  • Great Cigar!!! compliments for the video

  • Super vid carly... one of the truly great modern-day gallopers. The thing that impressed me the most was his connection's desire to seek out the pretenders, wherever they were. With so many entire's nowadays retiring after single figure races it was great to have him around as long as we did. I can't believe it was 14 years ago. And a massive shame that he was infertile.

If you have a look at 0:09 on this video you see an almost imperceptible lead change. His balance was exquisite.

  • I'm 31 years old. I've been a fan of racing my entire life. Cigar had my heart! Every month I got to look forward to him running again...and winning! Curlin and Rachel have given me wonderful memories as a fan as well. These types of horses are the ones I live for. Great video!

  • Come on! You really think Curlin is in Cigar's league? 16 in a row and most were graded stakes. Curlin didn't come close to that! As for Rachel, maybe. Too early to tell. See how many she can win when she's a 6 yr old.

  • The racing world is due another Cigar, a thoroughbred that can devaste every competitor in the US and still go to Dubai after traveling that far and out of your comfort zone, and look them in the eye and draw away is truely, truely a great champion. I would have loved to see what his get could do but hey, I suppose he's the only one for a reason.

  • We had one in Curlin, and maybe another in Rachel Alexandra

  • Not even close. While Curlin had a fine 2008 season, Cigar won almost as many races in 1995 as Curlin did in his entire career. Rachel Alexandra has had one race vs. open company and defeated a very weak field by a neck in the Woodward.

  • Since Cigar, we've had several other fine horses such as Skip Away, Invasor, and Ghostzapper. But none of them were superstars in the mold of Cigar. While I'm hoping we'll see another one soon, I'd rather wait for a true legend than elevate less talented horses to elite status.

  • TIN CAN COMP.

  • CIGAR was incredible. 6,000 miles and winning- WOW

  • Last Spring we were fortunate enough he ate one of our mints and vistited with us a few seconds before spriniting off in his pasture. We worship, he is worthy.

  • been watching racing since 1970....ZERO DOUBT Cigar in the top 5 or 6 ever saw.

  • Best music put to video EVER!

  • Was at Arlington the day he tied Citation. Truly an amazing athlete.

  • my favorite horse of all times.

  • Excellent choice of music, it makes my hair stand up!

  • cigar was a fuckin beast

  • Anyone who disputes Cigar's accomplisments only need to take a look at his lifetime earnings of $9,999,815. Which has still not be achieved by any other horse in over 10 years even with todays big purses and big speed figures. Please, give credit where its due. He is a true champion that beat every horse that challenged him for over a year. Some people have to complain about everything. It was a great time and was wonderful to watch.

  • You do know that Curlin will beat it in his next start if he wins, right?

  • that is because the purses are biger now, curlan, im a big fan of but he has yet to accomplish what cigar did, in my opinon

  • @kcflyers Makybe Diva won nearly $15m before retiring in 2005. Sunline won over $11m before retiring in 2003. Just FYI.

  • Anyone who you put out there Cigar beat. Watch the Dubai World Cup, he looks the horse in the eye in the stretch and would never let them by if they went around 5 more times. THE HEART OF A CHAMPION!!!

    C

  • I will take a peak when i get a good break.

  • Ok tipzew, you dont have to take me seriosly because i have been around some outstanding horsemen,i.e the late doug peterson, and the late great charles whitingham."ANDREW BEYER"Cigar by contrast never recorded a speed figure higher than 121 and usually competed in the vicinity of 117. although with many positive characteristics he managed to go through his record winning streak without encountering a rival who stepped up and ran a challenging figure.

  • I know there are those that say he didnt beat much but 159 2/5 in the mud is somewhat impressive to me.

  • More impressive was Inside Information's race in the Distaff, the same day. 1:46 and change is more impressive (got a better speed figure by 2 points) The track that day was muddy, but also super fast. I don't think anybody's come within 2 seconds of Inside Information's stakes record set that day, while Cigar's has since been eclipsed by Cat Thief, Skip Away, and the spectacular Ghostzapper.

  • 95 had to have been the weakest handicap division in the history of horse racing history.

  • without Holy Bull, it was pathetic. Just think L'Carriere would have been BC Classic and probably Horse of the Year winner if not for Cigar. Maybe Thunder Gulch would have got the sympathy vote. But then again, I would never vote for a horse that never eclipsed a 107 beyer speed figure for Horse of the Year.

  • Haha, 1995 was a deep year.... lets take a look at who was racing... 3 year olds and up..... Silver Goblin, Best Pal, Betrando, Concern, Devil His Due, Thunder Gulch, Unaccounted For, Urgent Request, Star Standard, Kissin Kris, Wallenda, Del Mar Dennis, Tinners Way, Blumin Affair, Soul of the Matter, L'Carriere, Flying Chevron, French Deputy, Peaks and Valleys. Cigar beat all of them, and the one time Holy Bull faced Cigar, Holy Bull broke down trying to run with the Big Horse.

  • Cigar who did he run against again? what track records did he set again? cigar the name make me laugh, he won 16 in a row and beat nobody you cigar people get pumped up by tom durkin calls. cigar sucks

  • Hard to take you seriously, when I see that you subscribe to the "Booty Page Directory". Read Jerry Bailey's book, and see what the man you rode him has to say about him.

  • Thanks for posting this. I am a HUGE Cigar fan. I watched him through his racing career and went to visit him when he was at stud - I was lucky enough to spend time with him in his stall, something I will keep with me forever. Cigar ROCKS !

  • An amazing and powerful horse !

Thank you so much for posting this great video.

  • Carly once again ...many thanks...I would like to read more about Cigar, can you recommend a site please...

  • google search unofficial thoroughbred hall of fame I think they have a Cigar bio

  • OMG i went to see cigar hes soo cute plus i have the bryer horse of him

  • Cigar is a great horse. I went to kentucky horse park to see him, and he is AWESOME!

  • i have his cousin she is so sweet her name is skeddadle seattle but i just call her mama she just had a foal a year ago and is now about to have another next year some time but her foal that is a year old is named miss erin i exspect big things out of her

  • That move in the Mass Cap in my mind defines Cigar. Just takes off,and just goes off and hides with no urging at all! just incredible what Cigar was capable of.

  • Yup, thats why I put it first, the announcer loved it, and it was super impressive

  • What a great horse!

  • Cigar was a good horse, but the only race i can think of that cigar won is the Breeders cup classic, however he had a great managers.

  • he won 16 in a row, tied with Citation on that record. The world record is held by Kinscem, who won 54

  • i went 2 kentucky horse park and i got 2 take pictures with cigar hes soooo adorable and i saw john henry 2 poor old guy hes so old but hes still kickin!

  • if you want to see Cigar (the ACTUAL horse, not a movie or picture), go to the Kentucky Horse Park. i saw him there.

  • Me Too blackhorse1818!!! You are the first person I know that has actually been there! He was great to see in person wasn't he?

  • yeah i know! i couldnt believe it!

  • Thanks for the great video of my favorite horse! Brings back great memories

  • I met him twice. He is such an amazing horse, this is awesome and really well done <3

  • I should have posted his 16th win in a row win at Arlington in the Citation Challenge, you could have used that one too.

  • If you have Cigar's 16th win kicking around, I'm sure we'd all love to see it. If you can, please post it. Take care.

  • omg thank you soooo much.. i have to say cigar is my faverite racehorse of all time.. but barbaro is a VERY close second

  • I was there for that race. It was great
