Very few of us who are christian truly display the nature of Jesus Christ.Bonhoeffer knew him intimately and loved and obeyed him without excuse. He didnt consider himself at all special. His Letters from Prison are vividly transparent.A worthy and humbling read.
Even as an atheist, I must believe that Deitrich Bonhoeffer was one of the great heroes of humankind. There was no more courageous a person to have walked the earth.
Der Furher had an atrophied testicle. According to his Nuremburg laws he himself was defective and should have gone up the chimney. Its also long rumored that he had a Jewish great grandfather. Off to the ovens, Adolph!!
With all due respect, what does being white have to do with anything? Nobody has a choice in his or her given race. What Dietrich Bonhoeffer did was most certainly a choice . A choice to do the right thing. Isn't it possible for people that are not white to do the right thing? Everyone knows that it is. So how exactly does race factor in? The good and bad deeds we humans commit are motivated by good and bad hearts. Not by our given race. Why should we be proud or ashamed of what color we are ?
Considering everyone who wasn't white was persecuted and therefore in no position to do what he did, this is a very biased point of view. It's like saying cultivating maize/corn shows what's good about being Native American. Never mind no one else had the chance, because it only grows in the Americas.
@afeeder Which white are you referring too?...lol. The Irish are white...and were severely pursecuted...lots of whites were persecuted...but what I love most is how white is just white...not Irish, German, Danish, Scottish, British etc... How biased is that? ...and the fact that he was in the position he was in and gave up everything to stand against tyranny makes him more man than most. (..of any nationality.)
@witepried I can't imagine where to start with what is wrong in that statement. Do not turn Bonhoeffer into a idol for racist idealology. Bonhoeffer worked with African American seminarians in Harlem and taught at African American Sunday Schools in America. He even brought African American Gospel music back to Germany with him. When offered a higher position in the church under the Nazis, he refused it because of its racist policy of not posting non-Aryans to any positions in the church.
I recently learned about Mr. Bonhoeffer and I admire his courage for speaking out against something that was then being viewed as popular, veiling the evil behind an evil man. For him to speak out made him a hero to many when the global community was silent
You should read Bonhoeffer's writings then, he didn't exactly speak out on television against A.H. This is a clip from a documentary about Bonhoeffer.
@firstrunfeaturesnyc Didn't know that. I have just heard about him and would love to read about him. I have always wanted to read some of his writings. I have heard that his book 'The Cost of Discipleship' has some of the best of his thought. I surely will check that out. Thank you.
God grant that we each become as Bonhoeffer...standing against the Evil in this Present Age...as Christians one is to be 'litte Christs'--allowing Jesus Christ to Live Thru us, and as Bonhoeffer did Speak Out, Stand Against Evil wherever we see it!!
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places]. Ephesians 6:12
The Nazi legacy lives on today. "The answer to the German question" was unbelievable but that powerful propaganda didn't die, we must remember that. This is all happening again, it's come full circle. Hitler created a false flag terror attack to invade Poland, the U.S. did it to invade Afghanistan, Iraq and so on. A continuation with propaganda of the likes even Goebelle's could never imagine. The media is the true evil, hitler was a demigod because of it, lets not let it happen again.
@wheelmanstan I'm in Full Agreement-- well said! Prescott Bush, gr.father of W Bush, donated $ to the Nazis ...the terminology is the same: Homeland ... Nazism - the beast that wouldn't die. False flags...skull & bones, many of us thought he was the better man, Lord forgive us our failings Please!
I just finished watching this documentary on Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He seems to have been a most extraordinary human being, a most compassionate and humble man, and as a theologian, blessed with the perception and ability to articulate that perception of religion as having become something not in service to what are still today, calling themselves "christians". To embody beliefs and teach that the bible is not just an antiquity or book to be misused by so-called christians are his legacy.
Hitler was the most beloved person in history which the historical films substantiate. Hitler lifted the Germans from the depths of despair to the greatest system of government the world had seen since the Romans. With Hitler as the Platonic ideal of a philosopher-king the Germans finally achieved togetherness and prosperity. The Fuhrer sacrificed all that he had created in order to save two-thirds of Germany from the communist jews which ultimately saved 450 million from Bolshevization.
Why are you telling this revisionist nonsense? Hitler was and still is one of the most hated criminals in modern history. That guy used plain murder for his own political purposes and ruthlessly tried to sacrifice even his "own" people in the end!
Why are you telling this revisionist nonsense? Hitler was and still is one of the most hated criminals in modern history. That guy used plain murder for his own political purposes and ruthlessly tried to sacrifice even his "own" people in the end!
You've obviously been indoctrinated into neo-nazism and will refuse to believe any kind of evidence to the contrary. Hitler was an insane criminal. Yes, he was similar to the rulers of Rome. This is not a good thing. Look at Nero or Caligula. As the saying goes, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. After stealing the election, he wanted more... and more... and more. He destroyed any progress with Germany that had been accomplished.
Interesting that Bonhoeffer rejected Martin Luther's Doctrine of Two Kingdoms -- the separation of the world from heaven -- and instead believed that Christians were bound to act within the world, fighting for social justice and the acceptance of diving suffering. He watched the German Lutheran Chuck collapse before his eyes during the reign of Hitler.
"We painted Hitler as a monster, a devil. And that's why we could not move away from that portrayal after the war. We had mobilized the masses against the devil incarnate. And so we were forced to continue in this satanic scenario after the war. We could not possibly have explained to our people that the war had actually been only a preventative economic measure." -- James Baker in 1992, USA Secretary of State
Dietrich was not only gifted but more importantly obedient to God's call in his life. The prophetic nature of his exhortations and the piercing call to community and discipleship are rare in the church at large. Watching this documentary reminded me why that to love the Lord, I must love and serve his church.
