously you are. If there is no transmision then that would be why but it does not show that in the video nor say it in the description.
I am right. It is chain drive not direct drive. The drive wheel would be on the motor shaft for it to be direct drive 1:1. This has a pinion and sprocket. You can change gears on it so you are wrong.
Its not as noisy as the video indicates - the mic is pretty sensitive, and again the noise is really due to the tiny front cog. I'm also thinking the lack of motormounts and hollow tank add to the acoustic mix.
A belt drive would be cool if the donor bike has one, but I read they are more inefficient than chains. Also, the available gearing ratios might be limited, I am not sure what sizes belt parts come in...
Good for you! There was a Dutch car called the DAF or DAP something like that(I think) that had a transmission the varies according to the speed. I heard it is also used in snowmobiles. It is also belt driven. There is also a motor that can also be used as a generator. so when you are coasting or going down hill you charge the batteries. I was going to add a flywheel so when the bike is stopped the flywheel charges the battery.
Nice, but use a tripod if you can next time. Also, I was wondering if it would be possible to use dual belt drive system to eliminate chain noise? Any ideas on that? Most videos I notice the chain noise. This bike is cool! I like it very much. The fairing also hides the componants too. Way nice! Mike.
i like it. But Can you tell us about autonomy of movement, speed, power and torque?
Weight and its distribution?
I think it would be better to put an additional pinion/sprocket to reduce the final sprocket and use belt drive INSTEAD OF chain.

Cool. It´s a shame that only motorcycles with fairings can look unmodified while secretly packing a brushless motor.

Yes, its single speed, using a chain.

Love electric bike conversions. It would be nice to see a video with the fairings off and you walking us through the components you used : )

look at 1:20 it looks like the rear sproket is about to fall off!

Weak motor output in this video. Slow, the driver couldn't shift to a higher gear.
timrocket2008 3 years ago
What higher gear? This bike is direct drive...there are no gears.
gilimi69 3 years ago
Wrong. This Bike is Not direct drive. It is clearly Chain drive. It has 2 gears called Pinion and Sprocket.
timrocket2008 3 years ago 2
Looks like this bike is direct drive to me. I stand by my original statement. There is no way to shift into something that does not exist.
Nice bike darthracing. What kind of range can you get on 1 charge?

No, lots of ballast to hold it down :)

i like the idea of some noise cuz it just seems safer, around other cars etc...i can't believe this was done on a zx series. AWESOME

Plenty of spooky chain noise for the peds. People in the cage can't hear your screams :)

If the chain makes that much noise then I think I will go with belt drive when I do mine! Nice bike!

What's the acceleration and top speed like?
ant1g3n 3 years ago
40 mph top speed, acceleration to 30+ is very quick because the gearing is low.
I am about to boost the voltage AND I just got a 13 tooth front sproket - the combo should get me well over 50 and/or burning up the motor.
darthracing 3 years ago
45 mph top speed btw, old info above.

Have to give you a thumbs up for giving it a go mate. Did you manage to incorporate regenerative braking into it?? Keep it up

Yes on the tripod, this was shot in literally 5 minutes on 1 minute notice. Cameraperson was shivering reportedly.
Belts might be cool, I have not checked into the necessary pulley's/parts. No need for dual belt, its direct drive.
Yes, the fairing hides all :) Fools people when I ask them to tell me whats up with the bike.
