Ridiculous comment. It's a completely different culture; art in japan carries an entirely different set of principles than in the West. it is motivated by different beliefs and aesthetics. Japanese admire simplicity, which is why their instruments and chord progressions are inherantly simple. It doesn't mean it is any less captivating than what Mozart wrote.

Japanese paintings weren't flat because the artists didn't understand perspective, they were drawn that way due to the principle of "the floating world' (Ukiyo); an idea meant to convey an unfixed dream-like state. The Europeans had their own ideals and strove for realism, but that doesn't make their art anymore valid. The Japanese were just as capable of drawing realistic portraits, it just wasn't on their agenda.

Europe is a collection of different cultures, Japan is one country.
