Wonderful video, especially the history bits. Didn't know about the pre-Consumers history of the Dam. Now that it has been gone for a few years the river has healed itself nicely and the fast section to Low Bridge has extended and intensified a little. Unless you really look/know, it is hard to see where it was now. I have a few clips of the Pine on my channel too.
@1stsmosh This video is of the Pine River up in Manistee county, north of Baldwin and US 10, Michigan. The Pine River you are talking about is in St. Louis, MI. Two completely different rivers.
@lindbladet The Pine is rated 1-2. It can vary a bit though water levels are fairly stable being spring fed. The book "Canoeing Michigan Rivers" by Jerry Dennis and Craig Date is highly recommended.
I've done the Sturgeon 4 times from Wolverine, and even the upper part. It's better than most, but the Pine R. is the best in the state. Done that for over 30 years. Go from Dobson to Low. That works the best. My group does it in about 5 hours total. This year, we are going on August 8th. Get kayaks from Bosman's. They are great.
STAY AWAY FROM THE PINE RIVER!!! a company called VELSICOL, which was shut down 30 yrs ago, STILL has Chlordane and DDT runoffs into that river! both are linked to devastating cancers! GOOGLE VELSICOL !!!
You have this river confused with a river by the same name near Alma, Michigan. There are several rivers and streams in Michigan named "Pine". The one in this video is NOT the one you are referring to.
The Pine is actually 38 miles long, not 23. I have paddled it for over 30 years. January is the only month I have not done the trip from Peterson Bridge to Low Bridge. Stronach Dam has been gone for about 4 years and there is now the best rapids on the river just upstream from where the dam used to be. I have also paddled the Sturgeon, and in my opinion, it is a little faster than the Pine and narrower. But the Pine is more remote and the Sturgeon can't compare with the beauty of the Pine.
The Sturgeon is supposed to be faster, I've never paddled it yet but my friend said the Pine was more challenging. Me and a big group do the Pine every July and camp in the forest and drink much beer.
@BuStFaCe The Sturgeon is faster, and has an eighty percent tip rate! But it is a far less interesting float both in terms of canoeing and especially scenery. It is a fast narrow channel with few rapids, you end up ramming your canoe head on into the banks on the tight bends. Go all the way into Burt lake for a nice swim after a stressful run. The nearby Pigeon is also nice, though access is difficult for it's fast stretches. The Pine is A1, but going to Baldwin for permits is a hassle.
have u ever run the sturgeon river from wolverine michigan to indian river michigan was wondering if the pine was as fast. we were going to check out the jorden this summer to

Glad you enjoyed it. The Pine is my all time second most favorite river, after the Wolf in Wisconsin
lindbladet 8 months ago
@lindbladet I REALLY want to do the Wolf. Someday...

Nice , I really like this Video, thanks for making it. I still try to paddle up the shoot at Peterson bridge. You can make it if you do it just right

It might, but I am a little skeptical, a strong class II for sure.

Both rivers are great paddles, but I would rate the pine a little faster
