I think a lot of these bands go a bit overboard with the synth sounds. In the 80s it was done a lot more intelligently and there were basslines, chords and melodies working with and against each other. This isn't unpleasant but its a bit basic and absolutely drowning in very static sounding synths and a ton of compression and reverb. A bit like a 14 yr old finding a synth for the first time and not having the faintest clue about song construction so he loops the chorus all the way through.