@ColinoM - There was honesty and integrity in Bonhoeffer. Your comments show that you are gravely lacking of both! At least have the decency of knowing what you are talking about. God chose the jewish people (not the other way round!!) to obey his commandments: NO OTHER REASON!
Your comments are a perversion of the truth and you are obviously an ANTISEMITE...Just like the Fuhrer! Shame on you
"Should the leader succomb to the wishes of those he leads, that seek to turn him into an idol, then the image of the leader will become the image of the misleader.
This is the leader who makes an idol of himself and his office and thus mocks God".
I know that evil succeeds when good men do nothing. I cannot condone Bonhoeffer's involvement with assassins, but I admire his convictions. I praise God for the work accomplished through Bonhoeffer. I also know that Bonhoeffer can take no personal credit, because God insured his life, work, and death glorified only the Crucified.
God bless Bonhoeffer for his bravery. He did what all Christians should have done-resisted the idolatry and evils of the third reich. Let this be a lesson for all of us.
@33388665599 Amen to that!!!!! The problem is that ppl don't realise what evil they're tolerating until it blooms & bears fruit - to the ruination of all. Too often it's when it blooms that ppl react - when the damage has already been done & it's already the 11th hour.
This movie is wrongly labelled for it is mostly Hitler who speaks here and not his theological adversary Bonhoeffer! But still Christian theology is no use against totalitarian dictatorship only the old way, the Roman way, the very same way Brutus removed Julius Caesar from the world, is the only way how to cope with any tyrant and those who try to style themselves as such! But how could Germany succumb to such a rabble? I understand why Napoleon was able to size power but how this painter?
The Nazis had their own religion. The plan included the extermination of all faiths. Not with arguments, but with the violence. Relied heavily on Medical Science and gave the interpretation. They used the very concept of eugenics.
some call catholics christians they really are not most catholics are decieved by this church it does not even follow the commandments it worships idols and does not read much of the bible at all there is even a warning in the bible to come out of her my people in revolations so beware dont fall for anything except Jesus as savior pray and read your bibles.
The truth is that the Roman-Catholic church is much firmer in the camp of Christendom than some of those far-out so-called "evangelical churches". It does not worship idols, although I also believe that it teaches falsely regarding Mary and the saints, and justification.
However; what I said first still stands. And the only place that the RC church is "Babylon", is in the twisted minds of Jack Chick-wannabes....
Ya man I agree completely. I don't agree with Catholics and their teachings on Mary but, I know many solid Catholics who love the Lord and are Christ followers or Christians.
I honestly do not believe that this man would try to kill hitler at all I don't see that maybe I am wrong but if he was a pasifist then that would not be possible.
quinn127, local libraries are full of books on and by Bonhoeffer that explain the development of Bonhoeffer's thoughts on this and why he was involved in the plot to assassinate Hitler. Even better, buy this DVD, it's one film worth every penny of its price.
Yes unfortunately the Catholic Church, the Luthern Church and the Russian Orthodox Church were all involved with the rise of Hitler. With many believing that the Catholic Church was essentially controlling German and Italian fascism from the shadows.
The Pope is and was God's agent. Surely the Pope's recompense lies in the heavens. So, what if the Italians invaded the Vatican? Would the loss of the Vatican been a just loss if the Pope had spoken against Facism? Yes, I think so.
Hitler proclaimed that "Christ was the biggest joke the Jews ever played on the world". The hero worship of Hitler, Stalin, and Mao, supported, by the way, by the naive left-wing in Europe and America for a long time. And do you want to know who pulled back the curtain on those frauds? John Paul II, the Pope of Rome. Which emperor has no clothes?
Christians DO believe that an unborn child is of equal value as someone who is already alive. God created us ALL in the womb and we ALL fearfully and wonderfully made by God as His word declares. Shooting Abortion doctors is Murder, and will certainly not win anybody to Christ. The Abortion doctors, as well as ALL of us, will have to answer to a Holy God someday soon. God is in control and He Will judge ALL sin. We all owe a debt that only the blood of Christ can pay.
i agree with the unborn and born babies being of equal value
but about bonhoeffer.. he wrote a letter one day after his help in the failed attempt to assasinate Hitler which allows us to see how pain stricken he was over the pacifist approach by Christ and watchin Hitlers massacres
its also important that even after succumbing and joining the assasination plot Bonhoeffer admitted complete nonviolence was the right thing to do, but he thought the good it would bring was worth the sin
It was more, more that a man: it was a people in progress with a flying mind.
Another angel to light our life. Saints, prophets open our faith so this testimonial only. A key to built future, to built Europe, to free the World. Thanks Germany for this born!
Only spiritual blindness and/or paralysis(acc. to Oxford Companion to the Bible, hallmarks of demonic activity!) could cause such a comparison between the NT Jesus and a historical figure so utterly alienated from the Word of God.
EDIT: this statement is a response to Contraceptor 2000. Of course, I am speaking of AH here, not DB; please see my other comment below this one for clarification.
"Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God." (Cor. 10:32) Offence is that which causes any individual to become offended (vexed, confused) and thus alienated from the Word of God (Holy Spirit, Truth, Life, or even Good, Law, Higher Self, etc.)
so what just because he was hated by no means means that he is a follower of jesus. think of the people killed by hitler. how did hitler die for christ. plus to be a martyr u must die for that cause hitler killed himself.
God has always had His people..who fought against tyranny...The lies in Germany started by Hitler and his followers against those who were weak...set the fires of truth alive...with the Confessing Church...whose truth leader was Jesus Christ of Nazareth...
ya great job - without Hitler, Stalin would have taken ALL of Europe in 1941. Were would your hero Bonhoeffer and church be then? DEAD AS A NIAL...
